RE: NFL thread
Well, my question is this, NFL have all American teams (Maybe any Canadian?)

But when Patriots won the Super Bowl, why do Americans say "Patriots are World Champion."

Do Americans know that United States is not the only country in the world?

Rolleyes

No, because football is an American sport. That's as dumb as saying we should play cricket instead of baseball.

I don't care if some non-American doesn't like what we do here. And I don't care to tell you to stop doing whatever it is you do in Italy besides make shitty rifles and good food.

The rest of the world supposedly enjoys a game that seems mostly tangential to the main attraction of a bunch of "hooligans" stripping their shirts off and punching and wrestling with each other in an alley somewhere for no fans, fame, and $0.

Maybe some consider that "masculine" but I don't know, it frankly seems kinda queer to me

RE: NFL thread
We have the World Series in baseball too even though no teams from other countries (except Toronto) come here.

Why? Because we're the baseball capital of the world and we invented the sport. Other countries do have significant baseball leagues. But the best players from those countries almost always come here to play. And our not-quite-good-enough players end up in the other countries if they don't want to play in the minors here, or maybe they can make more money abroad. It is what it is.

According to this theory, then futbol is the best. Ronaldo made $160 millions per year in total.

He also makes $34 millions from Real Madrid alone.

not sure if you are serious.

in american baseball, there were two different leagues, the national and the american leagues. Each has a champion. Each had a team from Canada. When the two champions play each other, its called the World Series, even though its just the championship of U.S. Major League Baseball. World Series is just marketing hyperbole and is obvious exaggeration to Americans.

The saying that the super bowl winner is the world champ borrows from this. Unlike baseball, there aren't even any Canadian football teams in the NFL.

in baseball, there is a decent amount of players that switch between the Japanese and American pro leagues. Canada has a pro football league, but the rules are moderately different and its not really on the same level. Japanese baseball is much closer in talent to American baseball. at the amateur level, Olympics, other countries are ahead of the U.S.

RE: NFL thread
America is a country born in combat and our sports are combat and survival sports which we learn in little leagues, boy scouts and school.

The big money sports in the USA are MMA BOXING BASKETBALL HOCKEY AND NORTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL which are all COMBAT CONTACT PHYSICAL SPORTS and NA Football combining the best aspects of chess strategy and ground and air combat. You also have to be big and athletic by and large to play in the NFL which makes most desirable women hot and wet and magnetically aroused on a primitive lizard brain reproductive level.

The other big money sports are baseball, golf and tennis which are a legacy of British liesure class sports designed to relieve their boredom. In the US soccer is not a megabux sport like it is in Europa and Latin America so we leave it to our girls and go into the combat sports when we reach puberty so that we do not accidentally knock out the girls... Just saying.

RE: NFL thread
No need for the comparison between American football and football. There are many different sports out there. Football is a good game cos anyone can play, short, tall, slim or more better built and football players in general are very fit and athletic. In that sense it is a more 'complete' game. It is also a very dirty game with lots of malicious tackles, cheating and deliberate fouls. No queensberry rules bullshit.

Having said that this Superbowl game was only the second one I watched and it was really good and entertaining. Reminded me of classic Champions League comebacks such as Man United vs Bayern in 99 and Liverpool vs Madrid (or was Milan) where they came back from 3 nil down. I actually swtitched it off after the start of the 4th but after checking this forum saw there was a comeback and switched it back on get the last normal time touchdown from the patriots.

It was quite funny actually, in the break before the 4th the British pundits where like "It's pretty much over it's highly unlikely the Patriots can come back" and then the main presenter just said

"Well, you know they said before Brexit and the Trump win"

That line was received with some nervous laughter....

RE: NFL thread
Having grown up in Atlanta, playing sports and loving Atlanta sports teams, I've experienced my fair share of heartache over the years, but last night takes the cake. That was brutal. I would have rather watched them lose 40-0 than blow a late 25 point lead. There was no excuse to lose that big of a lead, and then seeing the collective hamstering from friends and family on social media saying, "It was a great season, we'll get back there next year" only added salt to the wound.

