Exclamation The Panama Papers Thread
This is just getting some traction and will more than likely explode in the next 24 hours.

Basically 100+ news agencies in 100 countries all over the world are releasing the Panama Papers tonight at the exact same time.

What are the Panama Papers?
http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/en/
https://panamapapers.icij.org/?utm_conte...ign=buffer
https://panamapapers.icij.org/graphs/

Essentially a whole lot of corruption from political leaders/rich/tax evaders.

This isn't just some file - this is 2.6 TERABYTES of Data.

To quote Edward Snowden
Quote:Biggest leak in the history of data journalism just went live, and it's about corruption.

The video they released tries their hardest to explain the situation

Here's a list of those who are involved... yeah...it's pretty bad

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
This gonna be interesting, although the last time with the Swiss bank leak, what eventually came from it? Did people end up in jail? Massive fines? It seemed very big news, but what the final impact was didn't really make the papers that much or perhaps in the end they just covered it up mostly.

Normally I'd think "nothing will be done", but this has some BIG names on the list of who will be held accountable. Already Iceland's Prime Minister is being asked to resign.

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
You hit it just a few minutes before me.

http://www.welt.de/politik/ausland/artic...offen.html

Quote:Hundreds politicians, sports stars and criminals are said to have hidden with the help of a law firm in Panama funds. In data, the journalists were leaked, there are also the names of presidents.

A law firm in Central America Panama should have helped President, drug smugglers and sports stars over the decades the process of forming anonymous shell companies and funds to hide. This is apparent from approximately 11.5 million files zuspielte an anonymous source of the newspaper, reported the "Sueddeutsche Zeitung".

The leaked documents should contain e-mails, documents, bank statements, passport copies and other documents about 214,000 companies were registered especially in Panama and the British Virgin Islands. They documented the offshore operations of a total of 140 politicians from around the world.

In the documents the names of billionaires, politicians, athletes, arms dealers, spies and fraudsters appear, reports the "SZ". Among other things, would confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko can set up shell companies.

Close contacts of Putin initiated reportedly in recent years under conspiratorial circumstances apparently more than two billion dollars through shell companies and managed this much money out of Russia.

Also, the Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson said to have had by the end of 2009, with its present wife a letterbox company in which, among other bonds important Icelandic banks were deposited.

In the "Panama Papers" themselves are also tracks for Fifa affair found. So should the Uruguayan lawyer Juan Pedro Damiani, a member of the adjudicatory chamber of Fifa Ethics Committee, three defendants have helped in Fifa scandal to offshore companies which possibly football administrators to have been bribed.

The ethics committee of Fifa already confirmed internal preliminary investigations against their own Member Damiani. "Yes, the report is correct. I can confirm that we have passed a so-called preliminary investigation into the way", said the spokesman of the investigating chamber of the Ethics Committee, Roman Geiser Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

"The biggest data breach in history"

The information about the offshore business were the "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" leaked by an anonymous source. The paper is 2.6 terabytes of data, which are 11.5 million documents to total 214,000 shell companies. At the evaluation of documents about 400 journalists from nearly 80 countries participating. In Germany, NDR and WDR were involved in the research. The revealer of the NSA scandal, Edward Snowden, said on Twitter the "biggest leak in the history of the data journalism".

The shell companies were set up by the law firm Mossack Fonseca from Panama. This explained upon request, the law firm working for 40 years without any complaint. "We never have been charged or indicted for a criminal offense."

Internationally sanctioned business as a cousin of Syrian President Bashar Assad or monarch as the King of Saudi Arabia, according to the documents used offshore companies. New allegations there by the data leak, according to "Süddeutsche Zeitung" also against the Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi.

Everything that is digital, can be hacked or someone just put a hint on the information. Maybe they spy on us, but its not that they are out of touch. At one point, the truth comes always into light.

We will stand tall in the sunshine
With the truth upon our side
And if we have to go alone
We'll go alone with pride

For us, these conflicts can be resolved by appeal to the deeply ingrained higher principle embodied in the law, that individuals have the right (within defined limits) to choose how to live. But this Western notion of individualism and tolerance is by no means a conception in all cultures. - Theodore Dalrymple

V interesting. Nothing about the Panama Papers on US based media outlets so far. International press coverage is huge though. Apparently over 400 journalists from 80 countries investigated these leaked papers for the last year. Gives me some hope that investigative journalism is not completely dead.

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
People have short memories, this will blow over before the majority of people can begin to understand.

The saddest thing is that this will make it much harder to take advantage of the wonderful tax evasion legislation Panama has passed over recent years. Panama literally looked at the offshore world, cherry picked all the best features of the enabling legislation, and enacted all of it in their own jurisdiction - essentially setting themselves up as the perfect place to base your trust or foundation. For anyone with aspirations of getting unconscionably rich, this is a disappointing moment. Setting themselves up as such was a giant 'fuck you' to the Western world, one that will not have gone unnoticed - I am sure there are plenty of legislators and tax authorities just dying to make Panama's life difficult.

