After refusing to practice Thursday, Gophers players donned their maroon game jerseys and announced they are boycotting all football activities — even their Dec. 27 bowl game, if need be — in protest of the University of Minnesota’s decision to suspend 10 teammates in the latest fallout from a September sexual assault investigation.

Those 10 suspended players stood directly behind seniors Drew Wolitarsky, Mitch Leidner and Duke Anyanwu — with the rest of the players standing behind them in clear support — as Wolitarsky read from a typed, two-page statement, laying out the players’ demands.

“The boycott will remain in effect until due process is followed and the suspensions for all 10 players involved are lifted,” Wolitarsky said.

Wolitarsky said the players want an apology from university President Eric Kaler and athletic director Mark Coyle, adding that the players “demand that these leaders are held accountable for their actions.”

When asked if the players were worried about losing scholarships because of their boycott, Wolitarsky responded: “We’re all in this together. What are they going to do, pull 120 guys off the team? They won’t have a team if that’s the case.”

Kaler and Coyle issued a joint statement that granted none of the players’ demands but added, “We want to continue an open dialogue with our players and will work to do that over the coming days.”

Gophers coach Tracy Claeys tweeted, “Have never been more proud of our kids. I respect their rights & support their effort to make a better world!”

On Tuesday, the school suspended 10 players indefinitely from all team activities, with those players facing new sanctions from the university’s office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA).

According to the players’ attorney, the EOAA recommended expulsion for Ray Buford, Carlton Djam, KiAnte Hardin, Dior Johnson and Tamarion Johnson; one-year suspensions from the university for Seth Green, Kobe McCrary, Mark Williams and Antoine Winfield Jr., and probation for Antonio Shenault.

The school discipline comes weeks after a criminal investigation resulted in no arrests or charges.

Some of the players were directly accused by a female student in an alleged sexual assault in the early morning hours after the Gophers’ first game on Sept. 2; the involvement of others is unclear. The woman’s allegations have been documented through police reports and court testimony, and ultimately led to the EOAA investigation.

Wolitarsky said the team wants the players reinstated because they were punished “for things they didn’t do.”

Attorney Lee Hutton, who is representing all 10 players, said he is working on their appeals.

Wolitarsky said he and other players were incensed after a brief meeting with Coyle following Wednesday’s practice.

“We got no answers to our questions about why these kids were suspended when they were just found [innocent] by the law,” Wolitarsky said. “He basically told us that he didn’t have answers, and that led us to believe that this is kind of unjust. He has the power to reverse this, and he won’t.”

Instead of going through their scheduled Thursday afternoon practice, the players called a meeting and invited just one staff member — linebackers coach Mike Sherels, sources told the Star Tribune.

“All these kids’ reputations are destroyed,” Leidner said. “Their names are destroyed, and it’s extremely difficult to get back, and it’s very unfair for them and that’s why we’re sticking together through this thing.”

With that unified voice, the players then invited Claeys to join their meeting. Sources told the Star Tribune that the head coach expressed reservations about the boycott at first but relented by the end of that meeting.

Claeys declined further comment through a team spokesman. The Gophers were scheduled to hold five practices over the next seven days before flying to San Diego on Dec. 23, four days before the Holiday Bowl game against Washington State.

“This decision for the players to take this stance is not easy but important to preserve the integrity of our program and ourselves,” Wolitarsky said. “We note that the Holiday Bowl Committee, Washington State and the fans are affected by that decision. To that end, we respectfully request that the Holiday Bowl Committee be patient during this time, while Mark Coyle considers his decision to suspend. We also want to request that Mark Coyle make his decision with due haste.”

Kaler said in a letter to university boosters dated Wednesday that Claeys made the decision to suspend the players, with support from Coyle. Later in the evening, Coyle clarified that he made the decision in consultation with Claeys.

But two sources said Thursday that the decision was made above Claeys.

“Mark Coyle did it,” Wolitarsky said. When told of Coyle’s statement that Claeys made the decision, Wolitarsky said, “I don’t believe that.”

Kaler and Coyle’s statement said:

“We understand that a lot of confusion and frustration exists as a result of this week’s suspension(s). ... The reality is that not everyone can have all of the facts, and unfortunately the University cannot share more information due to federal laws regarding student privacy. We fully support our Gopher football players and all of our student-athletes. Situations like this are always difficult and the decision was made in consultation with and has the full support of President Eric Kaler. The decision was based on facts and is reflective of the University’s values.

“We want to continue an open dialogue with our players and will work to do that over the coming days. It’s important that we continue to work together as we move through this difficult time.”

This is a bold, and brave move. Some things are more important than football. This could be the first united pushback against the kangaroo courts, or the players may fold, time will tell. I think this story has the potential to keep this issue in the public eye at a crucial juncture of US politics.

This is hard core. I feel like I want to go into battle instead of just liking a bunch of posts. The Mizzou football team went on strike a year or so ago for a fake issue, and Mizzou lost status badly, not to mention the hit those football players took to their reputation.

I'd like to see this go in a much different direction. I'd like to see U of M take a hit that lasts 15-20 years on their reputation as a football school, but I'd like to see these players come out as the ballsiest winners in a generation.

Ha! I spent some time at UM in a year-long exchange program many moons ago.

