An unusual amount of brain area deals with the control of facial features. We have evolved to be genetically programmed to make a good deal of use of our faces, as well as pick an immense amount of unconscious information from other people's faces. This is the ability of the female body to absorb other people's genetic material and to incorporate the material into her own body. Recent studies have found that microchimerism can even manifest in the brain.

What does this mean? It means that if a female is pregnant with a child, or receives a blood/organ transfusion, or receives some other genetic payload (such as a man's semen), then her body may end up absorbing some of that DNA, splice it into her own genetic code, and she will end up carrying it with her, for as long as the cell that absorbed the genes will live and breed.

There is also evidence that microchimeric DNA can even splice itself into the DNA of brain cells, although how the gene material manages to migrate across the blood brain barrier remains, for now, a mystery.

Now, the consequences of microchimerism are still not understood, so from this point on I'm giving my speculation. My speculative hypothesis is this: that microchimerism causes inflammation which causes damage to the tissue surrounding it.

Why should this be? Well, the human immune system will naturally try to destroy any cell that carries DNA that doesn't match the host's code. This makes sense because unmatched DNA is usually from bacteria or viruses or parasites; or the human cell has gone cancerous or is itself infected with a virus/parasite. In other words, foreign DNA usually means the presence of foreign invader, and the immune system will attempt to destroy any cell that harbors foreign DNA to protect the body.

So presumably, when these microchimeric DNA strands insert themselves into brain cells, the immune system cells of the brain will become alarmed and try to nuke them. In essence, some brain damage occurs due to the presence of microchimeras.

Now consider this: the wider the variety of foreign DNA, obviously the greater the amount of possible targets that will activate the immune system, which will lead to a greater amount of immune inflammatory activity to kill the affected cells. A few rogue strands of DNA might go unnoticed, but if you pile a lot of junk DNA into the brain, the immune system will react.

Since women who undergo unprotected sex expose themselves to this danger of microchimerism, a woman's best bet is to have unprotected sex with as few partners as possible. The less variety of DNA she absorbs, the less likely the immune system will go into alarm mode. Interesting idea - could be true to a degree.

Although I was quite curt, understand that I could spend all day constructively criticizing ideas with no supporting evidence, and I don't like to waste my time doing that unless the opposing party supplied some themselves. Since you have kindly supplied your sources, I'll give a more constructive reply. For the record, I had in fact read the PLoS paper before replying, although I hadn't bothered to download the Science paper, which I've now read.

In this case, you're making the extraordinary claim that haploid cells (or haploid DNA) are somehow able to find its way into a woman's brain (or brain cells) and induce inflammation. The mechanism of microchimerism in the brain is thought to require the unique circumstances of pregnancy to allow for transfer across the blood-brain barrier.

For this 'hypothesis' to hold any possible chance of being true, you should at least have evidence supporting it. In this case, your evidence consists of (in order of the sources you presented):

1. Microchimerism is a thing.
A: I don't dispute this. Microchimerism is in fact a thing.

2. Microchimerism can be found in female brains.
A: I don't dispute this. Microchimeric cell populations were found in females.

3. Not all microchimerism IN CIRCULATING BLOOD can be explained by full-term pregnancies.
A: Agreed.


However, you used these three pieces of evidence to jump into a fantastical hypothesis that has no supporting evidence. The hypothesis relies on a framework made of multiple points that haven't been shown (three which come to mind presented below):

1. Haploid DNA from sperm cells are capable of being inserted into the genome of a human.

2. These cells are then capable of transferring across the blood-brain barrier in the absence of the pregnancy-mediated changes in its filtering capacity.

3. These chimeric cells cause inflammation.
Additional info: In both of these studies, they tested whether microchimerism was more prolific in study subjects with diseases that are disruptions in either autophagy (Alzheimer's disease, although this is a simplification) or inflammation (Rheumatoid arthritis). Alzheimer's disease patients actually had less chimeric cells and there was no difference between patient populations in the rheumatoid arthritis study. Although this hardly rules out anything, it does make inflammation in the brain more unlikely.

Additionally, you can hardly call the author's claims in the Science paper support, and certainly not some hypothesis, just a 'possibility' (their words). They give multiple potential explanations that are much more probable, with evidence suggesting that they actually take place (below quote). And even if sex was a potential explanation, all three of the above points still hold true, because circulating blood is not the same as the brain.

While there may very well be something to this microchimera idea, I think we could look at 3 other more mundane sources for the development of the 1000 cock stare.

You're right that I have no evidence that haploid DNA can migrate to the brain. But the more I learn about the human body, the weirder I realise it is, and I wouldn't be surprised if DNA can actually do that. The female body has a unique tolerance to foreign genetic material - that's why the fetus isn't nuked the moment it forms inside a woman's body.

An alternative possibility is that a man's semen will accumulate in a woman's pelvis, where it is slowly broken down by the immune system (it's not like semen can just vanish into thin air) and the inflammatory molecules created from can then diffuse throughout the body, including the brain, and trigger off cell death.
