Self Defense Alternatives
I believe the time is coming where people in the US will give up their right to own weapons, and similar to the health care law, will initially think this is a good idea. This topic isn't to debate this, as there are members here who think guns are bad and it's pointless to debate people this stupid when you have mass killers like McVeigh, Lubitz, etc. Ultimately, people want safety and will give up everything to get it, even though safety will never exist and we will all die. The areas in the United States with the strictest gun control (or where guns are illegal) have the highest gun crime rates, and I predict when guns are banned, crime will get worse because criminals know nothing can stop them - thus this thread.

What are some self-defense alternatives (like a cross bow), which are effective at stopping invaders and self-protection? Before anyone suggests "living in the right part of town", that isn't the topic of this thread and that will also change anyway (political officials are already working on an affirmative action for suburbs, so criminals are coming whether you like it or not).

In the long run, the answer is get out of the United States and let these idiots get the system they think they want, but that also means finding a country favorable to owning weapons and limiting government (this will get rarer and rarer with globalists trying to take over everything because they want global tyranny).

Get a dog. Criminals hate dogs and don't usually target houses that have a dog especially a big dog. This house about a block away from me has a big German Shepherd and the owner leaves it outside in the yard on purpose to scare people that walk by to not think about his house as a target.

How fucked up is the world getting if you can even protect your own property from getting stolen. At least that doesn't happen in the US currently.

Other ideas for self defense. You can use just about anything.

Want some length: axe, baseball bat, sledge hammer, broom even.

Why would anyone need to think about this? It's the weapons that cause the crimes.

You're seeing socialism enforced - there is no private property anymore. "Trespassing" only exists in a capitalist society.

RE: Self Defense Alternatives
Guns aren't going to be banned in the U.S. in our lifetimes. The Supreme Court has held that the 2nd Amendment protects a personal right to bear arms. There are 300 million guns in the country, and enough vehement gun rights supporters that an effort to go house-to-house to seize those guns would lead to massive civil unrest if not civil war.

It's possible that background checks and licensing requirements will get more strict, that military-style weapons or high-capacity magazines will be banned, but the idea that a law-abiding person won't be able to buy a handgun or shotgun for home defense is a pipe dream.

RE: Self Defense Alternatives
I dont think this is really a valid concern as there's just too many guns for the government to ever think about consfiscating them without a violent revolt.

If you're really that concerned about this buy a couple guns in a state that doesn't do any reporting of who buys guns or buy them from a private party off armslist where there won't be a record of it.

That said, to go along with your scenario I'd say get a dog and stay fit and healthy.

Booby traps are illegal in the US. It already happened: Some dude set some up, burglar got hurt, homeowner went to jail.

The link title is misleading. This dog law applies to Wales in the UK.

Not "Europe".

RE: Self Defense Alternatives
^The article said the law was designed to protect mailmen who get their fingers bit through the mail slot in the front door. I don't know much about Wales but I doubt they would give you two years for your dog protecting the house from burglars. Then again, I wouldn't put it past any country at this point.

Quote:There is no offence under the act for a dangerous dog on private land where it is allowed to be, including the owner's front garden.

The Welsh government points out the current act does not protect, for example, a postman coming to the door.

She said changes were needed to protect postal workers, for example by installing cages on doors to stop dogs biting fingers through the letter box.

I get that they are trying to protect someone walking down the sidewalk from getting bit by an untrained dog through a fence. The problem with laws like these is that there is too much grey area and a burglar could in fact sue.

Yeah dogs are sooo girly. Especially Rottweilers and German Shepards. Have you ever actually seen a dog over twenty pounds? Not all dogs are Shih Tzu's and Yorkies. What a dumb comment. I bet you own a cat.

Keys. Everyone has them. Your house keys can easily serve as a weapon if you put them between the knuckles like Wolverine. Just imagine punching someone with it.

I know several people who keep a baseball bat handy. I like the baseball bat / kitchen knife / shotgun if you have it combo, but my theory is that weapons that work at a distance are better unless you're really good at grappling/fighting.

