Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity, warns psychologist

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/violent-video-g...st-1500595

The psychologist responsible for the Stanford Prison Experiment claims that men are undergoing a crisis of masculinity as a result of pornography and video game use.

Psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University Philip Zimbardo discussed his research into the lives of 20,000 young men, and their relationship with pornography and video games in an interview on the BBC World Service.

Zimbardo said: "Our focus is on young men who play video games to excess, and do it in social isolation – they are alone in their room.

"Now, with freely available pornography, which is unique in history, they are combining playing video games, and as a break, watching on average, two hours of pornography a week.

He said that his research uncovered a "crisis" among young men, many of whom were suffering "a new form of addiction" to pornography and videogames.

Zimbardo describes his finding in his new book 'Man (Dis)connected: How Technology has Sabotaged What It Means to Be Male', in which he warns that excessive videogame and online pornography consumption changes brain structure.

The excessive use of the stimuli, he said, "begins to change brain function. It begins to change the reward centre of the brain, and produces a kind of excitement and addiction."

In an interview Guardian, he said that increasingly boys were being brought up in single parent households with no father figure.

"Fathers give love provisionally. If you want your allowance, if you don't want me to turn off your computer, then you've got to perform. That's always been the deal with fathers and sons – you don't get a pass just because you exist, just because you got my name on your birth certificate. You're going to do it because you want your father to love you and admire you. That central source of extrinsic motivation is gone now for almost one out of every two kids," said Zimbardo.

He warned that the lack of positive male role models in US media could exacerbate the problem, and that men should set up mentoring groups for boys and schools do more to provide boys with positive activities and outlets.

Zimbardo is best known for the Stanford Prison Experiment in the 1970s, in which students playing 'jailers' behaved with increasing brutality to students playing 'prisoners', exposing the dangers of access to unrestrained power over other human beings.

If women and gender softies didn't feminize an entire generation of men, there wouldn't be a problem to begin with.

Dudes are waking up and getting back in the drivers seat.

LOL at ideologues going about criticizing everything and everyone under their feminist-slanted gaze, even the very things that solidify their power and allow them to sleep safe at night.

Video games and porn are the opiates of the incel masses. Take those away and UH OH SPAGHETTI-Os.

What he does not realize is that most men are playing online games that require cooperation and teamwork, that is why Halo and Call of Duty appeal to so many men, they are not "alone" in a room. As "bad" as porn is I think that texting and social media are worse because they put a divide between human interaction to the point where I frequently meet men in their 20's who have never met a woman in real life by walking up to them and just saying hello, all their interactions begin online and most of them end there.

RE: Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
I've been super into games since I was super young (13 months, according to my parents) and they can be problematic for the sorts of kids this author is talking about. My youngest brother is addicted to video games and it shows. He has that malnourished, under-exercised look that a lot of kids who are video game addicted have. I used to have that look. His dietary habits are exactly what you'd expect for such a kid. I think it is mostly the fault of parents who don't/can't engage their children in interesting activities that build social skills and promote good health.

As much as I enjoy gaming, no matter how you slice it sitting in front of a screen for hours a day isn't doing you any favours.

As far as porn goes I feel like my game is sharper when I'm not watching porn because I want to get laid. When I whack off every day I don't care about getting laid. I'll collect numbers and they'll go nowhere because I have no "skin in the game" as they say. I don't give a fuck.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

Good point, Renzy.

I think a reason I gravitated to games and porn as a kid was because I felt that I had no real autonomy in this world, so I sought it out in another.

Yeah, video games maybe were isolating men, but women are suddenly clamoring for inclusion into the "gaming" world for a reason. Dat aloof game worked perfectly to a T.

Pussy will now rain down from the sky.

Never!!!! Woman are perfect as they are! You are an entitled, basement dwelling, cis, scum!! You cannot handle a strong , fat, attention whore, tattooed, independent modern woman! I. can.Not.Even!!!!!(sarcasm)

Seriously, They do need to do a study on women. Men do not exist in a vacuum.I Kind of like how porn has changed women, they all do everything in bed, and they all shave everything, and anal is always in play now.

