He was trying to take a selfie since making this kind of stunts was his way of life. The Chinese Government censored the video for about two weeks. China is building skycrappers like sausages right now, and as soon as one brand new tower is finished guys like Wu Yongning rush to climb it and 'be the first'. So, Chinese authorities want to cut this crap out.

I was wondering the same thing - but it looks like based on these photos taken during previous daredevil acts, he was probably getting into position to take a selfie with the city in the background. Can't make this stuff up.

One article I saw said he actually fell about 35-40 feet onto a terrace while some other articles say he fell the full 62 stories. In the video, it looks like he turns and aims for something with his feet, so I think he may have been aiming for the terrace. Still a little too high, I guess.

Its another proof how people lost common sense for the thrill to get social media attention. Because they don't have a deeper value in their social community. Even more the trend to stand out extreme by do more and more stupid stuff. Its sad but stupidity is dangerous, also extreme narcissism.

There is nothing wrong with narcissism. It is a perfectly natural trait of the human condition. What about all those dudes who died trying to reach the North Pole in the 19th century? There was absolutely no greater purpose to it other than "hey look at me, I'm first!" They even took selfies, and in those days taking a selfie at the North Pole meant you had to drag heavy equipment thousands of miles over ice instead of taking food or fuel that could mean the difference between life or death, not a 150 gram cellphone.

People still travel to the North Pole or climb Mt. Everest and take selfies upon arrival. The dudes climbing skyscrapers maybe don't have the resources to do that so they climb tall buildings instead. Or maybe some dudes prefer trekking to the North Pole, others like climbing mountains, and others like climbing buildings. For some reason I doubt people who die trying to climb Mt. Everest would get any hate on this forum, even though their ultimate objective is to stand on the top for a few minutes and snap a selfie or two before making their way back down.

I feel somewhat conflicted about this. On one hand I have to admire their balls. I don't get vertigo easily but just watching those skywalking vids is making me squeamish. So respect to those guys (and occasional gals) for having the guts to do this. And training for this stuff must be full time because one wrong step or one failed jump and you're DEAD.

Which brings me to the other side of this coin. How incredibly stupid to be risking one's life like this. I don't care how athletic and coordinated you are, all it takes is one wind gust blowing you an inch or two off target and you're done for. It's literally Russian roulette they are playing (no wonder it was started by a Russian) and it's just a matter of time until something goes wrong. I for one value my life a lot more than that and intent to live as long as possible in as much comfort and happiness as possible. Doing a stunt like that would probably pump my ego by a dozen notches but it's not worth dying for. The risks outweigh the benefits by a massive margin.

The vast majority of people doing parkour, rock climbing, slacklining(highlining) do a ridiculous amount of safety rigging and backup gear when they do anything that could go wrong, so much so that it's much safer statistically than something like football or boxing. Maybe not parkour as such as it's related to gymnastics which is pretty brutal.

The reason why people like that get so famous is precisely that, because it's so rare to see someone so reckless and stupid, yet on the other hand so confident in their skill and ability to stay calm under pressure.

Since you are then pouring all your effort into propagating yourself. Your children are after all your germ line DNA,(or at least half) which is really the part of you that is alive, since heredity is the criteria that define life.

It`s quite frankly BS.

If you have done any serious lifting in your lifetime, you are very familiar with lifting to failure, you understand that limit. That guy was at that limit and his fingers couldn't hold on nor could the shoulders pull him up. I think his grip slipped.

That being said, this is a play-stupid-games-win-stupid-prizes kind of thing IMO.

One could make the argument that trekking to the North Pole had nothing to do with discovering unknown territory: it was just a spot on top of some sea ice, no different than the sea ice on the edge of the polar ice cap that marked the beginning of an expedition, and everyone knew it before even setting out. But it's pointless to split hairs here. What I wanted to get across is that on a fundamental level, climbing on top of a tall building is no different than any of a thousand things men have done throughout history that have been celebrated and romanticized despite serving absolutely zero overarching practical purpose.

Men have always sought fame and acclaim. The earliest works of Western literature like the Iliad are replete with tales of heroes taking reckless risks and pushing their luck for the sole purpose of achieving notoriety. Narcissism is just an ugly word to describe a perfectly healthy fundamental human characteristic. One can obviously have too much of it, just as too much of literally any trait is detrimental, but a good serving of it is in my opinion an asset and not something to be reflexively condemned. If humans were solely driven by shitting out babies and nothing more we'd still be living like rats and wild hogs, which shit out babies with the best of them without suffering from futile temptations like curiosity, greed, narcissism, etc.

I used to think that idea until the thought came upon me that if you swap "eat" for "to have children" you realize how stupid the idea of evolutionary "just get to the next generation = meaning of life" is.
