One CEO has been pretty blunt about the people he is not looking to hire. That’s right: No snowflakes need apply. And to make sure he doesn’t hire one by mistake, he’s developed The Snowflake Test for applicants.

Kyle S. Reyes, who heads up Silent Partner Marketing in Manchester, Connecticut, wrote an article for the NewBostonPost this month, explaining the reasons for his test.

“You’d better put on your safety pin,” he began. “This article is sure to trigger some of you. Why? Because … gasp … you’re about to get some real talk from someone who makes hiring and firing decisions every single day. Companies across the country do their best to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about them,” he continued. “They want EVERYONE to want to work for them.”

Indeed, companies are aggressively on the hunt for the very best talent. At the same time, these companies now have to deal with upset employees hashing out their political viewpoints and attending marches and protests — all on the company clock. Productivity plummets when passionate debate takes over in the workplace.

“Companies feel pressured to let employees vent and participate in all these political activities, like protests,” a mortgage professional in Boston told LifeZette. “The mood is borderline hysterical when politics are being discussed — and no employer wants someone tweeting, ‘My boss won’t let me attend the Women’s March.'”

Other business leaders are taking note of Reyes' bold move. "My agency is very blessed to have been inundated with more than 15,000 emails and messages of support," Reyes told LifeZette. "Among those messages, the CEOs of more than 100 companies have reached out asking for guidance in how they can tap into this silent majority ... without alienating customers."

"I'm just here to make marketing great again!"

Reyes has decided to take control of his own workplace instead of letting employees set the tone — and he explains some of the perks of employment with his company in his article. "Listen, we've got all of the magical stuff. We have a 30-foot bar in the office with literally thousands of bottles of heavenly liquid. We have an XBox, huge beanbag chairs, an office dog, a private caterer, and a personal trainer."

Reyes notes that the company gets hundreds of people applying to work for with them. The problem? Many of them weren't up to par, for a variety of reasons — many for liberal tendencies.

"Lots of people suck," he noted bluntly in the Post. "I realized that pretty quickly … and I also realized it was a time suck on my staff and me to be weeding through endless piles of paper trying to find the handful of people who actually want to hustle for a living and would be a great fit for our company."

His solution? The Snowflake Test.

1. Outside of standard benefits, what benefits should a company offer employees?
2. What should the national minimum wage be?
3. How many sick days should be given to employees?
4. How often should employees get raises?
5. How do you feel about guns?
6. What are your feelings about employees or clients carrying guns?
7. What are your feelings about safe spaces in challenging work environments?
8. In a creative environment like The Silent Partner Marketing, what do you envision work attire looking like?
9. Should “trigger warnings” be issued before we release content for clients or the company that might be considered “controversial”?
10. How do you feel about police?
11. If you owned the company and were to find out that a client is operating unethically but was a high paying client…how would you handle it?
12. When was the last time you cried and why?
13. You arrive at an event for work and there’s a major celebrity you’ve always wanted to meet. What happens next?
14. What’s your favorite kind of adult beverage?
15. What’s the best way to communicate with clients?
16. What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?
17. What are your thoughts on the current college environment as it pertains to a future workforce?
18. What’s your typical breakfast?
19. What’s your favorite drink when you go to a coffeehouse?
20. How do you handle bullies?
21. How do you handle it when your ideas are shot down?
22. What do you do if a coworker comes to the table with an idea and it sucks?
23. What does the first amendment mean to you?
24. What does faith mean to you?
25. Who is your role model and why?

I wouldnt work for anybody asking so many questions that has nothing to do with the job, I guess that must be why I'm self employed.

This guy is only going to end up hiring spineless yes-men who are good at telling him exactly what he wants to hear.

Well, in the interview on FOX he addressed both of those points.





He said a lot of people saw the word Test, and were immediately OUT. And that the test was more of a way to keep the business' culture intact and find compatible people to work there who believed in the mission statement.

He also said the point of it wasn't to make "Yes Men" but it was to see what kind of convictions people had. He wanted people to take a stance and have an opinion of their own, and to be able to articulate it and back it up, not just agree with whatever he said.

I'd have a lot more fun with his test than the standard ones.

"Have you ever stolen from a company?"

This question fucks me up. Yeah, I've stolen pens - but never anything as big as a stapler. So what are they testing? If I answer no, do they fail me for being an obvious liar? Or are they okay with me being a liar, and they merely want pliant, corruptible individuals who'll lie for themselves or the company when it's convenient? I'll take the nine millimetre heater question over this any day.

There's some rock solid manly man questions in this test. I would actually enjoy answering these at an interview. It's way better than the standard whoreshit questions like, "What do you feel is your biggest weakness?"

Here's the best question: "18. What’s your typical breakfast?"

If the answer's not bacon, then take a hike.

If I were hiring, I wouldn't have a fixed answer in mind for any of these. I would want to see signs of:

- independent thinking
- logic
- ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of opposing arguments
- prioritization of practical considerations over abstract principles
- a willingness to express a viewpoint and defend it

The vast majority of candidates would fall short.

He dismisses doubts about the legality of the test. Given US labor law, that seems unwise.

Took a shorter version of a test that my boss(company owner) and manager created to " make sure you're not a weirdo loser." Verbatim exactly what they said. Very small company(3 people) with open floor plan so connectivity and personality compatability plus sales ability was more preferred than the "usual qualifications".

Needless to say this company has been the best and most fun company to work for while making decent money.

I laugh to this day at that test. Many more companies should give this "screener" test more often.

I also got an unusual test when I got hired at my last job.

"What books are you reading right now, and what are they about?"
"Here, solve this math problem."

The problem was written in a way that didn't indicate what had to be done first (I can't remember exactly), but all he was testing was to see how much I would panic.

Anyway, I got hired, got promoted, ended up managing the office, made best friends with the owner, negotiated working from home, ended up becoming an independent contractor and now they are my main client and I never work more than a 6 hour day (unless I am working on unrelated side projects for much more money).

So that worked out.

He's walking a very fine line with those questions and easily setting himself up for a lawsuit that could bankrupt a small company.

Whether or not the lawsuit has merit is irrelevant. The fact is a lawsuit costs a lot of money, stress & time.

I could easily see someone who wasn't hired suing for discrimination based on their response to "What does faith mean to you?" or "What does “privilege” mean to you?" -the first could be sued on the basis of religious discrimination and the 2nd on the basis of race discrimination.

That being said I have found by saying you are going to "test" applicants, over half of them never follow back up. I have even given them a very simple (think 45 x 2 -22 = ?) take-home test before the interview and tell them it's exactly the same as the one they will be doing during the interview and never hear from them again

But he doesn't mention religion or race. Someone can twist it that way, but the lawsuit would still be without merit.

If you ever have to interview a prospective employee, ask them where their lap goes when they stand up.
Simple question, yet the unprepared or those that have difficulty thinking for themselves can get caught out.

I'd throw in a few of my own :

1. Which is greater; intelligence or wisdom?
2. Can failure be a beneficial outcome?
3. Greatest form of music?

The purpose would not be for the applicant to provide a right or wrong / black or white / yes or no type answer.
The key would be - how they answer exactly.