In the end, here's what it came down to: Atlanta forgot just who the fuck they were playing. I remember reading a story a few years back about a hunter in Montana who downed a massive grizzly. The beast was laying there, bleeding out, struggling with its final breaths. The hunter nonchalantly approached the grizzly to get his victory photo, not remembering that the nearly dead beast was a fucking grizzly, the alpha predator of North America. Once the hunter got close, the grizzly got one final swipe before taking its final breaths--a blow that instantly killed the hunter.

I tell that story because Atlanta was the hunter and New England was the grizzly. As much as I dislike the Patriots, there is no denying that Brady and Belichick are arguably the greatest head coach/QB duo in the history of the NFL--the alphas of the league. Atlanta struck a mortal blow with that third quarter touchdown. They were up 28-3. Then they got careless and stupid. I won't get into the god-awful play-calling, the terrible clock management, and being the second team that now wishes it had run instead of passed late in a Super Bowl vs the Patriots.

Atlanta quit being smart, they thought they had the first championship in franchise history locked up. The defense quit being aggressive, despite the fact that Tom Brady had won four Super Bowls before last night. Shanahan got caught sniffing his own asshole while one of the greatest coaches of all time continued to strategize and adjust accordingly.

And the Patriots did what they do--they finished the game like champions.

Last night was a brutal pill to swallow, but it has helped me with one thing. Over the last few years, I've drastically reduced my sports consumption. Now I only watch my teams and maybe a few key match-ups and big games. But the Falcons have now proven that I should quit taking them seriously, because they aren't champions and probably never will be in my lifetime. Everyone says, "Better luck next year." Tell that to the Panthers who didn't even make the playoffs this season. Perhaps Atlanta will prove me wrong and return next season with a vengeance and a chip on their shoulders. But, being a lifelong Atlanta sports fan, I know it's more likely that Matt Ryan comes down to earth and doesn't have another MVP season. I'll still watch some games and check the scores, but I'll now be more likely to go out rather than wasting 3-4 hours watching them play. Last night marks the last time I ever expect anything from an Atlanta team.

Was for Atlanta in a show of NFC South solidarity...

Would've traded the trajectory of Atlanta's season with Carolina's from the year prior.

I wasn't surprised by the first half.

I wasn't surprised be the conclusion.

I can read that sting in Serious Sam's post above.

Hell of a game. The better team won... but DAMN did Atlanta snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Panthers still in freefall from their loss. This stuff is real. To work so hard and just fuck it all away like that is the type of experience that breeds demons. It is just a game to us mortals but for those men football is all they got.
This fuck up will stain that lockeroom and they either come back stronger or fold like cheap suits.

RE: NFL thread
NFL came to Serbia's TV back in 2001 when Patriots and Brady got their first ring. Me and lots of my school friends immediately got hooked. I've only followed it closely for maybe four years and I don't think I watched a game since. Nevertheless, I did enjoy in the fact that the franchise and Brady went on to such great success but as an outsider I had trouble understanding how in the hell did Brady went from a hero in a Cinderella story to the most hated athlete on other side of the Atlantic. Seeing the game result this morning filled me with great joy.

Edit: Although seeing the underdog win and hating on the king is fun, people that enjoy sports should be thankful when they are witnessing history being written. I remember when I was younger and was really into Moto GP I had a dislike for Valentino Rossi (which is almost embarassing to admit now considering how likeable and a great driver he is), until I realized what a privilege it was to watch the greatest motorcycle driver ever in action. I'm hoping the Brady haters will come to the same conclusion.

All Atlanta had to do was run the football after that great catch by Quintoris aka Julio. They only ran the ball 5 times in the 2nd half. 25 point lead -- run the ball -- run the clock out -- win the game. Terrible time management/play calling by Atlanta's head coach and offensive coordinator.
