Eh. Heroin junkies have gamed the system for so long she was shocked the guy went hands on. Most stores don't even care anymore, it's just a tax write-off. This guy might even get fired, I am sure he violated at least one minor policy. I use to work for a large retailer and brazen theft was a daily occurrence.

Having once worked in retail eons ago, I am surprised they have LP that is allowed to touch a shopper that is stealing. It's still strange from a legal aspect that the police can come and arrest/detail without checking what she stole first. Also strange that store policy allows for a security personnel to take punches while on the job while detaining a theft suspect.

Not complaining, but this is so much different than when I used to work in retail back before college. Would be interesting to see what some RVF lawyers think about the video. Would it make it harder for the store to press charges or easier?

Yep, the 7-11 by my place is a free grocery store for junkies. The overworked, under paid security guys - who are usually new immigrants - just have to watch them come into the store, fill their coat sleeves with shit and walk out. If they are approached by a new-to-the-system security guard actually wanting to do his job, the junkies just yell at the top of their lungs to "leave me alone!!!!".

Almost always women.

Since when is overpowering a 90 pounds trailer-park teenager, and sending him-her to county jail over a stolen candy bar, a great achievement? Dude did his security job reasonably well, nothing heroic here.

In my youth, a security guard would have done better:
Bringing the thieving teen to the security room, (lightly) slapping or roughing the teen a bit up - nothing serious - then releasing him or her without involving the police. Much better to slap an offender who has stolen a cheap item, than involve the police and put a stain on his or her life (think police record here, rap sheet) over an insignificant event like that.

Is that back when store owner would lop off a hand? The reason it is an achievement is because society has lost its way when it comes to law and order. People are use to getting away with stealing and seeing it happen. They simply scream assualt or law suit if they get touched. Thieves deserve a "stain" on their record. I'd rather they get lawfully charged than get smacked around in a back room, that is some third world crap.

Crazy? I don't think so. I've unfortunately had more experiences than I care to detail involving women behaving violently. They inevitably behave in ways which, if they were a man, we would describe as crazy - either trying to fight people when they're clearly outmatched, or justifying gross violations of the social norms through entitlement - but it's only 'crazy' in that they believe that they're women, and they should be able to do whatever they want ("You Go Grrrl!").

As to those saying that she could bat her eyes and get all of this stuff for free; you're right, but you're missing her psychology. In her mind, she's entitled to sleep with drug dealers, while still living a rich and famous lifestyle.

The last time I shoplifted I was 19, got caught, tried to run, and then was full on tackled in front of the jewelry counter at JC Penny's. It was a little like the Terry Tate commercials.

That was sufficiently embarrassing that I never have thought of shoplifting again.

There's a reason why women's behaviour was always under much heavier moral strictures than men across multiple cultures.

Most women, unless they fear severe social shaming, naturally gravitate towards being bad, and why, when caught, they try to normalise their behaviour to other women with the aim of removing that social stigma. See my Four Rules for predicting Female Behaviour for more.

So, whilst functionally even an unattractive woman like this one could game a man into buying her food, it most likely was quicker and easier for her to achieve her goal believing she could escape consequences, and "I want a candy bar without paying for it", would have quickly become "I deserve a candy bar without paying for it" in her mind. Her actions in the video follow on from that.

Note that I knew some very hot girls in my teenage years, and they - not my male friends - taught me how to shoplift. They referred to this as 'taxing', and they'd travel downtown with no money, and return with an amazing amount of stuff they'd stolen, including, unbelievably, even 12 inch vinyl records, leading me to wonder where on earth they could have possibly hid it, but, as I learnt, it often didn't even involve hiding things, but just a trio of girls using misdirection and 'butter wouldn't melt in my mouth' charm to simply walk out with things in their hands. None of this was stuff they needed, but they wanted it, and being bad was fun to them.

I remember going to meet a few of these girls on a Saturday Morning down by our local Myer Store, (an Aussie Department Chain). Pre-mobile phones, you'd arrange a time and place to ' be there'. So I was doing my best 1980's moody teenage smoke and pose on the brick wall down from the entrance as I waited, only to see the three girls come of the department store.

Halfway across the carpark, two men came up and stopped the blonde one, and then she went back into the store with them. It wasn't hard to figure out what happened, but I knew the law: they couldn't legally-touch her and she was under no legal obligation to re-enter their store.

Of course, one of the girls immediately-bailed and headed my way, when the other fumbled and fidgeted for 30 seconds as her friend was led back into the store, then, to her credit, followed her in.

The girl who abandoned her ran up to me, putting her hands on my waist, and told me that they'd been loading up a bunch of 'good stuff' inside their winter coats. Whilst it might have looked intimate and affectionate from a distance, she was discretely-slipping me a stolen CD into a inner pocket in my leather jacket, which I still have to this day. ('Around the World in A Day').

I gave her a cigarette and we waited to see what would happen, until the girl that followed her in came out a few minutes later and filled us in. They'd apparently lead Blondie towards the back of the store, and, halfway there, she made a fast run for it, opened her coat as she ran, and started tossing items in every direction.

"I shouldn't laugh..." she said, "but there was this ugly old bitch with short hair following us all through the store, and the grody slag was trying to run in five directions at once to find everything that was being thrown. The whole time the bitch is screaming 'I only saw her take the hairspray!' over and over."

Admittedly, that was a funny enough image that I still remember it over 30 years later.

Eventually, a police car came, so we figured we might as walk down and hang around the police station and see what happened. About an hour later, Blondie emerged, who only strutted defiantly towards us - far too cool to be upset by the morning's events - flashing her hands dramatically as she rolled her eyes to show the inkstains on her fingers, and, in that 'so bored' teenage girl way, she threw her arm across my shoulders and said "Pigs. And I'd taxed the coolest pair of sunnies for you Bosch."

She had a court case, but didn't bother attending. She was given community service, which she didn't do. No repercussions ever happened. Hot teenage girls float on an untouchable cloud high above concepts of personal responsibility and obligation, and knowing that, why would they choose to be good?

And, damn that girl was hot.

It's a bittersweet memory for me due to her being killed by a drunk driver a couple of years later not 100 metres from where we then standing.

Know this for game purposes: you will always get further with a girl by suggesting you do something even-slightly bad. I remember a girl in school telling me how a boy had asked her out for ice cream that night in a way that seemed resigned and bored, more than excited. I asked if she wanted to break into the old drive in with me tonight instead. Turns out, she did, which is how we discovered that, whilst happy families were watching 'Back To The Future' and 'Ghostbusters' outside, the Projectionist inside was obviously beating-off to the enormous collection of Beastiality Porn he'd stashed in there. I can say we both went there expecting to pinch some old movie posters or film reels rather than seeing a Swedish Guy with a Jewfro sticking his dick into a chicken, but there you go.

On the plus side, this then gave us a shared private mystery to solve over the next few weeks: finding out who used to work there.

Interesting, was just going to respond to Traveler Kai, glad he brought that up.

I had a client who owned a few retail stores. Long story short, my understanding was that security was supposed to contact the police, they didn't want to risk a false accusation and get sued. Or get in a fight and get sued. Basically, obviously, didn't want to risk loss of merchandise (even if it's a few hundred dollars) versus getting sued (usually several thousands).

On the flip side, there was a video last week or so of an Asian store owner who apparently falsely detained or accused an African American woman of stealing. Now he's facing all sorts of protests.

To be clear, I'm in favor of Shopkeeper's Privilege, and also would be interested to hear a lawyer's perspective.
