I'm A Sydney-sider, Get Me Out Of Here!
By now, it has become clear to many forum members not from or familiar with the current Australian social climate just what we’re dealing with down here.

Yes, It is toxic. You have seen it with your own eyes over the past week as we as a group have been hung out to dry by the media, governments, NGO's & the frenzied mob.

This excellent essay adds more weight to the current situation. This is what it is like to go out on the town in Sydney, our capital city.

Would The Last Person In Sydney Please Turn The Lights Out

Quote:IN 1999, Sydney was at its peak. The Olympic Games were imminent and there was unbridled optimism that Sydney was about to emerge as an international city as the millennium approached.

Internationally, Sydney was renowned as an incredibly fun place to live; the entertainment was world class, with great restaurants and venues to visit at any time of night.

Something pernicious has happened in the 17 years since, and Sydney has not just regressed into a ghost town, but there is an undercurrent of something much more sinister in the way the city is being run.

As I write this in 2016, not a day goes by without the press reporting of yet another bar, club, hotel, restaurant or venue closing.

Walk up Bayswater Rd, Oxford St or the ‘Golden Mile’ in Kings Cross and club after club is closed; not just after 1.30am, but permanently.

A few months ago the perennial Flinders bar in Darlinghurst closed. Then the century-old Exchange Hotel shut down, which held six venues including the Phoenix, live music hall Spectrum, and the upstairs pool hall Q-Bar. Following that, the evergreen Goldfish bar in Kings Cross. Then Soho.

Every week, another venue or restaurant closes. The soul of the city has been destroyed.

Kings Cross, in particular, has been decimated so badly that it will never, ever, come back as an entertainment precinct. Hugo’s Lounge closing, which was the swankiest bar in Sydney for 15 years and voted Australia’s best nightclub five years running, was the final nail in the coffin for the area.

The sad empty building where Hugo’s Lounge once thrived.

Quote:The venue also housed the 130-seat Hugo’s Pizza, which had not just won Best Pizza Restaurant in Australia at the Australian Restaurant & Catering Awards, but was also named the World’s Best Pizza in the American Pizza Challenge in New York.

Manager Dave Evans cited revenue falling by 60 per cent due to 36 different “stringent conditions” that had been placed on the business over the past two-and-a-half years. The closing of the venue made 70 staff lose their jobs.

Hungry? Good luck finding a restaurant or vibrant area open late now. Down the road, Jimmy Liks, an up-market and seductively lit Southeast Asian eatery, wine bar and cocktail bar is likewise bust. A sign hangs out the front “Thank you Sydney for an amazing 14 year journey. NSW Lockout Laws cost good people their jobs and decimated a once great and vibrant suburb!”.

After 14 years it’s all over for Sydney institution Jimmy Liks.

Quote:Even Australia’s staple fast food franchise and destination of choice for hungry late night revellers — McDonald’s on George and Bridge streets in the centre of the city — has, rarely for the global franchise, shut down.

On Saturday nights tumbleweeds blow across the main entertainment precincts for Sydney — Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and Oxford St.

The Late Night Management Areas Research Phase 4 Report, commissioned by the City of Sydney, details the damage done to night-time in economy.

From 2012 to 2015, it was recently reported that Kings Cross foot traffic was down 84 per cent as 42 bars, clubs and small businesses closed as takings fell by 40 per cent or more.

Foot traffic in Oxford St is likewise down 82 per cent. This is already on top of a drop of up to 60 per cent which occurred from 2010 from 2012 as the increasing regulation kicked in.

The total and utter destruction of Sydney’s night-life is almost complete.

A succession of incompetent governments has systematically dismantled the entire night time economy through a constant barrage of rules, regulation and social tinkering.

And oh, how ridiculous these rules have become in Sydney. A special little person has decided that there is a certain time at night when we are all allowed to go out, and there is a certain time that we are allowed into an establishment and a certain time that we are all supposed to be tucked into bed.

There is a certain time we are allowed to buy some drinks, and over the course of the night the amount of drinks we are allowed to buy will change.

