So my current job all I do is maintenance on machines, it is very boring and I dont really learn much, the pay if ok for the area and where I am at currently but I have come across another job, have done the interview and they are ready to hire me asap, the new job is building trailer homes, they build it it from the bottom up.

Now I have never worked in this feild or even built things in my life so its a fresh new experience for me and I would be learning a lor about the building process, woodwork, installation etc, in addition they have an area where theh do the plumbing and electric for the houses, electric is an area I plan on hopefully getting into in the future, the schedule and hours are better as well Mon-Fri as opposed to the night shift I work now.

So when it comes to pay its $2.5 dollars less, that certainly adds up especially when you add overtime but overall I would still be able to handle what I need to and save money as well, what do you guys think, no brainer?

Its certainly not a job where I will be making bank but I would be learning something new and can hopefully snag a better position with even more learning.

Ask yourself, how much would you pay to go to school and learn all those skills, and how long would you be willing to go to school for to acquire those skills?

Then, work out how much money you are going to lose per month by shifting jobs and decide how long you are intending to work at the new job. Work out how much loss you are going to take over the employment period.

Then decide if the loss of income is comparable to the amount of money you'd have paid anyway to learn those skills.

If the loss of income is way more than you'd be willing to pay for someone to teach you, then you probably shouldn't switch.

If the loss of income is less or comparable to how much dough you'd be willing to fork out to learn those skills, then charge your loss of income to the school of life and accept the loss as the cost of tuition.

You already said it fits what you want. Plenty of people take a pay cut and few years down the line they're in a stronger position than they were because they added something of value.

Now the questions you should be asking are;

1: Can I afford to take a hit in pay? Can you avoid going out as often to ensure you don't fall behind on debts?

2: Will you be happier? You've already covered this but will money issues be that big of a problem?

3: Hows the commute? Night work has none of the traffic problems. granted all the morons and drunk drivers are out in force but rush hour traffic adds 2 hours to your day unless you are within close proximity.

Kudos to the mods today--banhammer falling with targeted & ruthless efficiency.

I agree with Thomas the Rhymer--if the potential future value of the skills you would learn outstrip the future value of the income loss spent acquiring those skills, then you should consider taking a chance...provided there are no other constraints (ie, you have kids to feed, owe money to a loan shark, etc).

I ended up taking the job, just completed my first week, first few days I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off, my body was sore all over when I wake up in the morning..I love it.

I am actually learning how to use a bunch of different saws, blades, power tools, learning how to measure different things, it feels really satisfying, the 3 guys I work with are great teachers and are helping me understand a lot, I went from a headless chicken the Monday to working with 2 of them when one guy was short Friday.

I still have a lot to learn but its the best decision I made in a while, the schedule is better, the work environment is tougher and more gratifying, its 99% men so we all joke around but get shit done with no whining, I am actually learning some skills rather than just being a cog in the machine, there is an electrical and plumbing area as well and I am sure down the line I can request to be there since I wanna learn new things.

I really have to question a guy who would take boring repetitive easy monotonous work over work that makes you sweat and use your muscles and brains, its just so much more satisfying in the end, my old job I hated going to work, so far I have no issues getting my happy ass up at 4am for this job.

Completely unrelated to your specific field but...

I was an Accountant and took a 30% paycut to be a salesman selling consulting services. I did it to stroke my ego to be honest but about 3 years later, I'm the top salesman in my group and make more money than I ever did before.

I took a risk with less pay and new skills and it worked out for me. So this is meant to be more inspirational than informational.

Assuming a 50 hr work week with occasional overtime, by taking this job you'll be losing 6.600$ a year. Depending on where you started from, it might be a big chunk of money or an ok one. Is that about correct?

I found out in the interview process I would be making more money here in the long run.
