My misogynist views have caught up with me and I’m being chased out of my city by a mob of blue-haired feminists. I need a Russian speaking country to escape to for a few weeks. I’ll be working from my laptop while looking for an intensive Russian language course to enroll on. At least that’s the plan.

I need somewhere cheap. I plan to be away for 2-4 weeks. Any longer and my means of income will be compromised. I’m leaning towards Odessa, Ukraine but I’m also considering Belarus or Estonia.

I plan on visiting Russia for the first time this summer so I’d like to rule it out for the time being.

My Russian language skills are atrocious at the moment. My motivation to continue learning is diminishing. This could be the little adventure I need. Would learning Russian in a country other than Russia be detrimental to my learning at this stage?

From what I've read on the Tallinn thread, Estonia would be a nice start. English levels are decent and you can get by without Russian.

Yes, most russians in Estonia live either in Tallinn or near the eastern border. The russian they speak is the same as in actual Russia, so there's no difference there. Ukrainians have their own language, which is similar to russian, but not identical.

If you want it cheap in Estonia, go near the eastern border of Estonia to cities like Narva or Jõhvi, where people don't even speak good english. You will be forced to adapt and learn. Of course, you could probably get the same in certain parts of Tallinn with the added benefit of better nightlife and daytime activies, although higher costs of living.

Anywhere on this planet, as long as English speaking crowd is decent, you won't get to live cheaply. Try some other places where English is minimal. And minimal f'king tourist crowd too.