An effort to replicate the results of 100 research findings in psychology just ended a couple of weeks ago, and only 39 could be reproduced.

Perhaps the most pertinent question to ask Mr Zimbardo, whose own work I suspect would not rank among the reproducible, is if psychology can even be called a science at this point, and if he is really in a position to be instructing anyone as to the causes and solutions to their problems.

On another note, "Female Obesity and Alimony Leading to Crisis in Masculinity" would make an amusing ROK article...

RE: Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
Any arrangement that allows beta males to receive, or even contemplate, pleasure, entertainment or relief outside of the only life deemed to be the permitted one (serial monogamous "relationships" culminating in permanent slavery to a strictly age-appropriate hag) is now considered a "crisis".

Whether it's "video games", pornography, or "sex tourism", all such avenues of escape from a beta's manifest destiny must be closed off one by one so that he may be confined to the one true path that ends in the HAG's triumphant embrace.

RE: Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
Speaking from first-hand experience, video games and porn can and do cause a "crisis in masculinity." Of course--like EVERYTHING--only when they're consumed in large doses are they problematic. Spending an hour a day gunning down gang members in GTA or jacking it a couple times a week isn't going to turn you into a loser. Up until last year I would play video games for up to 14 hours a day sometimes. It really does fuck with your brain. Specifically I remember being really high-strung after playing for extended periods of time; quick temper, impatient, etc.

Anything can be addictive if you let it. But this study will be hijacked by special interest groups, no doubt about it.

Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.

Yawn,

Call me when a psychologist claims that masculinized women, lack of strong fathers, and an over bearing nanny state lead to men withdrawing into video games (that encourage cooperation might I add) and porn because who wants to game a short haired slut when porn is free and less annoying.

Modern psychology once again found symptoms and not the root causes of problems.

They'd be smart to not remove these distractions lest they want a whole generation of frustrated and angry losers awakening. Porn and video games keep men docile.

I second that yawn. ^^^^^

And here is why you should be happy you have older guys on the forum. I'm old enough to remember the mid-'80s. You wanna know what was going on back then?

#1: The "Porn Wars." Feminists like Andrea Dworkin were claiming porn made men "violent" and forced the government's hand into studying it. In '86 they came out with the results, called the "Meese Report."

What did it say? No one remembers. Because it was laughed at. Men continued to view porn and violent crime has been falling since the 1990s.

#2: Video Game Controversy/Dungeons and Dragons Panic. There were magazine cover stories on this. Games were causing violence, they claimed, and turning kids into "zombies," etc. Wikipedia has a page on it.

Well, the 1980s ended, all those "vidiots" (as they were known) grew up and got jobs in the 1990s, and mayhem and a wrecked society didn't happen. In fact, you could argue the "vidiots" grew up to invent the Internet and Silicon Valley.

Also, keep in mind this was a moral panic over games that were so primitive that if you saw them now you fall over laughing. Yeah, Nintendo's Tetris was gonna be the ruin of society.

I hate to sound like a commie leftist, but whenever men are doing things other than being robot-worker bees or killing for the state, someone feels the need to criticize them to make them "step back into line."

No one stops to think that perhaps shooting at imaginary characters and sexing up women onscreen is actually better for society than shooting up real people and having wanton one-night-stands.

And beyond all that, the obvious other thing to say here is: Why are they not studying the bullshit women waste their time on, like "50 Shades," "Twilight," selfies, and the bakery section of the supermarket?

This is just about every point I was going to make.

Before making a single comment about the behavior of modern men, these "experts" should look at incentives. After all, that's a strong aspect of psychology. Let's look at the incentive theory of motivation:

Quote:Important Observations About Incentive Theory

Incentives can be used to get people to engage in certain behaviors, but they can also be used to get people to stop performing certain actions.

Stop performing certain behaviors...like making a relatively large effort to court high maintenance, obese, dyed-hair, entitled, square-jawed, promiscuous "women"?

Quote:Incentives only become powerful if the individual places importance on the reward.

