I can't help but feel like my mind is wandering every time I show up to work. It's not that I'm inattentive while I'm there, I always get solid reviews from my boss and I get along well enough with my coworkers, but I feel like I'm going insane when I realize that I have to spend 8-9 hours of my own time, and my own thoughts, to making someone else's machine operate. I think it's just that - the realization that I'm not aloud to think of myself, friends, or anything I'm interested in when I'm there. My mind is always, or is always trying to wander elsewhere.
I'm 24, so I've only been out of college for a bit, but is this normal? For those who have been in the workforce for awhile, is there any point where you were able to get tunnel vision and truly focus without feeling like you're missing out on something?

I'm incredibly inattentive, but I have inattentive-type A.D.D. and on top of that, loathe my job.
Everyone gets distracted to a degree, the difference is I *seek* distractions to get away from shitty work.

In my last job, an office, I found it almost impossible not to zone out over the backdrop of hideous unnatural light, the unending drone of computers and women complaining about things.

My mind wanders considerably when I'm in work. Luckily though, I drive a bus for a living so it's not as though I need to pay that much attention...

Take on more at work.
Pop noopept.
Work out in the mornings before work.
Plan stuff outside of work so you dont feel understimulated in your downtime.
Bring a pocket size notebook and write in it; first what you were dwelling on instead of working, business improvement ideas,
and have an Excel document with a rolling a to-do list in one column, then a list of what you actually got done against that.

I use to do the same when i was young, not so much these days. I found the only way to stop it without drugs is to meditate for 30 mins a day. It's bloody hard at first but just like the gym, over time you will get great results!

Writing with your left hand will help too! We write with our right hand (conscious) and with our left (sub conscious). Other way around if you primarily write with your left. I find it's one of the best ways to give your sub conscious a voice so it will shut the fuck up!

Listen to binaural beats for relaxed focus, that helps me. Also, work in time blocks using the Pomodoro Method. 50 minutes of intense laser focus, phone in Do Not Disturb mode and binaurals on with headphones, no distractions, then a 10 minute break. Start with 20 on 10 off time blocks then work up to 50/10.

Yes, in a previous job, my mind wandered all the time. The job was boring and routine, and lacked an opportunity to use my talents. I was fired, and was mad for just an hour or two. Then I smiled, laughed it off and realized how happy I was to be free from a boring job. If you have an active mind, I suggest you start saving up money and consider starting your own side hustle or business. If you have a sharp mind that isn't being engaged at work, then it is time for you to start making ready an exit strategy. Find your own path, either in another industry, or venture out on your own and start your own business. I don't regret doing it for a minute.

Yeah, my mind wanders constantly at work. It's always been that way, to the point that I got fired from numerous jobs for spending too much time on the Internet. I would come up with ideas for an email or a post or a Wikipedia article and immediately go online and start writing. I would get warning after warning to quit doing that, till finally the ax fell.

Now I'm more subtle; I just jot down ideas in my little Eccolo notebook for later transcription. I probably pause from my work every 30 seconds to do this. The people who work closely with me probably realize by now that all this constant scribbling isn't work-related, but the casual observer just sees a guy taking notes while work-related stuff is on the computer monitors.
