Can anyone recommend me classical music?

That is a movie soundtrack but I really like it a lot, any classical music out there like this one? I have tried finding classical music on Pandora but its hard to know what artists to look for, some of the stuff they play is just not appealing to me, I like moody, ambient music like this, not a fan of real old classical music.

Like you realized, this isn't really classical music. It's contemporary film score.

There's a small possibility you'll like some of Wagner's stuff. He invented (or at least popularized) the leitmotif, which is what most film scores even today are build around, but of course his style is much more old-school romantic classical.

For more contemporary classical composers who are atmospheric you might check out Vaughan Williams, Arvo Pärt, or John Adams.

So you mean orchestral/instrumental music, not necessarily classical. The classical period is a semi-specific range of years and most of what is considered "classical" music by normal people isn't actually from that period. /musicnerd

Jeez man, that's a huge field to choose from. Check out movie soundtracks by Hans Zimmer and Howard Shore for starters.

What exactly do you mean by "moody"? I mean, all music has a mood of one kind or other.

Do you like any of these?

I like Ara Malikian a lot. He is a violinist of Lebanese origin, a true musical prodigy, was trained in Germany, now lives in Spain and has played with major orchestras all over the world.
So, he has 100% amazing talent and training, but he is special and creative and does his own arrangements as well as covers of modern pieces and a wide mixture of world music. He has a muse or made a deal with the devil. I have never seen anyone like him. The guy has been on his own performing for years now. He is like Jim Morrison with a violin. I saw him in concert a few weeks ago, and the guy was literally possessed.

I am on the same boat. I really enjoy listening to movie scores. Currently the Hans zimmer soundtrack from interstellar is my favorite. You should also check out some video game scores. They have come a long way since the 8 bit mario theme. Frankly the soundtrack to almost all the Halo games has been phenomenal. I'm pretty sure it's written by Martin O'donnel.

As others have said, contemporary film music isn't the same as classical music.

However, you may enjoy certain modern composers who write in the same style that some film writers do. Modern classical music brought about a lot of atonal stuff that deviates significantly from the styles of the big name composers like Mozart, Beethoven, etc.

Personally as a classically trained musician, I don't enjoy this modern classical music and think it should be relegated to the background of movies or the trash bin of history. Certain film composers like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Jon Goldsmith are all solid.

You on the other hand may come to enjoy some of it and I implore you to find stuff that you like.

Howard Hanson's Romantic Symphony:

Schoenberg String Quratets

Try plugging these composers names into Pandora. Pandora normally does a really good job of matching up things you may potentially like. Don't hesitate to thumbs it down though if you don't like it!

If we draw on the music composed since, oh, the invention of the piano in 1700 I'm sure we can find something you like.

Keep in mind that different performances or interpretations of a piece can sound very different, so if you don't like on version of a piece you might really like another performance of it. Also, don't write off a composer just because you didn't like the first of their pieces you heard. Many composers wrote an extremely varied body of music.

Shameless self promotion time!

I restore old classical recordings from the original discs as a hobby. It's my firm belief that the early 1930s holds the best recorded classical music.

This is one of my favourites so far Mozart's Jupiter Symphony recorded pre-war by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic.

OP, if you're into film soundtracks, with a classical feel, one of the [video=youtube]best of the last ten years has to be the 'Inception' soundtrack.
I know some people hate on Hans Zimmer, that he's too 'mainstream' or whatever, but if it's good it's good, I don't give a fiddlers if it's some niche avant garde work that only ten people have ever heard or a very mainstream guy like Zimmer.
Fact remains some of the pieces on this soundtrack are astounding, really powerful, see what you think anyway, I'm pretty sure you'll like it:

My Dad always had classical or opera playing in the house. Among the music that marked me the most was Holst's "The Planets" suite. I played it so often I'm surprised I didn't wear through the grooves in the vinyl to one day just lift a slender thread of vinyl off the turntable... Anyhoo, every piece is distinct, filled with drama and wonder, just an all-round fantastic suite (my $0.02).

Another favourite:

The following isn't classical music, but rather an orchestral score from the Giant Robo: The Earth Stood Still animated mini-series from a few years back. The links are to the first tracks of both the first and second album in the respective playlists. I enjoy it and I'm sure there are others here who will too.
