This only matters for those who rely on mainstream porn.

The people making the complaints to Cal OSHA are the sex industry workers themselves, mostly against LA basin low tier producers. We're not talking anything a heterosexual is going to enjoy seeing. These low tier studios can't afford lights, they can't afford makeup, their "actors" are runaways they find at the bus station that day. And the stuff they make is so far away from the mainstream most people won't even understand how someone could see it as arousing. But there's some weirdo's in Dubai or Russia that's willing to pay a large commission for it, so its part of the industry.

Most of these low tier guys are in the middle of fueling a drug addiction. Getting quick money for their next fix is their focus, not workplace safety. But no one at Cal OSHA wants to bring up that issue. If they really had a heroin addict director show up to one of their sanitary little seminars on how to film porn safely without showing any of the equipment they'd probably freak.

San Francisco has several large studios in the area that churn out porn after porn. There's Fantasy Studios at 9th and Parker in Emeryville (Juan's Place at 9th and Carleton always has directors bitching about their dumb-as-a-bunny actors making ugly fuck-faces and giving them bad reaction shots) and Kink.com (SFW link at http://www.yelp.com/biz/sf-armory-san-francisco ) at 14th and Mission which even does groupon tours of their studios. And of course lots of small shop operations, even home businesses. You get to recognize the girls fast --they're poor as hell, dressed in sweat pants or pajamas, carrying gym bags with their porn shoes in them.

The SF porn studios have always been compliant with Cal OSHA safety standards. And you know why? You never see the condoms because they're willing to spend more than 12 minutes and $88 bucks filming. They use stage condoms that don't show on camera. They spend five minutes setting up the shot so the angle's right. It really doesn't take that much. But if you're on a heroin fix, you don't care. You just want more cash now.

Condoms are required for all sex workers in California and have been for years, and the stage condoms definitely don't look like a 20¢ Trojan --it looks like nothing's there at all. All the LA Council's doing is reaffirming state laws already in place.
