Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Throughout my drinking career I've had about a handfull of blackouts. That's not a lot concidering I go out 2 times a week and average about 4 drinks. I get a light buzz and the next the day I'll remember and everythings okay.
Put me at a house party were people are throwing drinks at you, and I'll either wake up in a hospital or covered in bruises in a bed that's not mine. If I blackout I'll go batshit crazy, fall, hurt myself, break my phone and lose stuff. This acounts for about 0.01% of my drinking, yet the damage has me concidering giving up drinking forever. Time will pass and things will be okay, then boom it happens again years later.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
If it only happens 0.01% of the time, that means it happens once every 1000 times you drink, which means it happens once every ten years if you go out twice a week.

Yes I know you don't mean that number literally, but is it possible you are downplaying the frequency of your blackouts just to make it sound better to yourself?

It sounds to me that this basically happens every time you go to a house party, and if this is true, it's not normal behaviour.

How old are you?

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Blackouts are not a good thing and not to be taken lightly. That being said, if it has happened to you three times within a four year period, that doesn't indicate a recurring pattern. I would say that a significant number of drinkers have experienced at least one blackout in their life, especially when they are young and still experimenting with alcohol. The important thing is whether you learn from this and understand how to avoid it in the future, or if it keeps happening for "unknown" reasons. There's no mystery behind a blackout - you drank too much. There may be other minor factors, such as tiredness and drinking on an empty stomach, but over consumption is the one universal factor. The question is whether you can use your experience to control your intake in the future, or if you find that once you start drinking your quantity of alcohol consumption is out of your control. I wish that this was a question I had pondered in my early twenties.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
I don't drink at all now because I'm a binge drinker (ie one drink makes me feel like shit/crave so I will drink 10 more if I have that first one.)

That said I never blacked out drinking.

Drugs and alcohol probably dozens of blackouts, I've come to in some bizarre/fucked up situations (I'll post an example if I can think of one I would post.)

Your judgement is exponentially worse blacked out and your chance of getting arrested is exponentially higher.

If it's occurring regularly you should bite the bullet and put the bottle down.[/align]

I was drinking liquor every time it happend. Even through my regular drink is red wine, sometimes I do buy whisky or vodka. I'm concidering getting a tattoo on my hand saying no liquor or something, because I don't seem to learn from that mistake. The next time could be the death of me. Giving up drinking all together would ruin my social life.

Welcome to the club. If you are young it's going to get much worse, so keep that in mind.

It forced me to quit drinking. I am five months in and it's going ok. "Time will pass and things will be okay" I thought the same thing, now you can see my mugshot online....

What Horus said, it's about momentum. Don't beat yourself up, just learn from it and become better.

Sip beer and pace.

Get some soda water in a glass. Besides the obvious benefit of hydrating and breaking from booze for a while, this provides a great mental/psychological effect:
- You realize you can have fun with friends without a drink in your hand
- You learn to withstand the brow-beating your friends give you for not having a drink in your hand

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Don't. Learn how to be a stone-cold sociopath and regard drinking as a useful tool.

If you learn how to drink socially without taking in too much alcohol it's a powerful social advantage. Why do you think Trump is always there sipping on a diet coke while everyone around him gets shitfaced?

I was trying to get black out for a while though but the second one made me stop trying.

Used to happen to me a lot more earlier in my partying / drinking days. Now I'd say it's been more than a couple years since the last time. But yeah I agree you & everyone else that when it happens it is a problematic situation. Maybe invest in a BACTrack Pro or one of their devices that can sync up with your cell phone so you can gauge how messed up you are? Definitely do not drink on an empty stomach.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
I used to get them pretty bad.

I haven't had one in a year. Used to get 4 a year at my worst and maybe 1 a year when I was holding my life together. According to friends I used to just go comatose and become unresponsive. In hindsight, this was slovenly behavior and I feel like a bad friend.

I haven't had one in a year and I intend to keep it that way. I feel lucky that I haven't destroyed myself by now.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
I used to drink to blackout just about every weekend in my teens and early 20s. A standard weekend involved getting smashed, then getting relayed accounts from others about wtf we got up to. Sometimes i'd just wake up with a general bad feeling and i'd just know that i'd made a cunt of myself somehow. Lost a bunch of friendships in this way. You knew you'd fucked up, but you can't apologise for what you didn't know you'd done.

I got into some crazy situations that would have made great stories but since all my memories are so fragmented, theres no background to tell, no chain of events to recount - just a bunch of brief, disconnected moments in time.

I havent blacked out for 10 years or more, but the damage is done. Memories of the best years of my life are gone. Get it under control, or suffer the same regrets.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Only when I drink whiskey.