The drinks we buy must be in a special cup made of a special material, and that special material will change over the course of the night at certain times.

The cup has to be a certain size. It cannot be too big, because someone might die. Over the course of the night, this special little person will tell you what you can and cannot put into your cup because someone might die.

Bolded for truth fellas. This has been going on since December 2008 when they brought in the first 'lockout laws' as a knee-jerk reaction to the collective outpouring of grief over a couple of incidences of "alcohol related violence".

The laws businesses say are ruining them.

Quote:It is now illegal to buy a bottle of wine after 10pm in NSW because not a single one of us is to be trusted with any level of personal responsibility.

Apparently there is an epidemic of people being bashed to death over dinner with a bottle of Marlborough sauvignon blanc that we have all been blissfully unaware of.

Likewise it is now illegal to have a scotch on the rocks after midnight in the City of Sydney because someone might die.

You can drink it if you put some Coca-Cola in it, but you can’t drink it if the Coca-Cola has been mixed previously with it and it’s been put in a can.

Because that is an “alcopop” whatever the hell that means.

The only person more confused than me is the bartender. The poor sod is only trying to scrape a few nickels to make it through university; not only are they struggling with their hours being drastically cut back with venues shutting, but the government is now threatening them personally with fines if they break any of the rules.

$5500 to the bartender, $55000 to the venue. Bankrupting either.

Oxford St used to be buzzing no matter the time of day. Now it’s a series of boarded up shops covered in ‘For Lease’ signs.

Quote:Frankly you should be both thankful and lucky the government lets you out after dark at all.

There’s a whole Orwellian nomenclature that has been made up to deliberately keep the general public in a constant state of confusion that some terror has swept across the city: “king hit”, “coward punch”, “alcopop”, “alcohol-related violence”.

Being quite a respectable lot, we’ve all been guilt shamed into thinking that something in the Australian psyche is ugly and that mixed with alcohol we turn into raging brutes, or that by simply having fun somehow we’ve been breaking some great moral code, the 11th commandment: thou shalt not have fun.

But that’s all a load of rubbish and in actual fact, you’ve done nothing wrong at all. In fact you’ve been very well behaved. Sydney ranks more safe than Bordeaux, France or Lausanne, Switzerland for crime.

If the government was truly interested in your safety and not purely on a moralistic crusade, there are plenty of other things that are more dangerous to your health. Did you know that on average an Australian dies every three days in Thailand? You are far more likely to die falling over, out of bed or off a ladder than in anywhere near a licensed venue in Sydney.

It’s also worth noting that two of the biggest beneficiaries of the lockout, the Star City and Barangaroo Casinos, have 24x7 licences and were conveniently left out of the lockout area.

The Sydney lockout area conveniently excludes Star City and Barangaroo.

Quote:Sydney used to be a laid back place where we’d welcome the world to come throw a shrimp on the barbie. Now if you do that and someone takes offence to the smoke, the NSW Government will fine you $1100 for the first offence, $2200 for the second and probably put you on a registered barbecue offenders list.

In Sydney, you can’t even have a beer in the sun enjoying a game of lawn bowls anymore without the NSW Government wanting to shut it down. You can’t go for a workout in the park without the government imposing a curfew because 30 or 40 people complain in a city of more than 4.8 million.

Yes, you are living your very own version of Footloose, the iconoclastic 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon, where a city teenager moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned by a Bible-thumping Minister. Who would have ever thought this could have happened in cosmopolitan Sydney?

Sydney, once the best city in the world, has become an international joke thanks to the NSW Liberal Government.

No wonder everyone’s apparently moving to Melbourne.

Mike Baird has turned Sydney into Detroit.

The historic Flinders Hotel is now boarded up.

This is how Sydney used to look...

I want to reiterate just how toxic this place has become. The moral of the story for RvFers here is simple...

DON'T BANG SYDNEY.

Fucking nanny state. The casinos must've donated big time to get those curfews put in place.

