Gents, would love to hear your thoughts on when (or in what scenarios) you feel you need to fight? And conversely, when should you just walk away?

I'm not talking about obvious cases where your life is in danger or the life of someone important to you.

Just last night, a drunk dbag knocked over my motorcycle, shattering one of my mirrors.

As you can guess, I got up in his face and, since the idiot showed no apparent remorse over his actions, it seemed inevitable that we were going to throw down.

But at the last moment, something truly weird happened. I don't know what it was but seeing the dbag upclose made me realize several things all at once, sobered me right the hell up:

1. i noticed he was scared. it was in his eyes. he was young, maybe early 20s, and it looked like he was worried about what the crowd would think of him if he apologized. he was fighting to protect his ego. which led me to realize point #2...

2. i don't know what somebody earning $30,000 a year necessarily looks like, but this kid was its physical embodiment no joke...your generic "30K millionaire." In other words, he just looked like the type of guy who worked menial jobs and never gets out of debt because he spends all of his paychecks on the latest cool gadgets and shit that he can't really afford. Because he cares what people think of him.

3. and then i thought about the fact that (bit of a humble brag here) i'm worth a decent chunk of change now, run my own business, and have a hot piece of ass i could call over to my place in a heartbeat. and so while i have people who rely on me for their living wages, for a sense of purpose, or to fulfill their emotional needs, this idiot nincompoop was proving to everyone that he wasn't a man of any real value to anyone. being willing to fight like you've got nothing to lose means you likely have nothing worth losing.

so even while inebriated, my drunk ass brain instantly calculated that while this loser shitbag did have something to gain from the confrontation, even if it was just a fleeting feeling of finally "winning" after maybe having to take truckloads of shit that day from his boss or some nagging from his bitchy fat donkey's ass of a girlfriend, for me there was no upside whatsoever.

drove off, got the mirror fixed, and went back to just winning at life.

Hmm. Nowhere in that post did you mention if you can fight.

If you're not trained, de-escalate. If you are trained, de-escalate. You never know when that drunk dbag is an ex collegiate wrestler, golden gloves champ, etc that would fuck you up.

Unless defending yourself or the well being of others you care about the there is rarely if ever any reason to fight someone. Throwing hands over accidental damage to your property just shows a lack of emotion and self control and something that surely is not worth possibly catching a charge or worse.

The only reason to fight is to protect yourself. Other than that you're just fighting "coz u angry", like a child. Really you should have just got a police report filed and had his insurance cover it, like an adult.

Your post indicates a certain amount of foolishness on your part.

Driving a motorcycle drunk with a broken mirror is like a DUI invitation to the cops.

I don't look down on drinking and driving at all. In fact i see it as my birthright. The sport in it is having all your shit in order and up to date. This is broken mirror scenario is just sloppy.

People like this just fuel MADD's fire, and make life harder for the rest of us.

I have a line I like to use with normies when I am out. "Someday we'll be a civil society where I can have a beer while I drive".

i guess some context would've been useful on my part.

this wasn't in the US or any western country. here, driving drunk without papers or helmets are damn near a national past-time...for both locals and foreigners alike.
there are rarely any cops out. most of them just stand traffic during the day.
we all drive scooters or motorcycles here. none of us foreigners have insurance.

lol i've been known to scrap here and there growing up.

i guess you are a better man than me if you're able to control your emotions when you're drunk and some fucktard is being a dick.

i'll admit i struggle with that a lot. it's definitely possible that i'm just now coming to terms with something that the rest of you already know and practice.

but yea i'll do better. i'm sure of it, it was a pretty good wake up call.

I am not that type of person who would start a fights, but on the other hand I have that kind of karma that says other to not mess with me, so whenever something like this happens, I get apologize. I have same kind of friends, so we don´t have any problems, until we want to make them and if problems come, we know how to deal with them.
I´ve been to many fights, serious fights, but 90% cases I ask myself:"What I will take on this poor guy?".

But there´s a group that deserves getting beaten definitely - lefties and antifa. The only rational reason not to fight them is possibility of problems with police.

I definitely avoid Arabs, they will always try to stab you with a knife.

Anyway, I think it´s essential for every man to at least train to fight. And the taste of real-fight adrenaline, that´s incredibly strong.

You might like to think it will always be the other person, but it could be you.

Lost Teeth, a fatal head impact, a knife or a gun can happen in a heartbeat.

When I was young ie early 20's I wouldn't say I went out looking for fights, but certainly wasn't one to back down from one either. Looking back I almost felt it was kind of a right of passage type thing being young stupid, getting in barfights, etc.

Over the years I've seen some things happen that really illustrate how stupid most fights are. One buddy of mine wound up being paralyzed for life in a street fight. The kid who did it "won the fight" but went to jail for a couple years, my buddy was in the hospital for over a year, multiple surgeries, will never walk again adn will essentialy live with his parents needing someone to do everything for him for the rest of his life.

Another buddy of mine had a lot going for him, owned a mortgage company, fit handsome guy all the chicks a dude would ever want, nice house, owned some properties, etc. Got into a bar fight over something stupid spilled drink or something, hit the guy one time, guy falls wrong goes into a coma. He wound up trying to pay another buddy of ours who is kind of a screwup 20k to take the rap. I believe the bar had surveillance footage. Never got to the bottom of what happenned stopped hanging around with those guys but I imagine he got taken for everything he was worth.