It was my first time away from home, and off the east coast, and my first time living in a city where I was actually a minority. At the time, my culture shock was pretty severe. People were so nice! Even in the bad parts of Minneapolis, drug dealers on the corner will still say hi to strangers. In retrospect, I have a lot of fond memories of Minneapolis/St. Paul, even if I was too young to really enjoy it at the time.

More importantly, I don't know if Americans on the coast can understand how big of a deal this is. In the Midwest, football is life. During my year at UM, I spent spring break visiting friends in Omaha. On a random Saturday, I walked into an Omaha grocery store to pick up a couple of things, and the store's loudspeaker was playing the radio broadcast of the local college football game. College football was so ingrained into people's lives that no one considered this rude or unprofessional on the store's part. Blew my mind.

Those kids are under tremendous pressure to play. It takes balls of steel to do what they're doing now.

While I think this is great, everyone don't get too hyped up that U of M is a good team. They are at the bottom of the barrel of the big 10. That being said, this would be a great spark to light a fire and see something similar happen to an actual big 10 team like michigan, nebraska or wisconsin.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. Liberals dig deeper than gophers. The ones at the top are on the verges of provoking a war with Russia even though they lost and still have no idea as to why.

What is important is that this is the first major battle in the war against SJWs and Feminists on colleges with football programs.

Jameis Winston and others were fighting by themselves.

Baylor's coach Art Briles lost his battle recently but, he is now suing the university with one of the best lawyers in the country. So there is that.

I could go on, but those were one sided fights along the lines of a skirmish.

This is much bigger and is a full on fight. Power 5 conference team refusing to play, is setting the tone for the war now. The next big school's players will feel alot more inclined to follow suit now.

Like those videos Roosh was sharing earlier in the week of hooligans fighting, sometimes all it takes is for a select few with balls to charge in and start swinging, for the rest to follow. The young men who galvanized the others on that team will make for strong leaders after college.

In the old days, flag/banner carriers were perhaps the most important job on the battlefield. They were guaranteed to be cut down, but the conviction of their charge was to motivate the rest of the army, and set the tone. We need more tone setters today.

The same way change will happen is if more men decide to check out of the system, much like the early Manosphere did. Trump's hatred of Political Correctness certainly helps and no doubt had to influence them. They may not get thousands of fan mail encouraging them, but they need to stand firm. Later it will be them encouraging others at another school to not give up. 2 or 3 of these may be required to break the back of the system.

It's not often I get a chance to be happy about something happening at my alma mater.

I hope they use this opportunity to fight against the SJW establishment that runs the school. They are a shit football team but could do some good here!

Can you imagine if this happened to a SEC school like Alabama or Auburn? The fury and lashout on the alumni's side could be intense. That said, the likelihood of this situation happening to Alabama is very unlikely. The higher ups there would never let 10 kids get suspended without Saban's approval first, or they would not even try it in the first place.

I agree with you though. We need a few more schools or two like the ones you listed or even a big PAC 10 school to strike, to force the NCAA or Title 9 to get some reasonable change to happen. Looks like sports may bail us out where regular students could not.

The Holiday Bowl is a fairly significant bowl. It is going to be played at Qualcomm Stadium, which is an NFL stadium. Its sponsors are some major companies like Thrifty Car Rental, SeaWorld, and several large insurance companies. Besides Minnesota, Washington State has probably already made its travel plans and reservations, as well as its fans, boosters, and alumni. Many of those reservations are likely non-refundable. The game is supposed to be broadcast on ESPN's main channel.

So, if the players can stay strong against everything the university throws at them, they should prevail on this one. It will be huge victory if they do.

Yeah, this and similar are very important battlegrounds in the war against masculinity. Feminists hate, hate, hate football. It's a masculine sport with mostly masculine fans and women can't play it. It's a high profile example of the realities of difference between men and women ... oh they hate it so much. Plus most SJWs grew up hating "jocks" and related culture in high school.

University level football has a lot of support from influential people with traditional values. People actually care about it enough to put up a fight. At the same time, it is centered around universities ... which the SJWs infiltrated and subverted long ago ... so it's a context where they wield a lot of influence and think they should be in control. Their frustration with the fact that football still exists is palpable. They will take and run with ... or manufacture ... any opportunity to damage football ... concussion issues, Penn State Sandusky, etc.

I'm so proud of these guys standing up for what's right and to be absolved of punishment for something they didn't do. But if they're looking for due process...well, a college campus is not a place they're likely to find it. Better hope this gets a ton of publicity or the SJW marxist infested administration will just double down. Their names, as always, were leaked and publicized and basically slandered by association with these labels, without any context or information about what happened. The accusers are protected, as always, and can invent and accuse whatever they like. I would not be surprised if the school does not back down. They have an unlimited supply of money from the student-loan scam and these liberals have no problem sacrificing both these young black men and a sport as masculine as football for one, fake rape-accusation. They care far more about her right to fake accuse then they ever will these men's lives.

It is incredible we have to face this line in the sand. When a school is so arrogant that they dismiss the findings of trained police because of ``feels'' and they are allowed to get away with it. Sure, the cops said you are innocent, but a woman is never wrong, so you are guilty.

The entire U.S. university system needs gutted.