The nanny state is why I'm thinking of leaving Australia.

So many burdensome regulations to wrap everything in cotton wool because of the lowest common denominator.

I remember visiting Hong Kong where I could drink booze from the 7-11 in the narrow cobblestone street between bars along with a hundred others, or walk onto the Ferry at 3 in the afternoon with an open King Brown (750ml bottle of beer) in my hand only to be warmly waved on board by the security guard.

Might be time to plan another trip.

RE: I'm A Sydney-sider, Get Me Out Of Here!
Sounds like I was reading about Toronto. Many of those nanny rules have been in place here for much longer, I can tell you how Sydney will end up..but it's a sad ending (spoiler: It will end up like Toronto).

Toronto via nanny rules and politics destroyed it's nightlife area close to ten years ago. At it's peak Toronto had more bars per capita than Vegas, 2nd only to Miami. The area we called Clubland would draw 100k people to party evrey weekend. It was electric with music pumping all over the streets and people everywhere. Car culture with people cruising in nice rides just hanging out, people having dinner on a patio, street buskers, it was a organic electric energy you can't plan or make laws to grow.

All of that was destroyed via politics, especially by the Councilman Vaughn who lead the charge to shut down bars, impose a cap, and then force feed shoebox condos into the area. Now the area is a ghost town with overpriced condos everywhere and nothing happening on the streets.

It's a real shame about the nanny state laws, the women, and how Sydney businesses are dying left and right; Sydney really is a great city otherwise in many respects and has enormous potential. Where is the Australian Donald Trump?

Old England's puritanism rears its head yet again. Restrict alcohol like a drug, and people will abuse it like one.
Then the abuse begets more restriction. The cycle of prudishness and vulgarity continues.

I much prefer the Mediterranean attitude. Have a little wine a day, and rarely get drunk; alcohol is for relaxing, not losing your mind.

The thing that just shits me the most is that I wasn't told. It never even occurred to me that I could just drive to an airport, get on a plane, and all the fucking bullshit vaporizes in an instant. The fat wrinkly fucks vaporize. The controlling assholes and their oppressive states vaporize. The gouging vaporizes. The politics bullshit vaporizes. The brainless deadshits vaporize. Then the huge lung full of fresh-air feeling comes.

I only needed to be told. If I'd been told, I'd have gone straight out to the mines in the boom and worked like a maniac. Piling cash after cash. Putting away enough to last 10 years in the classic 3, then fucking off. Instead, almost a decade of life wasted -- staying in the major cities in hope I might get eventually get a decent girl, thinking it would lead to a better career, none of which ever came. I'd probably be married with 3 kids in a safe, normal family by now, or set up in a nice easy harem, if I'd just been told when I was 18. Instead, now I'm slogging away to resurrect a life, heading towards 30, so I can hopefully reach something close to the fucking happiness I could've had if I'd been told back when I was 18, instead of discovering on the wrong side of mid-20s.

But it is OK, it will have meaning in the end. Perhaps these things happen for a reason. That I may end up in a place that I could never have if this hadn't happened. That I may go on to help other young men, flush with the knowledge of how to save those who want it.

So back to work I go!

RE: I'm A Sydney-sider, Get Me Out Of Here!
Anglosphere members outside the US have 2 good options.

1.Pursue career options in the US.
2.Leave the anglo world for greener pastures.

1. You will deal with similar problems to where you come from but not such a big nanny state, more freedoms and way more opportunities. There is much diversity in ideas in the US, not everyone is cultural marxist, just look at the political process and right wing media outlets. Towns like NYC-Vegas-LA -Miami and smaller towns like Tampa-Scottsdale-SanDiego-Austin don't exist in the non-US Anglosphere. You have way more options to move around and create a good life for yourself while also mingling with the natives due to lack of language barrier. Becoming an American is a lot easier for you.

2. Many people in this forum have done this and I won't go over the benefits. The only down side is that you will always be an outsider and a foreigner.

