Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future

Quote:Advancements in technology have surpassed our wildest dreams over the past several decades. What many people once considered to be science fiction is now reality, and similarly, what we think is impossible today will become possible tomorrow. We have devices that can talk to us and tell us virtually anything we need to know, cars that can drive themselves, and robots taking over jobs that once belonged to humans. For the most part, humans haven’t had any trouble coexisting with all of this technology; we have become one with it. But what happens if technology continues to advance, and human beings one day become the inferior race? What if we transition from living in harmony with the machines to competing with them?

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, said recently that humans must become cyborgs and establish a direct connection with machines if they want to avoid becoming obsolete. Musk’s warning was made at the World Government Summit in the UAE earlier this month. According to CNBC, Musk explained that overtime, he believes “we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence.”

The Tesla Founder’s argument is centered on the idea that while humans have limited processing power, technology, machines and robots have virtually unlimited potential. Computers can examine, process and transfer massive amounts of information at a time, something that human beings are not biologically capable to doing. As an example, Musk brought up the topic of autonomous vehicles, which are currently replacing human drivers by the thousands. “There are many people whose jobs are to drive,” Musk said. “In fact, I think it may be the single biggest employer of people… we need to figure out new roles for what those people do, but it will be very disruptive and very quick.”

While artificial intelligence is becoming more and more advanced, it still is nowhere near the limit. Obviously, human beings can still do a lot more than their robotic counterparts, which at this point in time are limited to one or two tasks – flipping burgers, picking up heavy objects, using a marker to spell out words, etc. But still, AI is continuing to branch out into artificial general intelligence (AGI), which allows machines to do virtually anything that human beings can do. Going by Musk’s argument, that is the point at which humans would have to adapt in order to survive.

As previously mentioned, technology is more often a friend than a foe. Humans have found incredible ways to combine mechanical capabilities with biological functions. The military, for instance, has been working on a highly advanced suit capable of stopping bullets in their track.

The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, would be used by Navy Seals or Special Forces to carry out special operations. It is made of a new technology called “liquid armor,” which transforms into solid protective gear within milliseconds when struck by an electric current or a magnetic field. This allows our soldiers to move around in the suits with ease, without the burden of being slowed down by heavy armor plates or weighted vests.

In addition to its bullet-deflecting capabilities, the TALOS suit will also be linked to the wearer’s skin, allowing it to transmit vital signs in great detail. It will also be able to give the wearer increased strength, making it so that they can jump higher, run faster and pick up heavy objects, all of which are extremely advantageous functions out on the battlefield.

We have a long way to go before technology starts to make human beings obsolete. For now, we should just enjoy living in harmony with the machines, and keep striving to make a better tomorrow.

This statement by Elon Musk has beta cuck written all over it. Sigh.

It's not that humans will have to fight for survival against tech. It's that the mass of humanity must fight against the tiny elite that profits by displacing them with tech.

RE: Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future
I wonder if this is a clever ploy by Musk to distract people from the fact that his companies (Tesla and SolarCity) aren't doing so well. The PowerWall isn't that impressive - nothing new from a technology point of view, the roof shingles have been tried and failed by Dow, and SolarCity is close to 3 billion in debt.

I'm a big fan of renewable energy technologies, but I get the impression the hype and government subsidy gravy trains Musk has been riding are about to be over. I don't know how much longer his companies can survive.

RE: Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future
This is clickbait. He said that humans would have to integrate with technology as it inevitably progresses, not that we have to become cyborgs to survive. He's also not talking about cyborgs as in some kind of half-robot sci-fi character.

Quote:Musk also discussed how he saw human beings as already being “cyborgs” as we become more and more dependent on technology.

To muted laughter from the crowd, he explained: “To some degree, we are already a cyborg — you think of all the digital tools that you have — your phone, your computer.”

“The applications that you have. The fact that you can ask a question and instantly get an answer from Google and other things.”

“You already have a digital tertiary layer. Think of the limbic system – the animal brain and the cortex as the thinking part of the brain, and your digital self as a third layer.”

“If you die your digital ghost is still around. All of their emails, and social media, that still lives if they die.”

“Over time we will see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence. It is all about the bandwidth of the brain.”

“The digital extension of yourself. Output if anything is getting worse. We do most of our output through our thumbs which is very slow.”

“Some high bandwidth interface to the brain will be something which helps achieve a symbiosis between human and machine intelligence, which solves a control and usefulness problem.”

Humans have been integrating with technology in Musks' sense of being dependent on tech arguably since our caveman ancestors figured out how to make clothes to protect themselves from the elements or figured out how to use tree branches or rocks to club animals to death for food.

Actual cyborging as in technological augmentation of our biological bodies? We've been doing that since eye glasses. And now there's hip and organ replacements, pacemakers, insulin and other life sustaining drugs... shit you could make a case for aspirin or steroids being a technological augmentation.

