I'm basically a lucky m-fer and I'm currently working from home. Once a few logistical things get worked out, I'm planning on moving to greener (or at least different) pastures than DC. It's a solid job, 100k (100k+ w/ some OT) if that bears on the decision at all.

I've narrowed it down between Brickell and South Beach, with my educated guess at pros/cons below:

Brickell:

A more "yuppie" crowd that I would fit into easily.
Quieter living area (if I ever actually want to get work done).
Great weekday action such as HH.
More locals, maybe more down to earth (they hold real jobs).

South Beach:

Literally blocks from one of the best beaches.
Partytown USA, bars/clubs everywhere.
Lots of tourists.

I like bars/lounges more than clubs. Since I'm working from home, I'd like things in walking distance such as a gym and grocery. I'm used to not having a car in DC, and I think I could pull that off in SB (although people say otherwise). My job is relatively stress free and I think I could thrive well in a party environment.

The way I see it, I can't really lose with either

The highrises in Brickell are much nicer (and more expensive), but there isn't nearly as much to do on your downtime as the beach. All the people I know who lived in Brickell generally got bored of it pretty fast.

I guess the tradeoff is whether you'd want to have a nicer apartment and live in a "money" area, versus having lots of stuff to do and being on the ocean. You can generally find more people from other countries on the Beach, so it's less American feeling. I prefer the beach.

I 2nd teh Beach...especially for teh ease of hitting on tourists all year round! You can collect some major flags in Miami beach!

Given my proliferation of "downtime" I figured the beach would be a better bet as well. My job is basically production orientated, so my hours are completely flexible. With that being said, taking a stroll around Brickell during the day would probably be a ghost town (well, people either at work or at lunch) whereas the beach is probably busy all the time due to all of the tourist action.

Would it be possible to become a beach bum in South Beach and not have a car? Maybe a bike?

If I wanted to check out Miami proper, I've always been a fan of cabs in DC. That way I can get shitfaced if I want, not have to worry about parking, etc.

The parking is kind of a pain in the ass, so if you think you can get by without a car, and you don't have to physically go anywhere for work, I'd do it.

There are plenty of cabs all over too, so that shouldn't be an issue.

The Beach...not necessarily South...a bit further north is fine ,as long as you can walk to the ocean.
Mainland...well ,if you're on a 100K a year,think about Coral Gables,seems like you could afford it...quiet but really plush ,and you can get to the Beach easy if you buy a moped ,perfect for those distances you'd rather not cycle....and you can get a nice Latina ass on the back if you get lucky

I would never advise anyone who lives in Miami to not have a car, this isn't NYC.

To the OP, I'd rather live in Brickell, the beach gets old real quick IMO, and you have to remember, you've decided to live here, it's not going to be a permanent vacation.

I would never advise anyone who lives in Miami to not have a car, this isn't NYC.

To the OP, I'd rather live in Brickell, the beach gets old real quick IMO, and you have to remember, you've decided to live here, it's not going to be a permanent vacation.

The key thing for me is that I'm working from home. I don't have to commute AT ALL. As long as there are necessities on South Beach, such as a gym and a grocery store, I think I'd be pretty happy. Brickell is nice, but I do hear it dies on weekends. Either way, cabbing over to Brickell for HH seems feasible.

Thanks for your input though, like I said, if its in Miami proper, its gonna be Brickell.

Brickell is fun as hell on weekends.

I know Mixx is a heavy advocate of the happy hour scene there, which I have never hit up.

I have always hit up the dinner scene (10-12) and after and never been disappointed.

Not having a car sounds great. For whatever reason I've always found not having a car liberating. So much less to worry about. Also it helps you save a lot of money per month. I'm pretty vain, so unless its a nice new lease, I'd probably rather just not have one.

But there is a decent gym/grocery. I have to admit the thought of a south beach gym makes me cringe though...

There are plenty of good gyms in south beach. Crunch, Gold's, Equinox, David Barton. There is also a boxing gym, but there is a very good chance that you might have a gym available where you rent.

As for grocery stores there are plenty. Publixs, Whole Foods, and many little bodegas.

Awesome, I'm already getting excited. I have a friend down there and right now the main decision is a 1bd, 2bd, or 3bd. Dealing with an extra extra roommate can be a pain, but my god, the kinda place we could get!

I'm pretty much accustomed to Whole Foods, so that sounds great too.

Every time I go down to Miami I am absolutely shocked, dumbfounded, at the difference in girls between there and DC.

If so do these Russian women only date within their race / culture ? Are they westernized, stuck up, not nice ?

Any black guys have any experience pulling Miami Russian women who resemble the ones in the pics ??

I prefer Miami over the beach for hanging out. The beach is full of bottle whores. I can't tell you how many times I've seen dudes with a flock of girls around them, then an hour later when their bottle(s) are gone, so are the women and them and their homies are left with their dick in their hands. The beach is one of the better spots for day game for sure though.

Hmm.. I had a very similar predicament in terms of location but in a different city.

I'd suggest the following as this is what I did as well.

Create a personalized New Map - on Google Maps:

I searched for places that I liked to frequent and names of stores, clubs, gyms, book stores & other locations.

Then I also mapped the Apartments I was looking at..

Eventually, I was able to find the perfect spot for ME.. in Houston back then.

PS: It might be nice to get a nice used motorbike for very low price. Keep it indoors and ride when the weather is nice and/ or you want to go a little farther.

Cab it, when you dont want to bother with riding.

North Beach all the way. South Beach isn't really that nice unless you're south of fifth, but then it's mad expensive. Brickel is nice but there really isn't much to do over there. You aren't far from downtown though which has better options than brickel. North Beach is nice and clean and has just as good looking girls as SoBe does (Or any part of MIA), after all, little Brazil and Buenos Aires are both located on North Beach. It's only a 10 minute drive to SoBe, $15 taxi.

I agree that North Beach or Nobe is a good place to live. I moved there in 2005 and really like it. Some negatives is that it can be a bit grimmy and there are limited nightlife choices in the immediate area. One place that is nice is Boteco, a Brazilian bar which has a Tuesday ladies night.

I've pulled 3 out of 4 times from Blue martini in Brickell for what it's worth. That intersection has a couple other nice spots where the girls are pretty, classy, all different races, and if you have decent game you can pull fairly easily.

Also, going out in South Beach can be kind of a shit show unless you have an 'in' at the high end clubs (gansevort, nikki, etc). Why don't you get a cheap hotel in South beach and see if you can stand it for a week.

For me, traditional vacation/tourist areas - vegas, south beach, manhattan - get really old after a week.

If you do live on the mainland, you're cab rides to south beach will be kind of a pain in the ass over the bridge.

I'm not an expert on MIA just been there 4 times for business (which included going out at night) so I thought I'd throw my .02

Edit: You WILL see some of the baddest chicks in South Beach - Latinas with the craziest bodies all over the place.

I agree you should have a car down there. There's all sorts of things to do down in South Florida that will require it, unless you want to routinely have $100 taxi bills.
