Is it a faux pas to share a joke with a third person present?
If you're in the company of a friend, plus another person that you are not well acquainted with, is it cool to crack a joke or make an amusing reference to your friend that you know the other person won't get?

How would you feel if you were the third person?

How would you feel if your friend shared a joke or reference with you in that situation?

I've been thinking about this and I'm not sure what to think.

That's not how we do things in Russia, comrade.

I'd watch it. This always happens to me:

Im telling a hell of a great joke, for example I'll say "What's better than winning a gold medal at the special Olympics? Not being a retard!"

Next thing I know the third party plays the "well my brother has down syndrome " card and suddenly I'm the asshole.

You gotta feel out the situation. Everyone is different.

Aloha!

Start with more PC jokes.

Three guys are walking down the street and see the offices of the Guinness Book Of World Records.
The first guy says, "I've got small hands. I think I've got the smallest hands in the world". So he heads into the office while the other two wait outside. About twenty minutes later, the first guy comes out and says, "Yahoo !! I'm in the record books for having the smallest hands."
The second guy feels he has the smallest feet, and heads into the office. Lo and behold, he comes out ecstatic that he's in the record books as well.
The third guy says to himself, I bet I've got the smallest penis. So he heads in..

Twenty minutes later, he comes out, looks at his two friends, and says, "Who the hell is Vladimir Poontang ?"

Also, golf jokes are pretty good to start, nobody will give you shit that they or their brother/father/cousin/pastor/neighbor golfs.

At some point, the third person may ask the common friend if they can tell you "that joke about the two guys outside the _______".

Go from there.

It's not so much offending the third person with the joke, it's more to do with excluding them. I've often cracked a joke with a friend when there's someone else there, and I know the other person won't get the reference, and it makes me feel bad because I think they'll think I'm arrogant by deliberately leaving them out.

Also I wonder if they will think that I'm desperate to reinforce the friendship by sharing something that only we understand, like I'm marking my territory.

This is a bit of a weird thread and I've never consciously thought about it until now. What I'd usually do (if it's appropriate) is make the joke to my friend then tell the back story to the acquaintance, probably more to the amusement of my friend and I laughing at the funny memory than to the acquaintance who still probably won't find it funny deep down, but will pretend to if they are trying to make a good impression on you.

It's touchy, but if the new guy doesn't seem cool at first vibe, put your common buddy's name in.

That opens up the ribbing and the new guy might tell an off joke that'll give you a hint where he is.

It can be if he's part of the discussion. If he's just some guy in the room, fuck it, tell away.*

*Unless you think he might be part of the unthinking thought police.

Sounds like his brother didn't win the gold medal...

You could always tell the flight attendant joke.

Reporter: What keeps you awake at night?
General James "Mad Dog" Mattis: Nothing, I keep other people awake at night.

I do it all the time. Excluding the third person from the joke initially and then letting them in is push pull. It can work as long as the other person knows what you are doing.
