Smartphones Overseas - Are they helpful?
Not sure if this should be here or in the "Everything Else" section, but anyway... I just bought my first android smartphone because I think it will be useful for traveling.

In particular, I like the spanish translation apps. Since I'm going to be traveling Latin America soon, this could help me while I'm working my way toward fluency.

To all the smartphone users, have you found your phones to be useful for traveling?

If so, what features and apps do you find particularly helpful?

For anybody who has used a smartphone in Colombia (I'm going in a couple of weeks), do the local carriers have quality data packages?

First I'm going to spend some time in Bogota. I need to see a quality english speaking dentist, and I heard there are lots in Bogota. I also want to explore more of Bogota because I only had a small taste while I was there before.

From there, I want to end up in Barranquilla or Cartagena, but I want to see all the major cities.

I know that you are leaning toward Bucaramanga to settle for awhile. We should meet up when you arrive. I will be visiting Buca again, and there's a real cool dude I can introduce you to who can be a great information resource if he's still there when you get there.

Why do you say smartphones are helpful? In what ways?

Im actually leaning towards Pereira/Manizales due to it being so close to Medellin and Cali. But im gonna go to each city for a week to see first hand.

I mean you can do pretty much ANYTHING with wi-fi ect.

Translating, Facebook, Skype, Maps, ect.

It's a must have for me!, running my business, Google Translate, sneaky vids/pics of the girls i'm shagging, cool apps, show-off factor.

There's even a Mosquito Repellant app available, and I think it actually works Smile

I want one for travel to use skype, GPS, google maps, translation apps, facebook, check emails, currency converter etc etc though I tend to go away for 6 months at a time so I'd have to buy the phone outright instead of getting a contract and I'm not sure if I buy a local SIM card (as I usually do) whether the apps etc are still accessible using that SIM.
