I know what I'm about to tell you from direct experience, and of course, biology.

Coaches at both the HS and college level in the USA will not wait or care to understand the differences in technique and mental edge when winning now is all that matters. As a result, someone who develops into his body later (on average, the caucasian) even though he may have great potential, will almost never get the shot against a guy who has body hair and growth spurts far earlier. Ask any HS coach and he will tell you that in basketball, quickness, size and speed overcome the other parts of the game that are important later, by leaps and bounds.

Now the guys you mention are exceptions in that they are just really tall, good athletes. But they were always tall (as the above).

My point here is that the development and recognition of talent is far less important and the external factors (winning now, notoriety = money here or in the near future) rule all; especially in basketball, which is overwhelmingly biased already to height in order to be better, which few other sports require as opposed to power, speed and technique.

It makes me happier that Seattle is clearly on the down and out and this will only add to it. Their days in the limelight are all but over, as the O-line and offense is finally coming back down to earth after pretty much getting lucky and lasting for the time it did, when it already had had some glimpse of such problems.

I think the "ALL Black Media" knows a Black Power sign when they see one, they are quite proud of it actually, since they are accurately naming it that and boasting about how wonderful it was.

The point of the Tom Brady analogy isn't what kind of salute it is, it's that he would never do such a thing, because he is a classy player and ambassador for the NFL. If he did he would be erased from sports history, and another player doing something identical highlights the inequality of treatment based on race. This doesn't seem like equality to me.

I know, I was making a point for discussion.

It's not just American whites, but a general focus on athleticism as the only factor. Kobe and many other players have attacked the AAU system for this. Europe is just better at creating skilled players now.

Barry Sanders used to celebrate touchdowns by tossing the ball gently to the ref.

There was some class to this. Let the run speak for itself.

I blame everything on air guitar and the high five, and maybe a little on Muhammad Ali.

Muhammad Ali was the first athlete I ever saw who made no effort to be thankful or humble.



It shocked people at first, but because he was the first, and charming and funny, people accepted him.




He was the exception. People loved that there was someone so brash and confident like Ali. It only worked when there was just one of him.

Like, it is okay to have a few prankers out there, but if everyone is pranking all the time, like now, things slow down and don't work so well.

In the seventies there was only the low five, and it was casual, cool, done in passing. Can't even find a gif of it or a photo.

Someone brought it up over the head and then everyone was doing it, not just the players. High Fives. Then High Tens, then airborne High Tens.

People used to think guitar solos were cool with the faces they made, but the skill was the price of admission to the face. Suddenly everyone was doing it, skill or no skill.




And the celebrating and the signalling went from being punctuation to an amazing feat and became an end in its own.

Still, Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson supposedly started the over the top celebration in the end zone in the early seventies.




A thing of great ugliness that set the stage for everything that has happened since.


Dishonorable mention goes to Mark Gastineau who, in the eighties, took the self aggrandizing celebration out of the realm of something special, like a touchdown, and now could be applied to a tackle or anything else:



It has been down hill ever since. It isn't enough to do something amazing, you have to do a dance to brag about it, and even if you didn't do anything amazing, you can still do the dance to brag about it because you watched it, and even if you didn't watch it, you can still do the dance just because you're you.

So this dude did a black power salute after a play? What is the significance?

I mean, if you are concerned with race issues in a white world in the sixties, and decide to make a gesture at a world event, that takes some guts.




It is not a dance in the end zone.

Nowadays though? Black Power salute? Please. Today, everything is larping and signalling.

It is just the millennial twist on the attention getting celebration after a play. The twist being, you want to do something to show off, but you also want moral bragging rights, so you combine the two.

It is hard to see most political gestures these days as anything other than a selfie with moral superiority.

And I guess we won't go back to just tossing the ball gently to the ref at the end of a play.

Haven't checked back in here in a while since my long post but I've read a lot of interesting comments since and would like to respond to them but there's too many to quote so hopefully people will follow what I'm referencing.

Someone responded to my quote about basketball not being relative to white people because of freak athletes at freak heights. I really disagree with this. It's one of the only sports average white kids can just pick up and play in the neighborhood, the street, or a gym. They don't need to have the same exact physical skills or be able to dunk easily, they just need to know how to play the game and have easy access to, which no sport tops in that regard.

Another person here thought I was overrating golf and that the youth wasn't buying into it. You have fair points, but I see golf being better in the long-term. The NFL needs to take a bigger hit first, that I'm willing to admit. Once NFL takes the full safety hit, this will open up the door for people to look for sports that they can play for the longest period of time with the most minimal health risk and maximum earning potential. Combine all three of those, there is no better opportunistic sport than golf. With Tiger Woods changing the sport and a lot of 20 year olds being talented all at once, more people will realize just how much money there is to be made here. As I said before, golf is not built on 50k stadiums and max TV ratings like major sports. They are built on clubs, rich donators, and sponsors. Unlike other sports, golf really only needs 20-30 relevant players to carry the generation and they certainly have that right now.

As for baseball, their problem is not that it'll die from the ground up like football because they have plenty of representation in the youth level. Their problem is a pace of play issue and it is the ultimate stop and go sport which does not transition to television well in this day and age. I love baseball, but as more people become casual sports fans and we start to see less 24/7 sports channels, baseball will take a hit in popularity. They are having attendance and ratings issues with the oldest fan base in the major sports. It doesn't carry over to the immediate action and low attention span of this day and age because 162 games is too long of a season and people don't want to spend over three hours watching the slowest sport.

