(ICELAND AIR) Today i got a one-way ticket from Northern California to Frankfurt via Iceland Airlines for under $600 incl taxes.
Did it directly on their site.

It's permanent vacation time, or rather all creative time all the time.

It seems you've go to book about 3 weeks in advance to get the cheap prices. The route is Sacramento->Seattle->Reykavik->Frankfurt.

It includes a 5 days stopover in Iceland (it doesn't include the hotel cost, it's just just a break in the flight schedule) , which is great since that allows me some time to recuperate from jet lag.

One way tickets on other airlines were far more expensive, and as far as I know it's hard to get deliberate stopovers-- the most you can get is a one night layover, or else you have to pay for two tickets.

Even if I decide I want to stay longer, I can blow off the last segment and just buy a whole separate ticket to Frankfurt for about 200 to 400 at the worst.

It's more expensive to go to , say, Milan.

BTW, The girl I talked to at Icelandair had an adorable accent and demeanor. I felt my harsh, rushed New Yawk/California gruffness was putting her off. What a lovely, lilting English Scandinavians speak.

(EU RAIL) SO once I get there, I've been thinking I need to get around, I know there's some cheap airlines within the EU but I don't know if they are listed on sites like Orbitz.

So I found this nice rail map of europe. It's sort of ginormous, but nice and detailed.

Suggestions of entertaining ways to get from Frankfurt to eastern Germay and/or Poland are welcome.

Since I don't know where I'm going and may not know for months, I worked out a good deal with a shipper near Oakland Calif who also have storage.

I found out the price for a certain sized container ( 4x4x6 feet probably) into which I can put all my hard-to-replace stuff ( old keyboards, drums etc)

They'll store it for $75 per month until I decide to notify them where I'll be. THEN they'll ship it to me when i'm ready. This seems far better then the idea of shipping it when I leave and then rushing around to be ready to receive it.

Also, This works well if I get some great offer to come back to Treadmill City, I can just have them ship it to LA or whichever else place I come back to.

By the way, ever notice there are no exits on a treadmill?

Take the paperback of Bang Iceland to a crowded coffee shop in Reykjavik like Kaffitar. Display it prominently on the table, or better yet, read from it while holding it up and vigorously taking notes. I'd love to hear the reactions.

What is scary about a really good crackpot idea is one feels compelled to try it out, to take the ride, out of a sort of morbid curiosity about what will happen.

ICELANDIC CHICK: "What is that book?"

Train rides within Europe are relatively expensive compared to the low fare airlines.
You might try looking up Eurorail Pass, that might be the best choice if you want to travel cheaply on trains.
If you just want to wander about freely from A to B with no set schedule you might be able to get good deals at your day of travel(depending on routes though).

Thanks for reminding me of Eurailpass; it's worked well for me in ast.

When you say day of travel bargains, you're talking about flights I'm assuming rather than trains?

Yes and no, I haven't been that much on trains lately but I've seen same day offers on train companies online booking sites.
