RE: Protein powder is a scam.
7 Rules to Optimize Protein Intake
Quote:People, if you’re paying more than ~10 dollars/lb of protein you’re getting duped, as the manufacturer is preying on your ignorance. Whey is the king protein, period. It’s better than the 100 dollar fish protein from a certain manufacturer who is big in the land of shirtless dudes and vibram 5 finger clad women. Why? Because its amino acid profile is better, i.e. it has more BCAAs (leucine/isoleucine/valine) and a higher concentration of essential amino acids. Also, it’s cheaper…so that seems to be a good point in and of itself. Whey trumps casein on satiety, MPS rates, and time that it keeps plasma (blood) amino acid levels elevated. In other words, all the nonsense the bro at GNC regurgitates about casein being a slow digesting protein that is good to take at night because it slowly releases amino acids from the GI tract is BS. Well, to be fair to him (bro) or her (bra?), it [casein] does more slowly release amino acids into the blood stream from the gut, but it’s TOO SLOW to actually raise blood amino acid levels high enough to effectively drive muscle protein synthesis unless you dose it much higher than whey, which is the king of proteins. Also, whey keeps you fuller, longer (satiety) than casein, and it’s CHEAPER. Yep, whey is better than egg protein, beef protein, hemp protein (sucks), rice protein (sucks), pea protein (double sucks), and soy protein (double sucks). Whey protein concentrate, one of the cheapest options out there is where everyone should start for whey supplementation. If it doesn’t upset your GI tract, then stay there and never look back. If it does- and it will in some who are sensitive to an amino acid fraction (beta lactalbumin) – switch to whey protein isolate, which has this fraction removed. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) might actually be superior to whey protein isolate (WPI) because b-lactalbumin is a very concentrated source of leucine- so I prefer WPC in those who can tolerate it. No Virginia, WPI doesn’t always mean better and as you just learned- more expensive is not always better.

RE: Protein powder is a scam.
I love Greek Yogurt but where is OP (and anyone else on here) getting such a good deal on it???
I just did the math, when I buy a 32oz jug of Greek Yogurt at the grocery store, it's $6 for 32oz 4 cups/ 4 servings of Yogurt. 20g protein per cup, or $1.50 for 20 grams of protein.
For my whey, I splurge to get grass fed Promix - $80 for 5 lbs for plain whey. Yes this is pricier, but I feel better after consuming it than I do Optimum or other brands- something a lot less harsh/processed about it. To each his own, not hating on cheaper whey, just personal preference. But regardless - I did the same calculation and it comes out to $0.88 for 20g of my "overpriced scam" whey protein - almost half the cost of Greek Yogurt.
Personally I love Greek Yogurt, but it's damn expensive! I'd have to find it for closer to $3/jug before it's was competitive with my already-pricey whey. Does Costco or anywhere else sell it that much cheaper?? Right now it's more of a treat I reward myself with, if I get shit done, as I love the taste/texture and it seems to settle my stomach if I ate something that didn't go down well.

Yeah, I was too lazy to synthesize the protein spiking information into a graph. You have to follow the link and hit up chaos and pain for more information on it. His spreadsheet is defunct but you can find the independent assayers he refers to with a little googling.
There was another lab source with some independent researchers finding the highest quality whey protein with respect to no junk amino acids added, they update a running tally on best protein for budget, etc. A quick summary of their findings is that price has absolutely no bearing on quality.
The body fortress protein you can get from walmart is surprisingly a decent product for it being very cheap.
I don't use protein powders personally, no idea why but they make me gassy. If I need a quick fix at work I usually opt for a supreme protein bar or a metRX brownie (unfortunately they "updated" their product with soy isolate, so these are not my first choice). I get my protein now from mostly meat and eggs.
Some day I'll make a giant hatchery to grow mealworms and crickets and grind them into protein powder but that sort of thing will likely never be lucrative, even though the macros would be amazing.
Edit: Here is the reddit ---
http://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments...pplements/
And here is the website of the independent protein assayers
https://labdoor.com/rankings/protein
Second Edit: I see some of you guys like Gaspari protein products. Labdoor ranks all of them pretty low based on "ingredient safety" and "projected efficacy" since they contain artificial sweeteners (Splenda and something called Ace K, whatever that is). My guess is that these guys are prejudiced against artificial sweeteners.

RE: Protein powder is a scam.
I don't understand this protein spiking thing at all. With the Gaspari Myofusion for example, the label clearly says it contains 25g/24.9g of protein per serving. The Chaos and Pain chart shows claimed grams of protein per serving, then the actual weight of a given serving, and then divides those two numbers to determine protein percentage per serving. Right? But, the label clearly states there is other crap in each serving and also clearly states how many grams of protein are in each serving. It would be a completely different story if the jug said 100% protein and then we find out the actual amount of protein is only XX%, but that is not the case here.
Watch this video here (from earlier in this thread) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R20EVSwn88 - he explains that even 100% whey powder is not == 100% protein.
Someone please enlighten me where the scam is.

RE: Protein powder is a scam.
Check out this link ->
http://blog.chaosandpain.com/?p=126
Then download Jamie Lewis's protein spreadsheet off Mega.
I'm not sure how to test directly for protein content, since shitty spiked protein will come up clear on a nitrogen test (complying with the FDA is why they spike it), but his spreadsheet has a list for which protein has greater than 1.5 grams of junk aminos per serving. As you can see, Nitrotech, Pro Complex, Myofusion, and Giant Protein all fail in this respect. The Gaspari protein spiking is notable because he claims it's a high quality product and it's damned expensive.
I guess I'm glad in hindsight that at least somebody read the C&P link.