You don't say. Well, when the reward requires more work than it's worth, it's easy for some guys to feel like their reward is unattainable. Which brings us to:

Quote:Rewards have to be obtainable in order to be motivating. For example, a student will not be motivated to earn a top grade on an exam if the assignment is so difficult that it is not realistically achievable.

Understand, what I'm talking about isn't just getting laid. It's finding a high quality partner to have a relationship with. I'm sure a lot of guys really are losers that aren't willing to lift a finger to get some sun, work out, read, do some approaches. But I'm willing to bet that a decent percentage of these guys dabbled in the game, either a little or a lot, and deemed the payoff just wasn't worth the effort.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

And beyond all that, the obvious other thing to say here is: Why are they not studying the bullshit women waste their time on, like "50 Shades," "Twilight," selfies, and the bakery section of the supermarket?

I'm old enough remember being a very young kid during the later Reagan years. There was definitely a stereotype of a teenage kid who listens to Motley Crue and hangs out at video arcades that was used as an archetypal "bad kid" in the 80s that would end up in all kinds of anti-drug PSAs if anyone remembers them. So this kind of argument really is old news, and it only keeps getting rehashed because there's a strong religious and conservative element in American culture that expects everyone to live in a Leave it to Beaver 1950s type fantasy where everyone gets married, goes to church, starts a family, and starts contributing to their community. Pornography is also an easy target for these types becomes most sects of Christianity believe any sexual outlet outside of marriage is a sin. Whenever a study or article like this comes up (and they do every so often), keep in mind that there are a lot of out of touch, delusional people who think we can realistically live exactly the same way they did 60 years ago, and anything that deviates from that narrative is wrong.

Also as a side note, it's interesting that most guys who get really into video games and porn are the guys who routinely get rejected by women, so it's not like they really have many other choices when it comes to how to spend their free time. But it's easier to just blame the men than to tell women they should settle for a guy who isn't a celebrity.

RE: Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
I am an older guy and I recall when Video Arcades were the center of all things vice and were considered bad places. When Street Fighter 2 came out everyone was skipping school and hanging out at the arcade. I would have dates and we would go to the movies then hang out at the Arcade. Arcades in Atlanta were bad enough that politicians ran on closing them. When the playstation came out it signaled the end of arcades because the home systems were now on par with the Arcade, now the home console is the devil, and online porn is evil. No matter how things change they remain the same.

This is the most important part of the article, because its the truest part and also the part most likely to offend feminists and single mothers, so of course they buried it at the end. If they had opened with this, it would be a completely different article.

Also the article inadvertantly raises a question: if fathers provide emotional structure and strength, and half of households don't have fathers, and we're seeing effects from that boys on....what are the effects on girls?

At the end of the day, at the very minimum, you should have a right to go home, jerk off, and play video games if that's your thing. It's the consolation prize for a shitty day.

RE: Violent video games and online pornography leading to crisis in masculinity
Same article on the Guardian, which of course means: GUARDIAN COMMENTERS!
http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/...are-a-mess

The Author's Pick is a fine piece of work. Written by a man who is self described as "less masculine" crowing about how this is evolution at work. Masculinity is marginalized as manual labour becomes less necessary (men are just cavemen you see, and school totally prepares you for those jobs and not college or something). Of course the article is not about any of that but who cares.
Basically he is happy that his deficiencies are being rewarded.
The rest of his comment is esoteric white knighting, how the women in his life inspire him, and how the author is just a conservative.

Sadly, the people replying to him did not point out the exceedingly obvious: Men dominate STEM so who really is more driven and brainy?

"Fathers give love provisionally. If you want your allowance, if you don't want me to turn off your computer, then you've got to perform. That's always been the deal with fathers and sons – you don't get a pass just because you exist, just because you got my name on your birth certificate. You're going to do it because you want your father to love you and admire you. That central source of extrinsic motivation is gone now for almost one out of every two kids," said Zimbardo.

This part, as someone already mentioned, is going to give some heartburn to feminists and other liberals because it's at odds with their worldview.
