Hiring VA's and other freelance elance workers
Hey all,

I'm thinking of hiring Filipinos to write content for a project about various fields.

I want cheap work but I don't want total crap. I was wondering if you've had experience hiring people (i know there is a thread dedicated to being a freelance worker online but not a thread for potential employers, as I understand it)

Should I look for cheap and good reviews, or pay high?

Can I use their work for whatever I please, or do they retain any rights over their material? I'm not sure exactly what they're going to come up with since opinions in the topics I am interested in are pretty varied.

I'm looking for writers who can produce articles and blog style posts about the following subjects:

TESOL, Politics, Travel, Chess, Poker, and a few others for the rest.

Would I be better looking for guest bloggers, who can promote themselves by writing for free, or go a mixed route?

Thanks bros

I would stay far away from non-native english speakers if you want a real website or real business. Think about it, what can a low paid filipino contribute the subjects they know nothing about? Cheap isn't what you're paying alone, but what you're making from it.

Two methods for finding quality content on the somewhat cheap:

1) Find an expert in their field who recently moved into freelancing. You can do this on Elance. Experts enjoy writing about their favorite subject and will therefore accept lower pay - when they are starting out. It's a gamble and you'll lose them if they become good writers.

2) Use a content producing company. Take advantage of economics of scale, by ordering from a content company who can earn on quantity and therefore not charge as much. Their writers will accept lower pay, because they have steady work. To find these companies it is best to get a recommendation from someone. I can send you one that gets good reviews, $3/100 normal articles and $5/100 for stuff that requires research or creativity - used for content marketing.

Just a side thought, I don't think it is a horrible idea to have cheap writers - even non english if you want to read and clean it up a bit.

I think sometimes, the effort is in the research and if they can do the research for you - it will save a ton of time.

Just a thought.

This is the company I've had recommended by people I absolutely respect and know are the real deal: http://www.clarioninbound.com/.

I don't have any other links but there are many, but then you'd have to test yourself.

that's similar to what what I was thinking too. If they get the main ideas down on paper, even in horrible English, but they've researched a lot about it, then I could clean it up into something readable in a 10th of the time it would take to do all of the research.

Filipinos are generally really good workers. They work long hours and for cheap. Some of my Filipinos log 70-80 hours a week. I'd avoid using Indian workers though. It's always a gamble when you hire an outsource worker. Some are good, most are bad. It's a good idea to hire 2-3 workers for a "trial" period (pay them during the trial), and at the end keep the one who does the best and fire the others.
