Trump Tax Bill to take away Alimony Deduction
FYI, things are fluid but the Trump tax bill as it stands now will deny the tax deductibility for alimony paid via instruments dated after 12/31/17.

Unclear if this will survive but it likely will because it creates "funding" for other cuts.

Unclear if you need a decree or just a signed settlement agreement.

If enacted, this will be another transfer payment from men to women.

RE: Trump Tax Bill to take away Alimony Deduction
Actually the deductibility of alimony remains in place for any divorce agreement dated up to 12/31/2018. Any alimony awarded from 2019 on will not be. I'm guessing this could spark an elimination of alimony in many states and certainly a change in the way alimony is awarded now that it wont be tax deductible to the payor.
