Quote:MADISON, Wis. — Black students should be offered free tuition and housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison because blacks were legally barred from education during slavery and university remains out of reach for black students today, the student government said Wednesday.

The Associated Students of Madison said in a resolution that students from suburban high schools are overrepresented. The group said consideration of ACT and SAT scores in applications restricts opportunities for the poor and thus upholds “white supremacy.”

Race relations have been a contentious issue at the Wisconsin’s flagship campus for months. The university has proposed some measures aimed at improving diversity.

“The university’s rhetoric suggests that it is committed to diversity and inclusion, so this legislation compels the university to move towards action — which is imperative,” the resolution’s author, ASM Student Council Rep. Tyriek Mack, said in a statement. “If no one challenges the university’s empty promises, then the racial composition will remain stagnant.”

The resolution demands free access to the university for all black people, including former inmates. That means free tuition, free housing and no fees, Mack said. That would save a black resident undergraduate student about $20,000 a year.

The resolution goes on to call for the university to use 10 percent of donations to bolster financial aid and study the feasibility of test-optional and geographically weighted admissions.

The language mirrors demands that the Black Liberation Collective, a national network of black youth focused on higher education, has made to nearly 90 campuses across the country.

Black students currently make up about 2 percent of Madison enrollment. University spokeswoman Meredith McGlone noted the proportion of “students of color” has grown from 11 percent to 15 percent over the last decade. She said the school supports the spirit of the resolution but that it’s unclear whether the methods it proposes are legal or the best way to accomplish those goals.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank has proposed giving first-generation transfers from two-year schools free tuition for a year, contingent on funding in the upcoming state budget, and a recent $10 million donation will be invested in expanding the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program, which supports minorities, McGlone said.

ACT and SAT scores are not the only factor in admissions to the university in Madison, but their inclusion is required under regent policy, McGlone said.

Last spring, pictures of swastikas and Adolf Hitler were posted on a Jewish student’s door, someone hurled racial slurs and spat at a black student in a dorm, and police arrested a black student during class for spray-painting anti-racist messages on campus buildings. Minority students spent the semester pressuring administrators for change.

Last month, a student who was imprisoned for burning down two black churches tried to start a white supremacist group on campus. He abandoned his efforts following intense backlash, but the student government criticized Blank for saying he had a legal right to express his views.

The university in August proposed building a black cultural center, introducing discussions about social differences and expanding ethnic studies courses and diversity training for all faculty and staff.

In-state undergraduate tuition has been frozen for four years and Gov. Scott Walker has proposed a 5 percent tuition cut for resident undergraduates in the second year of the upcoming state budget. Representatives of the Legislature’s budget-writing committee haven’t responded to an email Thursday seeking comment.

Asked for comment on the resolution, Mike Mikalsen, an aide to state Sen. Steve Nass — a Republican and one of the university’s most outspoken critics — responded by calling ASM a waste of student fees.

Madison Bevan, a sophomore from Los Angeles who identifies herself as black-white biracial, called free access for black students a good way to bolster their numbers on campus. She said one student in her dorm told her she was the first black person they’ve ever seen.

“There’s such a small number of (black) people on campus, it’s very easy to feel like you’re alone,” she said.

Chinese graduate student Yuhong Zhu said the resolution is awkward and he’d rather see more scholarships than a blanket offer of free access.

“I wouldn’t appreciate if the school offered me free tuition just because I’m a minority,” he said. “We should at least have to work hard for it.”

Jared Akers, a white student at the school, said the resolution was “odd” and that free access for blacks was unfair.

“That,” he said, “kind of seems like a handout more than doing them any favors.”

I can live with random fringe lunatics making these types of proposals, but when the student body government of a major university starts backing stuff like this, that's troubling.

As an aside, how does something like this work logistically? As in, who counts as 'black' and how do they verify a person's claim to being black?

I have seen some funny videos of college age kids giving super emotional displays of pity to black people, tears and everything. "I want you to have a chance at a good life! I want you to not have to get shot for walking to the store!"

Most of my friends are black (I think because most white Massachusetts men my age are fags) and there's been no apologizing for my whiteness. I don't deny I'm pro-white or proud of my heritage. I treat people from different races equally yet because I have a flag on the wall and make some non-pc comments I'm "Hitler."

A question for non-white members, have you ever had whites grovel at your feet over slavery? Curious if this actually happens or I watch too much YouTube.

You watch too much youtube.
The white liberal guilt people are very isolated from normal black people. Normal black people just trying to do their own thing and not live up to the stereotype generally don't play to victim.
Then you have the militant black people that are all about black lives matter, but those people don't want any crazy white people around them. In fact, i rarely see any white people around the BLM group at my school. It's mostly just sad beta black guys and fat black girls. And if their is a decent looking black girl she usually has a terrible attitude and isn't worth speaking to.

No black American is 100% black; in fact, they're probably more likely to be related to slaveowners than your average white guy. So do they get free tuition for the black side, and then have to pay extra taxes for the slaveowning side?

Let's just give free Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees to all blacks in whatever subject they want.

No DNA test-required, just self-identification.

The cognitive gap between the average black and average gentile-White/East-Asian/Ashkenazi at top schools is already unsustainable.

Let's just cut the bullshit and give them what they think they want.

No more tantrums over the average black SAT score being borderline retarded for East Asian standards, no more tantrums over blacks getting low grades in college and needing to vacate STEM fields because the blacks admitted are lower in cognitive ability, on average, than their gentile-white, Ashkenazi, and non-Asian minority counterparts.

Fuck Madison. I was born and raised there (suburbs). My family all still lives in the area. I spent the first 18 years of my life 25 minutes away from downtown and the university.

I remember being a 15 year old kid visiting State Street (main drag downtown, only busses drive on it). I saw two dudes violently making out on the street at 1 pm on a Sunday.

I could write a book on how fucked up Madison is. We used to joke that Madison is 10 miles surrounded by reality. My 10th grade econ teacher bitched at me for being a "capitalist". Spinster with seven huskies. She never refuted my points.

My brother went to UW-Madison. Spent six years getting a sociology degree because he couldn't get into the school of business. That required a shitload of essays and months of judgement. He split an apartment with 3 other dudes and they each paid over 600 bucks a month. His street parking spot that wasn't guaranteed cost another 200 bucks. He only got in because he said he was part Native American. We have traces of Cherokee in our blood line. We are both super white.

I got accepted into Madison out of high school but said fuck it. I never wanted to go there in the first place. I spent my first two years down in Oklahoma and my last two at UW-La Crosse.

Wisconsin is a great state. I'll always love it. But there's a reason I no longer live there. Madison has been completely subverted. If you openly support Trump, good luck avoiding vandalism. During the election, my dad kept calling me worried about Trump's chances. I kept reassuring him that everything was solid, but all he saw was Marxist bullshit.

The normal people outside of Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse, and the Fox Valley voted for Trump. They are the real working class. They are the real Wisconsinites. There's a reason Trump won the rust belt.

Currently in Milwaukee, not from there. It's Madison's fucked-up socialistic policies plus urban decay and white flight. Not a pretty picture, but the summer festivals are great.

I guess the Brewers are cheap and fun to watch, too, there's that.
