The Prince William County chairman ran a provocative, Donald Trump-style campaign that focused on the preservation of Virginia’s Confederate monuments. He also took a hard line on criminal illegal immigrants, promising to “lock them up.”

Most public polls had shown Stewart trailing Gillespie by double digits. And when his bid attracted support from white nationalists, many political observers predicted that his political career in one of Virginia’s most racially diverse corners was over. But Stewart pulled out a closer-than-expected finish.

Inside NOVA Wrote:Stewart went so far as to call the former vice presidential nominee “Senator Antifa,” referring to a left-wing protest group that’s become a frequent boogeyman in conservative circles. “This guy, he’s been closely aligned with the Antifa movement, these violent protests across the country,” Stewart said.

I think Stewart is taking the right approach. It's already time to start planning and preparing for the 2018 midterm elections.

Candidate recruitment will be a key part of that effort. The alt-right could, if it wanted to, establish a new political party pursuant to Code of Virginia § 24.2-613 by meeting the requirement to form "an organization that, for at least six months preceding the filing of its nominee for the office, has had in continual existence a state central committee composed of registered voters residing in each congressional district of the Commonwealth, a party plan and bylaws, and a duly elected state chairman and secretary." They could call themselves, say, the Kekistani Party and put that designation next to their candidates' names on the ballot.

Other alternatives include running candidates as independents or in the Republican primaries. It's not unheard of in Virginia for an insurgent candidate to beat the Establishment; in 2014, tea party candidate David Brat defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the primary. Those running for U.S. House as independents will need to turn in petitions with 1,000 signatures, per § 24.2-506. Some candidate bulletins are available from the Virginia Department of Elections for those wanting information about the requirements for becoming a candidate.

Corey Stewart needs to do two things--hit the gym, and hire Scott Adams as an adviser.

And Trump needs to get all the illegals out of NoVa, and to sort out the voting, so the Dems would not hijack it again. If that's not done, VA will remain blue.

Virginia is part of a nationwide trend in which Democrats are recruiting a large number of candidates (many of them women, young people, or veterans)* for lower house legislative races. A lot of these candidates are political neophytes who lean more progressive than the Establishment Democrats. We saw this in the 2017 election for the Virginia House of Delegates, too. This seems to be a change from the behavior we've normally seen from Democrats, in which they only bother to get involved in politics during presidential election years.

At least seven candidates have lined up to run against Barbara Comstock in the 10th congressional district, which went for Hillary in the 2016 presidential race. They're also running candidates in the 1st, 5th, and 7th congressional districts.

The alt-right's strategy in Virginia at the moment seems to be to run one candidate for the office at the top of the ticket, and focus all their efforts on winning that race. We'll see how that plays out. Getting alt-right politicians elected Governor or U.S. Senator would have the advantage of giving us a deeper bench of potential presidential candidates.

Another potentially important development is the gerrymandering case Gill v. Whitford, in which the Supreme Court will be considering the constitutionality of partisan gerrymandering. If the Justices can agree on an objective standard for determining whether a district has been gerrymandered for unfair partisan advantage, it could be a real game-changer.

* I'm a little curious why veterans would be lining up to run as Democrats. I thought most military personnel favored Trump?

Same way that black people are lining up to be the keynote speakers at Republican conventions.

They aren't, actually, but the party really wants them there to appeal to the other side, so any black who shows up at a republican event will be given top treatment, and any veteran that shows up at a democratic event will be given the same.

There are plenty of libtards in the military. My SFC had a huge hardon for Obama, and he was a married white guy.

There are plenty who turn democrat in the army as well, like Markos Moulitsas, of Daily Kos.

And all this is during Iraq and being called 'child killer' etc. Some people are born to suffer, I guess.

Armchair warriors and neutered Washington DC bureaucrats are more likely to support Hillary.
No idea why the Navy personnel is so liberal though - too much time off during long naval deployments?

Navy members can chime in, but I don't think it's a coincidence that most Navy bases are located in or near big urban areas and they have more liberal members. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that more Navy recruits and officers are also from bigger urban areas.

Bet you Navy is most female as well. Look at Marines, strongest men in the nation. Good luck with trying to beat the Republicans in a game of war. Even Blacks supporting Trump at these levels are double the National Average.
