Was only a kid during the disco era, but I can tell you it had a lot more influence on the culture than people give it credit for. It's a mixed bag...some bad music, of course, but then some priceless gems. What female vocalist today can rival the Queen of Disco, her Highness, Ms. Donna Summer, in suggestive sensual power? Listen to this, and watch how she moves and sings. This is what sensuality looks like:





Oh yeah.

What made disco important was its blend of musical styles of different genres: pop, funk, and R & B. It also had universal appeal, no matter what ethnic group a person came from. It crossed boundaries:





You could argue that it was one of the first (maybe the first) pop music genres to have genuine "crossover" appeal. Everybody was listening to disco in the late '70s.
And it was positive music, too. A product of a more innocent time, in many ways.

I live in NYC 20 years ago. There was a disco bar in my neighborhood, Polly Esthers. Ratio was high and I used to pull almost every time.

I cannot even believe there is a disco appreciation thread on the forum.

Disco has been consistently hated since 1979.

I can even pinpoint the beginning of the disco backlash to a specific time and a specific place.

July 12, 1979. Evening. Comiskey Park. Chicago.

After that it was Goodnight Irene for the Bump and the Hustle as a collective roar went up across the country, and disco died.






So for the love of God, could you please allow us to take out our polyester pants, platform shoes, and rayon shirts for just a few posts, before the regularly scheduled musical programming resumes?

To appreciate disco, you have to be able mentally to block out polyester.

There were some good long mellow soul slow dances in the seventies. Allow sweaty teen boys to clutch a girl for six minutes, and go in for the kiss during the long high note at the end. (6:15)
