Florida Memorial University has announced it is awarding Trayvon Martin, a Florida teenager killed by George Zimmerman in 2012, with a degree in aeronautical science. Martin had a "love of flying," the school says, and had aspired to become a pilot.

Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, Martin's parents, will accept the degree on their son's behalf at Florida Memorial University's commencement ceremony on May 13, the school announced this week. Born in February 1995, Martin would be 22 years old, an age many US college students attain a bachelor's degree.

Fulton is an alumnus of the school, and the university already houses the Trayvon Martin Foundation, co-founded by Trayvon's parents.

The bachelor's degree in "Aeronautical Science with a concentration in Flight Education" will be conferred to Trayvon Martin, the school said, "in honor of the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot."

"Trayvon had an obvious love of flying" and had taken aviation classes as a high school student, a university spokeswoman told CNN.

So this is the insanity of liberal thinking, the guilt and virtue signalling runs so deep, SO INTENSELY, that even in death Trayvon gets his gibsmedats in the form of a gifted affirmitive action college degree. Oh well, the silver lining is that Trayvon Martin has been crime free for a couple of years now. Professor Zimzam gets results.

"Florida Memorial University" is a black college trying to get some publicity. That's fine, but it shows you how much a degree from there is worth.

Is that how it works though? I thought you could potentially buy titles, but degrees you're supposed to earn. Would've at least hoped the US is not at the level of China/India in regards to diploma mills.

And that's fine. Just don't try to say it's, "in honor of the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot". Just say, "Trayvon's mom gave us some money and his story still sells, so we're giving him a degree purely as a fundraiser."

Much more esteemed universities than this school give out honorary degrees. Hell, even Harvard gives them. Whats he going to do, steal someones job with it?

I think it's kind of pointless to award anything to a dead person. Maybe I'm just not very sentimental, but it's not like they're going to get anything out of it. What's the point? Perhaps I'm missing something...

Zimmerman isn't being given an honorary degree. If r/Pol founds its own college and rewards Zimmerman an honorary degree in Ventilation Sciences, then you'll have an adequate comparison.

In this case, Trayvon's mother is trying to RETCON her son's image produced by the trial of George Zimmerman and the guilty verdict it produced. Their major point at the trial was that George Zimmerman was a racist (much like how the major point of Hillary's presidential campaign was that Mr. Trump was a racist). Losing that trial tarnished Trayvon's image (and his mother's, by extension), so this degree is just a narcissist publicity stunt.
