I think you're being just a touch too hard on her.

Granted, you are correct in pointing out that girls who look like her aren't remarkably rare. Many large public and private colleges in the USA (particularly the big names in the big sports conferences like the SEC, Big 12, PAC-10, etc) can count a number of females similar to her among their student body. I'm at an Ivy (no mecca for babes), and even here I am confident I could count at least 1, perhaps 2 girls who aren't too far off of Kate physically (tall, blonde, toned bod, pretty face).

That being said, they're not starting from zero here when they promote Kate Upton. Americans have an obsession with tall, leggy blondes. They have the highest sexual market value of any kind of woman in this country, enough so that they can quite consistently be overrated relative to other phenotypes. Even many modern Europeans do not put them on the pedestal Americans do.

Kate Upton fits that leggy-blonde description while having significantly bigger titties and a bit more height than usual, so she wasn't exactly a hard sell. This is far from a "lump of coal"-she's easily marketable to Americans. Scandinavians, perhaps less so, as I doubt she'd be considered too remarkable in Stockholm (Vicious, a Swedish user here, once remarked that even Blake Lively would be a 5 or 6 in that market).

That being said, let's be rational with the ratings. A 5 or 6 implies that we're looking at an average female physically. Maybe she's not as world beating as some other supermodels, but she isn't a plain jane. She's an 8 at a minimum IMO (maybe 7.5 on a bad day), and an easy 9 when prepared a bit (the right clothes + a little makeup and good lighting). This is a hot girl with a good, fun personality. A tad overrated, yeah (America does that to blondes quite often), but far from unattractive.
