Yeah i was going to go to RIO in November to train and watch my instructor fight, but the fight was postponed until February so i might go then. I train under Jean Jaques Machado in California. One of the best Brazilian Jujitsu fighters in the history of the sport.

I just did 4 months in Thailand, training Jiu Jitsu. Would have been Rio, but Thailand is cheaper and the Google Panda update hasn't helped my online income much (fuck you, Matt Cutts lol).

Anyways, I trained at Bangkok BJJ for a few weeks, but felt Chiang Mai would be a better fit for me so headed north and trained at Golden Triangle Martial Arts. Did two tournaments in Bangkok while I was there and made some good friends in both cities. Looking to possibly head back and train at Phuket Top Team in Phuket, or maybe back to BKK now that I have more friends there and a social circle that I didn't have my first few weeks.

So, does anyone else compete or practice a sport/activity and use that as a basis for their travel destinations?

I travel with my road bicycle. I try and ride a few hours a day. This occupies my time and is a great way to explore and develop a different perspective of a new place. There are always group rides to join and it's a great way to meet people. It's of course great exercise and makes it impossible to gain weight. I have to eat enough just so I don't lose weight. I do this as training as well so that when i return home my fitness is good enough to do races. I try to avoid larger cities and go to places that offer more opportunities for a good riding experience. Mountains are key. If I end up staying somewhere for several months, I find I don't get bored as easily when i have my bike.

So stoked to stumble on this thread - I just arrived in chiang mai after partying my way through Laos, and am keen to do some solid bjj training here. Do you recommend Golden Triangle? What kind of numbers do they normally have on the mat?

Also, any recs for where to stay in CM? Currently staying in a guest house but thinking a condo would be better for a month or two.