Back to football and their issues. Incognito betrayed all of the players and got ex-communicated from the football community for throwing them under the bus, he didn't really create a lot of change, just a very annoying sideshow that pissed the players off and got some fans to think of players as more of thugs. Sherman wasn't that bad, even at the time I thought that was one of the best sideline interviews I've ever seen. Most true football fans feel the same way there, maybe he polarized some casuals but I think the poster that referenced him exaggerated his backlash. Michael Sam I agree with that ESPN doubled down on political issues too much. They were honestly trying to create the new Jackie Robinson and just failed miserably since he was a bust. I think people would've bought into his story if he was a good player, but what annoyed most true fans was that he was getting special treatment when he was a practice squad player for a very limited time.

I was on Kaepernick's side during his protest because I thought it was a good approach to address other American issues besides BLM and respected his right to freedom of speech. Thing is, the national anthem story is getting old and they're beating a dead horse, I just really don't care anymore and I could give a damn about the other protests one way or another. I don't care if they do it or not, I'm just not following it nearly as close because it's getting very stale.

What annoys me about the NFL right now are the ridiculous hit penalties. If you hit a guy half a step out of bounds, it's a late hit penalty. In the Raiders-Jets game, Bruce Irvin spun around and threw the Jets running back to the ground to tackle him and keep him from getting away. They call unnecessary roughness when I thought that was a great play. The competition committee has understandable concerns about safety due to CTE backlash, but they're expecting these players to be absolutely perfect and know where they are on the field at all times. I don't think they realize how hard it is to pull up from a tackle/sack at this type of speed.

Suits and a couple others were saying it's beta to where sports jerseys as well. I'll be that guy to defend this and disagree. Sports used to be my whole world when I was younger, so I understand the mindset a bit. I've cooled off now that I'm older, but I look at sports as no different than other forms of entertainment. To say people that wear jerseys are beta is like saying it's beta to wear a shirt from a TV show, band, movie, or really any form of entertainment. I just think it's a little hypocritical to go after sports if the same people watch any form of TV series, movies, or listening to any band and play any video games. The point is I think it's ok to have an entertainment interest as long as it doesn't consume 100% of your life. If you protest sports, than I think you need to protest any form of digital entertainment.

One last thing I want to address. I have no idea who said this, but the person that referenced younger people not buying cable and prefer Netflix/Hulu/Amazon is 100% right. I have a friend that works in a Tier 2 city in America making over 40k a year at 24 years old. He does not have a cable package because he thinks it's too much money compared to what you get with Netflix. I saw this in the Rotten Tomatoes thread too and it's also effecting movie theaters. Sports are eventually going to have to change into a streaming service that you pay a certain amount of money for to get the exclusive package. Now, I see NBC Sports and CBS already transitioning to this, so these networks could potentially keep these sports. But I absolutely think this is where sports are going because when Netflix unleashed streaming service, it was a game changer and the people have responded. Next TV contracts will be pivotal, and I expect sports to go to streaming in the next 20-30 years.

Soccer will soon be the most popular sport in America, The US National team will soon be one of the best and the MLS will soon be a top league, at least in the top 5 or so.

I don't mean tomorrow but I would say within the next 10 years.

Even the Canadian national team is getting a lot better, it is going from horrible to bad.

Once Brady retires NFL will take an even bigger hit in ratings and attendance. He brings a lot of women / societal interest to the NFL.

Dak seems to be above average at best and Cam Newton gets hit so much every game he won't have a long career anyways. There are aren't as many stars and interesting players to follow. Running backs get discarded after a couple years, the turnover is so high the league will be a revolving door of anonymous players.

On point, the NFL ratings may be declining but it definitely isn't dying. Gillette stadium has sold out every game since 1994, Lambeau has a season ticket waiting list of about 30 years. Fantasy football and NFL Redzone have definitely adapted to the smartphone-addicted generation who don't have the attention span for a 3 hour game, and with all the streaming options available the NFL's revenues inevitably declined, but that's not to say the sport isn't as popular.

As for the social justice angle and all the 6 point lists in previous posts, it seems like a reach to me. Most NFL fans don't think Michael Sam is a hero, or that Colin Kaepernick is Martin Luther King or especially that Lady Gaga is the perfect choice for the Super Bowl Halftime show. That's not going to stop them from watching on Sunday, no matter how much they swear it's the last straw. Until there's a viable alternative, which soccer will never be outside of Hispanic-dense states, the core audience will remain

There was an interview on Conan I believe where Bill Burr said that the commissioner could punt a baby across his office and it wouldn't stop him from tuning in. I don't think he's alone in that sentiment

This is from the last year in the US, from a recent WaPo article. American football is definitely decreasing in popularity due to middle-class parents fearing for their children's safety. But the two favourite successors mentioned in the thread so far (basketball and soccer) aren't the likely winners - they're too dissimilar in style, lacking in aggression/physicality, and possibly a bit too ghetto / ethnic for a lot of middle class Americans to love.

Rugby is the closest major sport to American football in terms of physicality and rulebook. But it has far lower injury (and particularly concussion) rates. And it's also got quite a lot of 'snob factor' appeal to it, in that its generally an upper-middle class game in parts of the world where its popular. Its fast becoming a big thing in preppy areas of the North-East of the US. Where the upper-middle class schools go, the middle class schools will follow. And where the moneyed supporters go the sponsors will follow. Its also now an Olympic sport, which is helping massively.

If it's growth is managed properly its very well positioned to be the sport that benefits most from a decline in players and support for the NFL and college / high school football.