Solution?

I quit drinking whiskey and I stick to beer and wine.

Once I hit 200 lbs bodyweight and I did intermittent fasting, the blackouts never happen because I have the presence of mind and the non addiction to the insulin response to stop drinking.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”
― Donald J. Trump

If you want some PDF's on bodyweight exercise with little to no equipment, send me a PM and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Don't do that. Do you really want to brand yourself for life, in a place where everyone can see it, with a sign that says "I have an alcohol problem?"

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
One time I snorted so much PCP I thought I literally died and was a ghost walking around being punished for my sins. After that experience I sat down and thought, "Hmmmm, how did this happen? Ah, yes. I snorted a bunch of PCP." Then I stopped snorting a bunch of PCP.

I have never blacked out from alcohol, but if I ever did, I would instantly realize that it's because I drank too much alcohol.

Very simple. If you have a problem blacking out from drinking, don't drink to the point you black out. And if certain drinking settings still consistently lead to you blacking out, then don't drink in those settings, or stop drinking altogether.

It's not just knowing when to stop. It's knowing when you wouldn't be able to stop, and then not starting at all.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Blackouts from alcohol are supposedly as much a function of the speed you're putting alcohol into your body as the total amount of it. Your brain just can't handle a rapid increase in Blood Alcohol Content very well. Which is why sometimes you can drink a shitload, but its over 4 hours, so you're fine. But other times you drink the same amount in 2 hours and you're fully blacked out.

Given that its pretty hard to black out if you just stick to beer and you're not shotgunning them or anything. Theres just so much fizzy liquid in beer, and its got a relatively low alcohol%, that its hard to drink them fast enough to black out if you've any kind of alcohol tolerance.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Besides amount of alcohol, speed of consumption and whether or not you ate something, it could also relate to the type of alcohol you are drinking which might not agree with you physiology.

It took me years to connect the dots and figure out that 100% of the time I had blackouts was when I drank tequila - even the tiniest amount. I would be okay drinking 5 beers, 4 gin tonics and 3 glasses of Jack on the rox over the course of a fun night. Another time I would gave just 2 beers and then 1 shot of Tequila. 45 minutes later I'm gone. A Chinese guy once recently fed me some Tequila in the form of Jelly shots. I knew I had 20 to 40 minutes until I made a fool of myself and blacked out so immediately grabbed a cab and went home.

I have a friend who has a similar response to dark beers like Guiness. All nighters with shots of vodka and glasses of champagne no problem. 2 dark beers and he'll have no recollection of anything whatsoever.

So maybe it's one particular type of alcohol plaguing you.

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
Recently had a blackout night. Experienced it once before in college. I drank a lot of liquor extremely quickly in a humid location. I no longer get to vomit stage with alcohol, I can just go and go and go. Decided to take a break for a minute from drinking. When I return I plan to include drinking water between drinks. I have a buddy who does this simply to keep hangovers at bay. He says he can still get a great buzz, and wakes up feeling good.

Plenty, ended up in some nasty situations because of them too.

Crazy thing is I've not remembered hours of a night and the friends that were with me said I didn't seem that drunk.

Credit Card statement that follows in a few days is always interesting if I've been solo...there is actually a drinking app that follows you with GPS.

Humans have been getting blackout drunk for ages. I've done it, we all have.

There's a push by people like MADD to just vilianize everything possible. These people just want to point the finger at somebody else. They also have things to gain. Money, political power, etc.

I say do your thing. As the Talmud says " You go girl." If you can handle it, and aren't hurting anyone else, go for it.

Here's a tweet that relates:

See, people been doing it for years.

Aloha!

RE: Anybody got terrible blackouts?
What are the circumstances? Are you celebrating with good friends and decide that you're going to have the party of your life? If so, carry on as long as it's not every month/week.

If you go out alone and get blackout drunk at the bar, it's time to ask yourself "why?" Same if you're drinking alone. It doesn't benefit your health or get you laid at that point.

You mentioned getting a tattoo on your hand to help prevent you from buying liquor. That sounds like you have trouble staying away from alcohol and that could be more serious.

Having said that, Kona is right (especially when quoting religious texts). You have a Norwegian flag under your name, so keep in mind that Norway is one of the most alcohol-conservative countries outside the Middle East. There's nothing wrong with drinking liquor with friends every now and then. If you happen to not remember too much, then so be it as long as everything else is fine.

Ease up on the drinks amount. Just drink enough to get buzz and good vibes.

Getting blackout drunk and trying to be cool like the Hangover guys is going to get you in trouble. Avoid.
