The Augmented Reality Thread
When we think about augmented reality, we usually imagine something like the Google glass (smartglasses).

There are 2 main problems with that kind of device: they are expensive and people are suspicious about this new technology.

The first step of augmented reality for a large audience will use devices that are ubiquitous (and less expensive) like smartphones and tablet computers.

Augmented reality can be used for:
- game, shopping, learning and work
- social media
- mapping/indoor navigation
- visual search (the ability to instantly access data associated with anything a user sees)
- visual marketing (visual communication to sell products)

It is super difficult to create a company that can compete with the existing leaders (like McDonald's, Google and Facebook). Augmented reality is an emerging field so there is no monopoly yet, and a lot of money to be made. The technology (hardware and software) already exists, and is waiting for money makers.

Quote:Exemple of AR benefit:

An application of AR in retail, IBM utilized the fact that most consumers in a supermarket prefer to have more information while purchasing products.
IBM built an app that allows shoppers to browse through products in a store and use augmented reality to display product information
such as nutritional value(in the case of food), incentives and even loyalty points. Through an AR experience, IBM’s app can also rank products based
on some criteria set by the user, such as low sugar and high ratings. When the user points the camera towards a shelf of cereals,
the app will identify the products that meet the standards and display them to the user.

The Holodeck Of Training Systems
Most user manuals are worthless. They’re chock full of poorly written text, confusing diagrams and outdated knowledge. What if, instead of leafing through pages or scrolling through an online manual, you could simply see your way through a task?

This approach will allow users to see complex procedures animated directly on the equipment they are using. Furthermore, this approach consistently reinforces best practices and incorporates the most up-to-date instructions in the most easily understood form possible — direct demonstration.

Audi, for example, has experimented with an augmented reality application as an alternative to an owner's manual, giving drivers a more intuitive way to explore all the features on their car.

Occasionally you get attacked by a fuckin' Gyarados though...

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.

It's a fascinating technology. Didn't really know how to invest in it directly until I was told about a startup game that uses A/R in a similar way to Pokemon Go with your smartphone. In game purchases are made through tokens that are exchanged for Bitcoin... figured it'd be worth a small gamble to try and get in on the ground floor.

RE: The Augmented Reality Thread
It seems that augmented reality is well suited for battle games. They present a game at 2:20 in the video.

a version of Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade from developer Pixel Toys, showed giant mech suit warriors battling on a real-life basketball court, while another illustrated how the iPhone’s AR capabilities could overlay the faces and names of players and game stats over a live baseball game. Developer Directive Games also showed off more footage of the known AR strategy game The Machines, which is powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 and is shaping up to be a definitive title for the platform’s early days.

Augmented reality is being use in an iOS app for group events. So members don't get lost in festival crowds etc.

RE: The Augmented Reality Thread
Magic Leap is a startup company working on Augmented Reality.

Since the company has raised billions and has never launch a product, some journalists compare it to theranos or Juicero.

Here's a funny thing, they have hired a woman as a diversity officer, and then the cunt decided to sue the company for sex discrimination.

So brave, so brave. tard

https://www.vrandfun.com/magic-leap-sett...-employee/

Quote:Magic Leap is probably one of the most secretive technology companies of our generation where public and media have zero grasp on how their mixed reality technology works. While people like Graeme Devine have spoken about the technology, we’ve yet to see their fully functioning HMD.
With this veil of mystery surrounding the company, Magic Leap has been able to raise hundreds of millions of dollars from major companies and hire talented individuals in order to fulfill their endeavors. However, things have been slowly unraveling within the company where Tannen Campbell, the former Head of Strategic and Brand Identity at Magic Leap, sued the company for sex discrimination.

The irony with this lawsuit is that Campbell was hired to help create a more female-friendly product, according to her complaint.

The key responsibilities for Campbell was to help Magic Leap with the “pink/blue problem” and make the workplace more diverse and inclusive. But she wasn’t able to fulfill her duties due to roadblocks within the company. In the complaint it states, “Scott Henry, CFO, is the kind of man who sits a little too close to women and makes them feel uncomfortable with his body language, flirting and objectification. He generally treats women as objects of beauty (or not) rather than co-workwers worthy of respect. He is a bully and when he does not get his way, he belittles his adversary.” The document goes on further, shedding light on other executives and portraying them in an unfavorable manner.

The lawsuit additionally reports that it found fault with IT support lead Euen Thompson. On page 15 and 16, it describes Thompson as saying,
“Yeah, women always have trouble with computers.” The women in the group, in apparent disbelief, asked Thompson to repeat what he said and Thompson replied, “In IT we have a saying; stay away from the Three Os: Orientals, Old People and Ovaries.”

To quickly pull the plug on this case, Magic Leap has settled with Campbell and came to an agreement that made sense for both parties. The company filed a notice of settlement on May 8th with written verbiage stating, “plaintiff expects to file a notice of dismissal with prejudice on or before June 2, 2017.”

It is not particularly augmenting reality, but I always thought a VR environment that translates .html files into some sort of 3d space would be nifty. Making links doors and pictures float around. To "click" a link you "walk" through a "door", that sort of stuff (I admit being inspired by "Snow Crash" a bit). Could be a step on the road to normalizing VR and AR, as it is modifying the way we access information.

RE: The Augmented Reality Thread
How about classes teaching folks how to augment their own realities....seminars? Ebooks?
buying tech to do so is kinda gay...didn't you ever have to entertain yourself as a kid?

potential hustle idea...just make sure you hire a lawer so you don't get sued by someone who loses it as a result and wire me a commission if you feel like being honorable for whoever decides to profit off of this idea.

Probably best not to delve into for reasons mentioned above but the market is there.

I think there needs to be more projects/apps using AR. I really like it. Recently found this app called TweetReality, if you use Twitter it looks pretty neat.

The white rabbit hole
I like AR/VR, AR/VR is great, AR/VR is the future, there are so many ways to exploit AR/VR.

Life is worthless in this mode

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral
