Headed to Japan for a short stay soon, am considering just using bitcoin instead of exchange EUR for JPY.

Have not used bitcoin for this purpose as yet, anyone on the forum done this and used bitcoin ATM to get cash?

If so would you recommend? Seems like could be a lot cheaper.

I haven't but it's a decent idea if you want to sell off some Bitcoin. Japan has a lot of places that accept Bitcoin, both BTC and BCH. I've heard a lot of restaurants accept it.

local bitcoin in Europe is a good way to get cash imo w/our having to worry about the tax man at the end of the haste

If you don’t already have btc/crypto it’s not worth it. It’ll come up more expensive than the xxx/usd/xxx exchange rate.

In some countries like thailand/Philippines it could be profitable since the exchange rate is bad and withdrawing with card incur extra charges.

So your mileage will vary depending on the country.

Cheers for the replies, I do have some currently, dont mind spending it when it can be replaced relatively cheaply. Bear market has its upside.

It's interesting to see this brought up as I've not really purchased anything with any crypto. Only services online.

I went to a computer store in Colombia because I saw them on the Bitcoin Map. I asked if they accepted and they said not anymore. Not a good sign.

For Japan, check out whether your destination has Big Camera store. They accept bitcoin transactions up to a maximum limit (cant remember what the limit was, but can just do multiples anyways).

They have pretty much everything under the sun except fresh produce. If youre staying for more than a month and would like to stock up your house with neccesities, this is the place to be.

The fees for each Bitcoin atm I've seen have been greater than 15%. If you are using it for instore transactions, it might be easier, and more worthwhile.