I'm going to go with another suggestion: build better walls. Some simple ideas:

1) If you have a sliding door, stick a piece of wood into the door slide (basically along the bottom of the door). Just go to HomeDepot and buy a 3/4"x3/4" dowel and cut it to length. Even if they jimmy the lock or you forget to lock it, the door has no place to slide.
2) Similar for the windows. My windows have a channel that I stick a custom-cut dowel into to prevent opening the windows more than about 4". If someone goes to open the window, it won't open enough for someone to get into. Even if you don't have the channel, you can install a dowel to hold the windows in a position. You might need 2, one for partially open, one for all the way closed.
3) Get a steel security door on all your exterior doors. The ones on my house are much, much stronger than the actual front door. You can leave them open with the "day lock" on and it'd basically take an acetylene torch to cut through it, even in summer when you have the screens in.
4) If the neighborhood is real bad, you can always get bars on the windows.

I take this position because if someone gets into your house, it's already too late. You're probably getting woken up in the middle of the night against a fully alert assailant. Make it difficult to gain entry and you've at least slowed down the attacker enough that they will:
1) Give up and search for a softer target.
2) Make a ton of noise trying to get in so you have time to wake up and get your shit together.

In my experience, most crimes are crimes of opportunity. You can't stop a really determined attacker: yeah, if someone lays into a window and smashes it, they're going to get in. If you're up against some guy spun out on meth who won't feel pain and can't think rationally, you'll need to do some damage to shut him down. But 90+% of what goes on is just simple shit that you can prevent.

Think about your average burglar's motivations: they want easy money. Unless you have a shoebox full of cash in your bedroom, why would they go after you and not the house with an unlocked gate to the back yard and a shitty hollow Home Depot door?

If you're renting you may not be able to do all these (especially the security door) but the dowels in the windows trick will cost you less than $50 and will make life tougher for the potential burglar.

RE: Self Defense Alternatives
I won't answer this question in regards to the US because the eecond amendment is law and we will ultimately win and keep this right.

However I thought extensively about this in regards to traveling around South America and other places. Either the airport, local law, customs or whatever would make a gun or knife inpractical to carry. The only alternative I came up with was a hard bright flashlight like the onea made by Surefure. I have been to every country in South America and only Bolivia in exit customs tried to take it (to steal it). I argued with a smile in Spanish and the guy gave up. I actually had two of them and he di not see the other one anyway.

It is a useful self defense weapon for temporary blindness or to use as a blunt object to hit an attacker. Surefire sells some with a bezelled edge.

A pen for stabbing at soft targets. Using a knife for self defense in most of Europe - even a knife that's legal to carry in the country in question - is probably quite likely to land you in jail. Same with other obvious weapons like nightsticks, or even the so-called "tactical pens".

I'm thinking of getting some pepper ball guns.

The cool thing about them is that you can also use them for paintball.

Something like this if I feel like splurging:
[Image: tippmann-bravo-one-elite%20e%20grip.jpg]

It can hold 200 shots. I'm not going to pretend that you can stop a determined killer with something like this, but pumping 200 pepper ball shots into the common house thief would probably be enough to make him run away or at least buy enough time for me to run away.

Those are the kinds of guns that Dog the bounty hunter uses when pursuing criminals. If those things have pepper balls and you hit someone in the chest, that will be the equivalent of getting pepper sprayed when that dust expands upon impact. A few rounds and that will drop an intruder like a sack of potatoes.

Personally, I'll stick with my shotgun because ammo is cheap. I only need to pump that thing once for the intruder to hear. Once he hears me pump a round into the chamber, he will most likely high tail it out of my home.

^^ Isn't there some concern of getting some of the pepper on you?

Back in my paintball days it always seemed like there'd be broken balls all the time.

For a more concealable option look into the Kimber Pepperblaster. It shoots a blast of 10%OC gel (not spray) at 110mph. I carry one while jogging/cycling.

Not on here much anymore. I'm either out on 2 wheels or trying to kill something.
