Bought a Glock 19 the past week as my first handgun, just waiting on the 10 day waiting period to go pick it up... +1 to OP for the great tips, I've been trying to incorporate them on my range trips.

Coming back to this thread - looking at a XD .45, however, it looks like you can get your own 1911 80% lower and machine it yourself out here !

I'd be stoked to be able to do that, and you can do it for about $650, that includes lower, jig, slide, and parts kit.

If you're going to do a 1911 prepare for a lot of hand fitting. It's a lot more work than just finishing the frame and putting it together, and you're going to end up with a whole pile of tools to really do it right. Little files and stones and a trigger bow anvil and so on.

I had a whole toolbox of 1911 shit at one point but it got stolen by tweakers along with about 20 Chip McCormick 8 round mags and the top half of one of my 1911s I had apart for repair. I switched to Glocks a few years later after I got sick of fixing my 1911s every couple months. Buuuut anyway... building a 1911 is still a pretty cool project.

No one can call themselves proficient, or safe really, if they cant verbally regurgitate those rules IMHO.

The closer you are to your intended target, the less perfection you need from each. Study up. Way more to know than I can write here.

Get actual hands on training. Ask your friendly neighborhood shooting range instructor; that cousins who's a police officer (Tactical, not Barney F'in Fife), or a COMBAT ARMS M.O.S military (think Ranger and above, SEal or MARSOC, AFSOC PJ, etc) to go and show you some pointers. Try not to just plink and throw lead next time your out. Have purpose. Generally those type of dudes are more than happy to teach as they know the more knowledgeable our general populace is, the safer we all are. That whole knowledge is power thing.

Yeah that's what I was being told, a buddy of mine just finished building his, if anything - I can always go to a buddies shop and machine it there instead.

It's nice having friends with shops.

I just like building shit - I have 3 lowers now (2 80%), one 16" barrel, a pistol 10.5" barrel, and I'm going to buy a 20-22" barrel in the future. That's all I want.

The handgun 80% lower will be a fun build, I'll probably get a Glock as well. I've been so focused on only AR's (because of the "Evil Features" law coming January).