Is some sort of 80's William Gibson-like cyberpunk digital augmentation of the human nervous system is coming up for everyone in the next 100 years? I'm skeptical. It would take an ordered, peaceful, intelligent society to develop and maintain such a thing. And as we've been noticing over the last few years that's not the direction we're going in. It's no good having an external hard drive implanted in your head giving you huge advantages over unaugmented humans in learning and memory if it starts to malfunction and cause you neurological problems and you can't get it fixed because in the year 2040 American society has collapsed due to the corrupt financial system failing for the last time and identity politics finally boiling over into civil war and your trusted neurosurgeon is dead or running for his life.

If only all this technology was not controlled by the elites, who use it put more and more people in dire peril. Where's the technology to end human suffering?
Every time they say humanity is progressing, due to THEIR latest fancy technology, the less free, prosperous, happy and healthy we become.

RE: Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future
Welp, humans are the sex organs of the machine world.
But i think for our physical and mental, though probably not financial, well-being, we need to disconnect from machines and develop
real human potential. Being able to use Google Maps doesn't mean you know where you are, looking up an answer or a reference on wikipedia
doesn't mean you're well-informed or knowledgeable; it's your mind convincing yourself that it's better because it's easier this way.

I was reading about the AIs that beat grand masters at chess or Go; couldn't humans learn from that loss, like they would to another human?
Maybe it's just the shock of such leaders being beaten in their field that means people resign themselves to not trying to outclass machines that can learn, but there must exist -at least in possibility- a thinker who can outshine AIs at games or strategy or logic.
They can already outclass the rest ot their human competition, so there must be the option. We want to look up to human achievements, not robotic ones.
And the human brain can make conceptual leaps that a computer can't. AI can master chess because chess is a game with rules, defined outcomes and finite (though enormous) variation. Could an AI compose a sonata or envision a political solution or invent a brand new technology? That's where human minds can stand out, and where they'll continue to.

The problem is the tendency to anthropomorphize the Go-playing machine and see it replacing human players as some kind of threat. The reality is that the best Go-player in the world isn't a human or even a computer, it's a team of humans that can design a machine that plays Go.

If someone challenged me to a game of chess, since I suck at chess I'd whip out my laptop and load the chess AI I wrote as a class project last year. Sure, this is "cheating", but from another perspective it isn't any different from using a calculator to do math, or a hammer to pound nails instead of punching them into a board with my bare fists. Machine learning and heuristic search algorithms are just tools.

RE: Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future
Globalist shithead who pushes global warming, cashes billions in state subsidies (most of his businesses would not survive without big daddy government and he would be at best a millionaire) and wants everyone carbon taxed to the hilt, because that will save mother earth (despite zero global warming in the last 18 years and all despite us pumping more CO2 out as possible).

The globalists have this idea of transhumanism. They can copy their brain to a hard-drive for all I care - and then bite the bullet. The hard-drive will still not be them.

WE humans and every living being is more than the brain. Mankind will one day prove it. But meanwhile the globalist sheisters are backing the transuhmanist dead end - it will be just as dumb as Malthus' overpopulation theories or the idea that inbreeding among 3 families for generations will produce superhuman offspring (it didn't).

The globalists are not infallible - some of their theories and attempts end up in abject failures - this is one of them. Smells like Musk in here.

Interesting synchronicity!
In the Gavin McIness thread,on an interview with Rogan, McIness mentions Ray Kurzwell who is the figure head of one of these transhumanist movements.
Like you, I wonder how a group of people who are supposedly so supremely refined, educated and provided with resources could not do a simple logical exercise that would prove how stupid the idea of cloning or copying one's data (brain, genetical, sperm, whatever) does not imply a continuation of the "self"
(and I'll stop myself here because this is the kind of thing that goes in the deep forum, and even then, sounds like mental fapping)

We move between light and shadow, mutually influencing and being influenced through shades of gray...

RE: Elon Musk: humans must become cyborgs to survive in dystopian future
Yeah - that goes into the deep category.

I've had incredible experiences of the spiritual kind which made it absolutely clear to me that we are more than the brain, but I am not in a position to prove it to you.

As for the future technology - computer operating systems which you can talk with - at least about 80% of topics - yes we will get that, but that is not an AI. There won't be any software awareness either - only something that seems to be like that because it has millions of questions and answers programmed into it. That I know too.

Other things that won't happen: transhumanism - transfer of consciousness into machine, though it is possible that we may control machines via neural input, but that is not transfer.

I don't even think that humanoid robots will be possible in the future - not because of technological reasons, but different ones. Please don't ask me why I know this one, because then you will truly think I am crazy.

Also his statements that we HAVE TO BECOME CYBORGS TO SURVIVE IS already globalist crap and I have to vomit. Again Green Fascism propaganda - here it comes.

