The Pokemon GO thread
Not sure if this should be in the "Game" section since this is technically a game...

So Pokemon Go Beta has finally launched and I got a hold of it (only launched in the States and Australia as of now, I think).
This is the typical Freemium app, with free content and then you have to pay for extra perks.

But basically the concept of the game is that you walk around in real life with the app, and depending on the city and geography and time of day you will encounter different kinds of Pokemon. So for instance, as we walked around DC in the afternoon we encountered mostly Rattatas and Pidgeys/Pidgeottos -- When we got back to college park and walked in the grass, there were mostly eggs and grass type Pokemon such as Bellsprout. Closer to a small rivulet that runs through campus my friend found a Poliwag (water Pokemon). In the evening, we caught mostly Gastlys(ghost/poison), Nidorans/Nidorinos.

Here is a link for the BETA gameplay for Oz (but its the same for the states as well) that describes customizing your character, catching pokemon, getting pokeballs, levelling up, fighting gyms etc.

Is this the new Selfie? There are going to be accidents with people stopping on highways trying to catch Pikachus and whatnot. But it seems fun.
Also drains battery life pretty quick. But hey, its REAL LIFE POKEMON!

Servers for Iphones have been down all day, but the ones for Android (atleast in this area) are okay for now. This should stablize over time though.

Here's their official website.

Also, here are the Pokemon I caught in a few hours (trade in multiple copies to get stuff to level up and evolve your main ones) -

Edit - CP stands for COMBAT POWER or how powerful your Pokemon is.

We already have a gym in College Park that has Pokemon at a CP of about 300, so in a couple of days I should become a Gym Member too. Will report on that as and when it happens.
Best time to get in is now, so you can pummel the sheeple getting in later on.

Can't this just go in the video game thread?

RE: The POKEMON GO thread
We have a thread for Hearthstone and Clash of Clans, this is about specifically the Pokemon Go thread that atleast I plan on keeping updated so I think it may be okay.
Leave it up to the mods though.

Oh shit there's a Hearthstone thread?!?! I just got into that as my "I'm sitting in the airport for 4 hours again" game.

Pokemon GO is important not just because it's fucking awesome, but I think it's a major experiment in "augmented reality". If it succeeds (and slapping Pokemon on something is probably enough to do it) then hopefully we see more interesting things in the future featuring this tech.

And for those who can't find this app because of country non-availability, it's easy enough to Google up the .apk for Android users.

RE: The POKEMON GO thread
I've already posted about this in the forum lounge, but as a strong proponent of exploring cities and strange areas this is the most fun I've had in a long time.

Especially with the group chats and teams with me and my close friends trying to take over every gym in our city. It's really been a blast so far.

Let's hope they build on it.

I'm also starting to think that someone at Nintendo reads RVF. Training Pokemon at the actual gym and churches being Pokespots. This reeks of some serious Tinfoilhat subversion. Which is an awesome and cool coincidence if it isn't.

Looks like we posted at similar times. Yeah their strategy is really to put out Pokegyms and stores in public landmarks and places where people be able to congregate. We've already set up a crew here. Also, after about 50000000000000 miles of walking I hope my Magikarp evolves into a Gyrados.

Also, given the likelihood that you can only use the trade in the same Pokemon shards for leveling up Pokemon, it might be easier to just make your common Pokemon super strong as opposed to a Level 1 legendary - hopefully they change that in the future and we get to see the rarer Pokemon actually useful in battle.

RE: The POKEMON GO thread
You can buff out Ratticates so easily because they're so damn easy to farm. Also better get yourself a Pidgeot fast. Those things will be early game powerhouses.

Looking forward to also getting an Alakazam in the future to deal with the odd Bulbasaur starter pick or two. Scored myself a Growlithe as well. Only person I know to have found one. Strangely enough I was smoking a cigarette in the middle of a bunch of tall grass when I did.

On the Yellows, I guess that's a universal thing....yep....those Yellows don't have anything. Fairly Jeb Bush level in my area too except around the hyper liberal University of St. Thomas.

My future Arcanine more than makes up for it. Also too bad everyone I know picked Charmander irrespective of team. I'm going for the long haul here man. I'll get all three starters eventually anyways.

Yeah its there on the Iphone as well. Server issues seem to have been resolved.

Also just battled a Yellow gym leader. 120 CP Ekans got wrecked by 290 CP Pidgeotto.
Yellow teams have already become the Sigmas of Pokemon GO.
Mentavious when you get to level 5, do yourself a favor and just pick team Red

RE: The POKEMON GO thread
Maybe this is just self selection being in a college town but EVERYBODY is playing this.
Drove 3 miles and just kept hitting the Poke-stops one after the other.... ping ping swipe swipe all 10 minutes.

Okay serious strategies -

1. Get into a gym EARLY. The more your pokemon fights and defeats other newbs, the stronger it becomes. Get in a gym EARLY and snowball before the competition becomes tough. We're already seeing CPs of over 1000 in a DAY.

2. Use your incenses wisely. You get 2 at the beginning, use 1 to quickly level up and get pokemon, then save the next till after you get to level 7/8 -- you get MUCH stronger pokemon then -- and greater variety. So unless you're one of those fags who just wants to complete the Pokedex and not murder newbs, save the other incense -- you also get some more at Pokestops but they're rare.

3. Eggs - use the egg incubator and try and use the eggs that need more effort to hatch -- for eg choose the egg that needs 10 km to walk instead of 2 or 5. You get much better pokemon.

4. Don't start buffing up your pokemon immediately.. Again your goal in the early game is just to level up quick so you have access to better pokemon which become MONSTERS. Remember, you're not playing for fun. This is a serious business and I imagine people will even sell their accounts for hard cash as momentum builds up.

5. Look at pokemon starting CPs and their attacks as well. For example 3 pidgeys may have very different CPs and attacks (most have the common ones, but I got one that had a dragon attack). Also, dont just buff the evolved version. Look at the CP. I've caught rattatas that were MUCH stronger than raticates (one even had hyper fang, not sure how). You can ALWAYS evolve them later on. Look at skills and CPs before evolving.

Pidgey to Pidgeotto or

Pidgeotto to Pidgeot?

If its the former, dont do it. If its the latter (i.e Level 3 evolution, do it).

You'll find a lot of Pidgeottos when u hit level 3 upwards, so not worth it

Real question: are women really using Pokemon Go? I've always seen Pokemon as a guy-thing. Not saying women wouldn't start Pokemon go (they are herd animals after all), but genuinely curious what people think is going to happen moving forward. All the talk I've seen about Pokemon Go has been from guys.

Here in Melbourne, it is almost all Asian fob and local Asian women using it, and a small percentage to of too.

The only white women using it are the geeky nerd types and very rarely. It is mostly guys, but because Pokemon Go is so popular down here anyways, that women who do not play it do not seem to judge you negatively for using it as an excuse for being outside.