Putin is literally untouchable. Go to Russia and ask any Russian on the street - they will all tell you that corruption like this is simply business as usual for Russia - no big deal. They will all have assumed that this was happening, and it won't change the fact that the average worker's life has improved immeasurably under Putin. His approval ratings may not be quite as high as the ballot box would suggest, but Putin is genuinely enormously popular in Russia, I doubt your average Russian will begrudge him getting (very) rich for his efforts. All the ultra rich have also done very well under Putin. There is a tacit understanding that they are able to do more or less what they like, so long as they don't come at the throne (hence Khordokovsky being sent to Siberia).

I've not read the papers yet. I'll probably browse them at some point. But the chances of anything serious happening as a result of the leak is next to zero. There is a reason conviction rates for white collar crime are so low - it is nearly impossible even with skilled lawyers and forensic accountants explaining something in great detail to make your average person understand something that is quite simply beyond them. Trust law at this level is incredibly complicated, and something most lawyers, even most good lawyers, fail miserably to get to grips with. I'll bet a squillion bucks that none of the journalists that write about this will have anything more than an emotional understanding of offshore trust law and the actual functioning of trust vehicles in the various jurisdictions.

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
One of the reasons for the rise of populists like Trump, Sanders, Le Pen, Corbyn and others who cater to the interests of their citizens rather than the globalists (regardless of where on the political spectrum they lie) is due to the growing distrust people have towards established narratives concocted by the elites and promoted by their propaganda arm aka mainstream news media. You can see this not only in elections but on a micro level even in the commenters section of mainstream agenda-setting publications like the NYTimes where the commenters crucify and call out the obvious pro-migrant, pro-globalist, pro-military industrial complex bias of the newspaper.

The revelation of the Panama Papers can be ignored by the populace or will be further proof that there is indeed a globalist 0.1% who enact laws and rules that they themselves do not play by. It can go 50 - 50. Already in Iceland there are calls for the PM, who is on the list and who campaigned on an anti-corruption platform, to step down. Let's see how this plays out. I have hope in people. Folks are starting to see through the bullshit

Under America laws if an US citizen has an offshore account and doesn't mention it to the IRS, he(or she) is fucked right? It would be a serious crime wouldn't it?

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
This time I think there will be strong implications. Putin ok, but many of the guys on the list are not untouchable like he is, especially in the small countries heads will role. Also just for the sake of clarity it will be interesting to see how the whole network operated. I see many African countries involved as well, you can be against taxation etc. but in those countries many many lives where at stake and the people involved opted for escape of their legal responsibility. Oil companies, princes, arm dealers, many heads of state, etc.

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
No heads will roll in Africa or the Middle East. Everyone knows the governments there get personally rich of conducting government business. When BAE is bribing Saudis openly, how much of a secret do you think it is in Africa that they guys running the government, who are mostly dynasties anyway, ensure that they get a cut of any deal that gets done? I think you would have to be extremely naive not to realise that in most of these largely backwards countries there are a few guys at the top milking it for all it's worth.

When I was last in Russia, a major new road had just been built in Moscow, and something like £100 million out of the £300 mil it had cost had gone 'missing. As a consequence the road was a few metres narrower along its entire length. Nobody thought this was surprising, or particularly noteworthy. If this is the case in Russia, how surprised do you really think people will be in Africa to find that their leaders make aid money, or foreign investment money disappear? And what's going to happen in the Middle East, where most of the states are run by monarchs (or their equivalent)? How outraged are people really going to be that their ruler is rich as a result of being the ruler of the country? I suspect the only surprise to most people in these countries will be that this is news in the first place.

Iceland may be anomalous, but I doubt it is a sign of things to come. I've no idea about th epolitics there, but I wouldn't be surprised if any uprooting hadn't already been in the works for sometime.

RE: The Panama Papers Thread
Depends on each case. You think the fact that Assad, Mubarak, the president of Ukraine etc. are involved won't have implications? I'm not saying they will go to jail or will even pay anything, but politically speaking it can reveal intentions and they will pay a price in elections. In Russia, corruption is indeed so common that people don't even care anymore. Same for many African countries, but not all. Rwanda's president Kagame is famously anti corruption for instance. In Kenya corruption leaks ended in violence on the streets.

European countries and the socialist states in Latin America cannot cover up the leaked findings as easy. If you are Maduro or Correa, every day speaking about socialist measures of redistribution, you think people will not get infuriated over massive tax evasion by people linked to their parties or even personally to these people?

Anyway I think it will be interesting to follow. It can tell a lot about a country to see how they deal with such things. And a lot on the population as well if they even care...

Yep. This is a main reason why so many Americans are renouncing their citizenship; the bullshit required to comply with IRS reporting requirements over this has people saying "Fuck you very much. I'm out.".

Have the actual papers been released to the public? Can we download them or are the Media hoarding them?

A comment I read elsewhere:
Quote:The Panama Paper Leak is a dirty obvious PR stunt of the West to expose BRICS leaders in order to topple them with bad publicity

Agree? Disagree?
