Hi I'm looking for some advices for Iceland for that time of the year, I would go about a week and it's one of the few places that are not too expensive to fly to from Montreal and that may be incredibly more interesting than going to NYC or Chicago for a solo traveler. I went through a few datasheets but they mostly focused on the nightlife.

1. Can you rent automatic cars there?
2. Is there a few hours of sunshine where you can explore the countryside
3. How expensive are the airbnb/hostels at this time fo the year, will everything be cheaper than high season even though it's for NYE?
4. How is the winter weather? I'm from Montreal and it gets pretty cold here especially because of the wind and I expect Iceland to more or less the same (although I've read it's warmer because of the gulf stream). This means I'm used to driving in winter conditions but are the roads in good shape there? Can we expect lot fo snow/rain or it's relatively sunny/midly cloudy in winter? Lot of fog? Is it really windy?
5. What would you recommend? Hostel, airbnb or hotel? I know hostels can be hit or miss but would Icelandic girls invite you to their pads? Do a lot of them live with their parents? The reason i'm wondering this is because, if I travel solo, it might be cool to find other travelers in hostels and go to the countryside with them
6. Any life hack to avoid some of the high costs?
7.Will it be flooded with americans?

I'm curious about this too since I'm probably heading there in the middle of January. A lot of the past, posted information about Iceland answers much of this stuff but not all.

Thanks man I really havent thought of that.

Obviously if I am asking these questions is that none were really covered in the threads. Rang of the pipe is looking for some answers for these too.
