600 Billion wouldn't even come close to covering the cost of universal health care in the US. You're talking trillions of dollars easily. Simple question that Miss Ocasio-Cortez could not answer was how she would pay for it all. I agree with Blue Mark that getting the insurance companies and the government out of health care would solve most of the problems in the US system. Insurance should be there for protecting people from catastrophic loss and not to pay for basic things like immunizations, physicals etc. If you had a true free market system for health services with transparent pricing and the ability to shop around, costs would come way down. There should also be incentives from insurance companies to give lower rates to people who take care of themselves. Fatties, smokers, heavy drinkers should all be paying more for their premiums. Just like with auto insurance where better drivers get better rates. This would incentivize healthier living which would serve to reduce cost as well. There's too many chronically ill people in America today and its largely due to so many people being overweight and obese. It's scary how being big is so normalized. My gf is nice and thin, healthy looking and she gets shamed constantly for being too thin, it's unreal. These fatties have seriously driven up cost and then expect the government to pay for their poor lifestyle choices.
The reason that other countries can indulge in universal health care is that the majority of the costs of modern day medicine including creation of new technologies, pharmaceutical medications and other r and d are borne by Americans. If the other western countries had to bear more of the cost of these innovations, then the cost of American medical care would decrease pretty dramatically. This is especially the case with prescription drugs where we get fucked here so that Canadians and Europeans can pay far less. This is one thing Trump is working on changing, to get big pharma to charge Americans less and pass more of the costs on to other Western countries. No reason Euros and Canadians shouldn't be paying more for their meds. Another big reason for the cost is the out of control malpractice insurance costs in the US. When Doctors are paying 100s of thousands of dollars annually for malpractice, guess who the cost gets handed down to. Of course though, Miss Cortez and other lefties wouldn't ever dream of any sort of tort reform which would help to drastically reduce cost. Lots of things could be done to reduce cost but all anyone wants to do is to have the government pay for it all which is absurd. The fact that Medicare and Medicaid are almost insolvent and the fact that the VA is such a mess should be enough proof that government health care is god awful.
