“Sesame Street” Workshop head Gary Knell denied rumors in 1994. “They are not gay, they are not straight, they are puppets. They don’t exist below the waist,” The Independent reported.

In 2011, producers said in a statement that Bert and Ernie were just “best friends” and “do not have a sexual orientation,” according to Deadline.

Sesame Workshop doubled down on Tuesday, tweeting an identical statement.

“As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends,” the statement read. “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Dad made jokes about Bert and Ernie being butt-buddies when I was a kid, but it's not funny when they actually are. They're ruining everything.

(Oh, he also made constant jokes about Frog and Toad, and said book 5 should be called "Frog Gives Toad a Hickey". I asked him what that was and he changed the subject.)

The original intent back in the 1960s was the demographic of ages 3-6.

I read somewhere that the reason "Sesame Street" was created was to impart spelling, language, and numerical skills to impoverished kids who weren't getting that stuff from home.

"Sesame Street" was dreamed up during the "Great Society" era of the Lyndon Johnson administration/ I'm sure sexuality was the furthest things from the minds of the liberal/hippie/idealist creators.

But had the creators intended Ernie and Bert to be gay, you can be sure they would have let everyone know up front. I studied this at some point, and remember how these guys made no bones about being liberal. They even courted controversy by featuring folkie Pete Seeger, who had been previously banned from TV during the Red Scare.

50 years ago, if some crazy guy ranted and raved that Bert and Ernie were gay characters on Seseme Street, few people would believe it, because who would believe that the creators would expose children to what most people at the time considered a depraved lifestyle. I have to say, poor Frank Oz. He was the voice of so many of my favorite characters growing up. (Grover, Yoda, etc.) Decent director, too.

It also took me a few viewings of the Blues Brothers to notice the disgusted guard at 2:30 giving Jake back his stuff was Frank Oz.