RE: I'm A Sydney-sider, Get Me Out Of Here!
Isn't Melbourne on the way to becoming a 24 hour night time city? I remember going out there all night until 5am every weekend no problem and read recently they are making it even more relaxed than it was several years ago. If so, why is Sydney persisting with the lockout that makes no sense and definitely damages the economy.

In the UK one of my first impressions was amazement at how people were allowed to stand outside a pub on the street and drink a pint. That they were allowed and trusted to do it responsibly. That you could buy alcohol in a convenience store (in Australia this is illegal unless it's a licensed bottle shop which you won't find open 24/7). That guys didn't have to wear a long sleeve shirt to get into clubs or bring 3 girls with them. Australia is bad even by comparison with Anglo countries let alone laid back Asia and Europe.

Been living in Norway and Poland for the last 5 years. But originally from Sydney.

Went back for the first times since I left for xmas and new years.

Sydney nightlife is dog-shit.

Prices have doubled, getting in places was a lot harder and the quality of women.... Don't make me laugh.

Luckily I am not keen on going out and drinking 4 nights a week like I used to be. But If I was, I would just move to Berlin.

The less fucks you give, the more fucks you get.

By wasting a decade you saved yourself a lifetime. Most men never realise any of this. I'm 28 myself and now realise I will get to enjoy all of my thirties without ever having to worry about the blue pill death sentence.

Over the next decade while you're living the good life, thousands of other men will be cut to ribbons because they never had the ability to truly disengage from the bullshit reality they live in.

Wtf

It's even more retarded than you might think.

Melbourne actually trialled the 'lockout laws' prior to Sydney adopting them. From memory it was a 6 month trial & deemed ineffective at its conclusion.

Next thing, Newcastle's (city 2hrs North of Sydney - full of bogans) mayor announces they are going to be trialling lockouts there. They have similar results to Melbourne but conclude it is WORKING.

Sydney adopts lockout laws from Dec 1 2008, & has steadily increased restrictions & fucked with business owners & livelihoods ever since. Good luck coming here to study & thinking you'll get bar work, esp if you don't have a pair of tits (or can actually lift a fucking keg, y'know)

I remember being in Melbourne when they tried to shut The Tote due to bullshit regulations on live music venues. Tens of thousands marched on State Parliament and Town Hall saying "these regulations are bullshit, change the law".

Live music is now protected. If your city is lame change it. Can you guys in Sydney just make some noise and reverse lockout if it sucks so bad ?

There is a growing movement, however I'm so sure of their ineffectiveness against the powers that be that I can't even remember what they call themselves.

I have never seen an industry so completely fucked with & brought to its knees like what has happened to hospitality in this city.

Not even the goddamn pokies have been able to save it (actually that was the start of the end).

New to Sydney and curious about this too.

It's an extremely high standard of living city, women have their own money and just need entertainment. So it looks like it could just the Pareto principle applied twice: Top 4% of guys sleeping with 64% of girls, then the next top 16% of guys sleeping with the next 16% of girls, and the remaining 80% of guys with the bottom 20% of girls.

The guys here are either not clued in, or they're acutely aware and trying to claw their way into that top tier.

I visited Sydney a few years ago with my father and explained these numerous regulations to him. Keep in mind he grew up in a communist country in his youth, and had to deal with dating, fashion and music (culture) police (not a joke, they were real). His response to the Sydney regulations? "More fucking rules than the communists."

Yeah even supermarkets in Melbourne probably open later than many Sydney so-called night venues.

Still, I'm quite amazed at how Sydney consistently manages to out-wowser Melbourne. Never thought that's remotely possible. And they have the nerve to charge a shitload more for everything.

Plus the weather here in Sydney for the past year has been so random & all over the shop.
That the one main detriment people would say about Melbourne - dud weather, no longer applies.
The weather in both places is just as random.
Unless you have to live next to a beach or you're set in Sydney; these days Melbourne is just as viable.
Plus the St.Kilda harbour district is quite a slick part of town, even if it doesn't have a true beach.