Point being really think carefully about what fights your willing to take and if it's worth it. If someone punches your girl in the face or spits on her or something handle your business but anything along the lines of you got bumped into, drink spilled, someone wants to act tough its just not worth it.

I can honestly say looking back at all the bar fights and stuff I got into, I can't honestly say a single one was worth it


*Edit, one last thing, someone brought up weapons. In the town I used to live in at some yuppie upscale bar two guys go into an altercation, basically the type of place you don't expect fights and would probably expect to be able to take almost anyone in the bar. Guys bumps into someone spills their drink, guy gets into a altercation, guy who bumped into him pulls out like a fucking bowie knife and stabs the guy in the heart and he dies. All over a spilled drink.

Generally there's no reason to start them. The other side of the coin is that if someone else wants to start em you need to know how to de-escalate. Most of the time if people see that you're not intimidated they won't escalate to an actual fight.

Word of warning: most of you guys have no clue how to actually convey that message. The aggressive, angry, shit talking act most guys do at the club is the wrong approach and will usually just get your ass beat especially at my kind of bars. Being stone cold calm is far more intimidating: you want to give off a vibe like you really don't give a shit about them but would dispatch someone without batting an eye if pressed.

So true for a number of reasons. Typically the people who are actually trained to fight are more even tempered and don't let their emotions get the better of them so if someone is calm and you aren't a trained fighter that's a pretty good sign your about to get fucked up.

Also many times the people puffing out their chests screaming and causing a scene are using it as an intimidation tactic because they can't actually fight.

A few years ago I was dating a mexican/black chick. A few times when we’ve been out, older white people have given me shit.

Once we were walking in a parking lot and I saw an oncoming POS pickup truck starting to veer towards us. The truck kept going until it was aimed right at us! So I moved us out of the way, barely avoiding getting hit.

As the truck passed us, a guy in his 60’s leaned out the window and cursed at me. I said something back and stopped walking, staring at the back of his truck. He braked and sat there. I started walking away and he started to drive away. I stopped and turned around, and he braked again. Obviously he was saying he would fight if I would.

In that instant I reflected on the situation. I had just moved to this city, was young, healthy and making a lot of money. This guy was old, fat and driving a piece of shit truck. He has nothing to lose while I have everything to lose.

I was a purple belt in BJJ at the time so the fight would have been no contest unless he had a gun, which is always possible.

I decided to just keep walking to our destination. My girl right away ran her mouth, saying “if that happened to my dad he would have fucked that guy up. he doesnt take shit from anyone.”
“yeah” I said back to her “and thats why he lives in a trailer and just got out of jail.”

Well anyway in your profile it says you live in Hong Kong, I don't what the laws are like there, but in most of the states your actions wouldn't even warrant a misdemeanor. If you told the judge the drunk dbag broke your mirror and tried to pick up a fight with you, your actions would 99% likely be regarded as self defense, since you claim to be a winner you would have hired a bad ass lawyer while at it too.

Sometimes you want to beat the shit out of some insulting dumbass who done you wrong cause you want justice. And it's honorable to get justice. But you have to weigh the what-ifs: namely what do you have to lose, and usually it's a lot.

Disclaimer: if you're drunk, there's never a good reason to fight because drunkeness hides all rationality.

On the other hand, what if everyone is completely sober and you've given three really solid attempts at diplomacy but they all fail?....

If you need to fight, don't be the aggressor and always act in self-defense, and 2) make sure a friend is recording it.

If the guy knocked it over by accident, then fuck it. It was an accident. If he did it on purpose, that's a totally different story and he deserves an ass whooping.

BUT BEWARE

I was in Panama once at a casino and won a fair amount of cash. It was late as shit and I was craving some chow. The restaurant was a couple blocks away. I'd been drinking for hours while gambling and I guess this guy (casino parking lot security guard) saw an easy mark and decided to rob me.

(I've done martial arts all my life, military combative, BJJ, MMA, Shotokan, etc.)

Skinny dude comes over to roll me up. I gave him a left hook that should've leveled him. Suddenly he starts dancing around and I thought "Oh, shit. This guy has training."

He stuck me in the face a couple times and his hands were like lightening. I kicked him in the chest--didn't phase him. He hit me in the face 3 or 4 more times. I was throwing haymakers and landing with about 1 in 10. He was really fast. For every time I hit him, he hit me 5 or 6 times. Fucked my face up. I kept trying to grab to put some jiu jitsu on him (clearly my stand up wasn't working out for me) and he was slippery as an eel. I couldn't grab him. Never went to the ground. We both got arrested. I had to go to the hospital for stitches before going to jail.

The next day in court, turns out the guy was an amateur boxer about to go pro working at the casino for some extra cash....

I guess my point is: you may have avoided getting your ass kicked.

If you're referring to me it wasn't a brag, it's a true story and we stopped fighting because we were jumped on by 7 military police. And it's hardly a brag saying I got my fucking face bashed in and beaten like an egg.

The point was supposed to be: you rarely know who you are fighting.
