A disgruntled dishwasher shot his executive chef boss at a restaurant in Charleston South Carolina. The police haven't released a name and there's no photo of the suspect. But there are references, of course, to Dylan Roof when he shot up the black church a few years ago.

I thought when someone was booked and charged their mug shot became public information. Sooner or later it'll have to be released but this looks like another PR management attempt by either the Mayor or the Police Chief.

Thoughts? Guesses?

The local news has already released the name and photo of the suspect. He was Thomas Burns, a black ex-convict with a history of violent crimes.

The tourism and restaurant industries are booming in Charleston, and King St. is basically the heart of the city, so it doesn't surprise me that the police were quick to discredit the hate crime or terrorism angles. If the man had been planning something more nefarious, he could've easily shot and killed a lot more than 1 person.

Of course, typists are still trying to blame the reaction to the story on Trump, white nationalists, and the alt-right.

Kitchen environment is very stressful. Hiring an ex-con with a "I'll kill you if you make me angry face" is not the best of ideas. You would have to buy him weed daily to mellow him down.

I'm from Charleston and worked in the restaurant industry for years, and I can tell you that pretty much every dishwasher in every restaurant is a kinda shady, mildly crazy/retarded (usually black) guy or Latino immigrant.

I once worked at a pretty classy joint, with a rooftop bar and waiters dressed in white dinner jackets and black ties, just down the street from Virginia's and even there the dishwashers were people who could barely speak English or ghetto blacks.

And this is in a mostly white, fairly affluent city with a strong culinary reputation. It's even worse when you get into areas like predominantly-black North Charleston, where even the line cooks tend to all be drug dealers or "ex"-criminals. Because most cooks don't make much either. At best, you're getting a tattooed white guy with serious drug or alcohol problems, even in Charleston.

This guy's rap sheet is terrifying, but I've even worked in restaurants that had a guy come in a few hours a day from a prison work release program. If I remember correctly, he was a convicted rapist.

The fact of that matter is, the only people who are going to wash dishes all day in a hot, sweaty, wet dish pit for minimum wage are people who have very little prospects.

The only reason this story even made national news, I'm guessing, is the combination of the area it happened in and the fact that the guy he killed was a decently successful chef in a city that draws national acclaim for its restaurants.

But I think the speculation on there being some kind of coverup is a reach, since, like I said, he could've went on a fucking rampage if he wanted to. That restaurant is surrounded by countless restaurants and stores, just a block from a university campus, several dorms, and a heavily trafficked park.

Makes me think of this.

It is the assumption that psychopathic behavior is irrational and if we take away all religion and divine perception of morality, then people will shy away from psychopathic behavior because of "skeptic reasoning".

The truth of the matter is that this guy had a shitty life, a dead end job and a prospect of decades more of it for the rest of his life. His decision to shoot the chef was rational to him, because he would rather be someone in the joint before taking shit as the lowest skunk in the job market. It was probably a form of lack of impulse control, but it may have been a very rational thing to do - for him. He did not go on the shooting spree afterwards which also points to the fact that this was a "rational" decision on his part and not some kind of rage-infused act of madness.

I estimate that 5% of humanity will find an internal moral compass - the other 95% will adhere to the wide-ranging consensus (and the bottom 5-10% requires heavy discipline, stable strict present fathers etc). A lot of the Western and Asian morality is indeed based on Christian, Buddhist, shintoist thinking - it shapes heavily the society even if it becomes later more openly atheist.

This is true - and nobody wants to be a dishwasher. That job usually winds up getting filled by whoever will take it. Being a garbageman is a big step up in pay and probably status from that job.

I am not the least bit shocked at what the media tried to conceal in this story - nor am I surprised at their bullshit diversion to the unrelated story about Dylan Roof. Gotta reinforce the narrative at all costs, I guess.

RE: coverup being a reach - not really. The press by and large did not publish a name or picture of the alleged perpetrator even though such information was undoubtedly available. They know most people won't bother to come back the next day for the follow up. If they can leave you with the lasting memory of Charleston being the home of white racists like Roof, that's better than the lasting impression of a black criminal. Not hard to figure out and not a wild conspiracy, just the natural behavior of leftists in an industry dominated by leftists.

RE: the shooter and his rational thinking - well said, and a perspective I would use as prosecutor the minute the defense tried to lob an insanity plea at the bench.

The general rule is: the longer it takes the leftist media to show a photo, the less likely the criminal is to be a white male. And the longer it takes them to release the name of mass shooter/bomber/sidewalk driver, the more likely he is to be named Mohammed.

I find that to be the case too, but I'm testing that theory with this news story. Boston news didn't even mention the name of the female victim, and nobody is mentioning the perpetrator's name even though he turned himself in and reporters talked to neighbors who knew the guy.

Been almost 24 hours and no name, no photo.... Hm.