True enough. People, and not just Go masters, are getting edgy because they can be made irrelevant by an AI or an expert system.
It's less a threat than a challenge. If you only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent, then the opportunity to get really fucking smart is here.
And that's key to developing a new peak in human mental capacity.

It's less a threat than a challenge. If you only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent, then the opportunity to get really fucking smart is here.
And that's key to developing a new peak in human mental capacity.

The other issue is that it shows that some games aren't really the fundamental tests of human strategic capability that people once thought they were. The assumption back in the 1950s was that chess was a true test of human intelligence, and if an AI could play chess, then it must be a strong AI (human-equivalent sapience).

Of course once they actually wrote chess programs, they turned out to just be mindless automatons that crawl through the state space of the game and make moves based on the expected advantage from whatever turn depth they can reach in their allotted time. After that, they turned to Go, assuming the larger state space meant that bashing it with a heuristic search wouldn't work and an AI that can play Go would then be "intelligent". Except now they have a deep reinforcement neural net that can win at Go, and it's still a mindless automaton. Just a better-designed mindless automaton.

If you want a game that I would consider a true test of human capability, try Twilight Imperium 3. There's plenty of tactics and strategy, but the intense amount of kibbutzing required to win is what makes it a real challenge. If you can build a computer program that successfully manipulates human opponents into fighting each other and ignoring its own military build-up, that might begin to be in range of turing test capability.

Ahhhh, good old Elon Musk! Part of me loves this guy for making powerful/beautiful electrical cars, hence forcing other car manufacturers to do the same.

But I'm getting tired of all his nonsense about colonizing Mars, AI takeover, and now cyborgs. Use your time and the billion$ of taxpayer money to fix your goddamn Tesla and make it more reliable! Then you can fantasize about cyborgs as much as you want...

I'm tired of tech-nerds with narcissistic cyber-heaven fantasies of living forever as a computer-brain.

Sorry, you're probably going to have to die someday like everyone else did. It'll be okay though - you won't have to respond to emails or text message beepings promptly or any of that irritating stuff.

I think it will be very peaceful.

Also another hint - All car manufacturers except Tesla don't sell you their electric cars - you can only lease them, but they can pull them back any time they want.

Even GM in the documentary had offers from clients to please sell them, but I guess they were made too well and GM rather destroyed them all before giving good electric cars to the average consumer.

When you watch the documentary you will find plenty of reasons why they won't give us good electric cars.

And if you want to find out more about suppressed technologies - have a gander at this:

It's a bit New Agey, but the inventors this Procter&Gamble heir visited are real - most also got later threatend by government agents - some even moved away and refused further interviews.

That is what the secret service and FBI really do - make sure that nothing threatens the status quo. You are free to invent anything that does not impede their agenda - .... or else....

Sorry, you're probably going to have to die someday like everyone else did. It'll be okay though - you won't have to respond to emails or text message beepings promptly or any of that irritating stuff.

I think it will be very peaceful.

Elison (Oracle's CEO) is personally spending millions on such research to prevent his death.

With all of the tech funny money in the world Larry will still die. I find that fact to be soothing in the face of these tools.

It is completely incomprehensible to me that those people can't seem to understand that while "uploading" your brain is all fine and dandy, whatever is floating around in cyberspace then isn't you.
It's a copy, it's not the original. It is an entity that is an exact copy of you at the point in time X, and a second after its creation it's already different, and as time passes it only becomes more different, since the experiences and environment which shape it are not identical with yours from this point on.
That's like believing that cloning yourself guarantees eternal life.
It-is-not-you. You die.

How about making sure the future is not dystopian, so we do not have to become cyborgs to survive?

Deus vult!

I own a Chevy Volt and it's incredible. Maybe not the greatest car I've ever driven, but certainly the greatest Chevy I've ever driven. It does't even cost that much more than a "regular" mid-size car. It's 0-60 time isn't near as good as the Tesla, but its 0-30 time is actually faster than a Model S85, cuz it's lighter. Around 2.2 seconds.

The Bolt all-electric crossover is already in-pre production and will be on sale this year. ~200 mile range and DC fast-charging.

If these aren't "good" electric vehicles then what were you expecting exactly? As far as the US is concerned I can walk right down to the dealer and pick from at least a half-dozen models of electric vehicle which aren't Teslas and cost half as much and drive home with one today. And there are over 500 public charging stations within 50 miles of me, most of which are free, that I can use to "fill up" wherever I am. Around here at least the future is pretty awesome.

The Model S and Model X were "cost no object" supercar project and aren't good representations of what consumer electric cars are about.

This is complete nonsense. The irony is that mid-size sedan sales from US manufacturers domestically is in a slump, the Volt is Chevy's only offering in that class that as of the beginning of 2017 was meeting monthly sales expectations!

GM can give us an electric car people want to drive just fine, but they can't seem to make an Impala that anyone wants to.
