Fertility is pretty low 40+ but as previous posters have said, she is still fertile, and the chances of birth defects (retards) are significantly higher.

Age of the mother is a risk factor for down's syndrome. My ex and I had genetic counseling before and during our pregnancy because she was in her mid-thirties and we knew that risk had increased with her age.
