You don’t say. This summer, the video for “Anaconda,” Nicki Minaj’s ode to the posterior, garnered 19.6 million views in the first 24 hours of its release. Two other videos prominently featured the behind: Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” in which she sang of “that boom-boom that all the boys chase.”This year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue featured the models Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen all posing with their bottoms to the camera.

Women can choose from one of several lines of jeans that promise to lift their buttocks (including the YMI Wanna Betta Butt, which now has a huge billboard gracing 49th and Broadway).

For anyone obsessive enough to worry about the size of the pores on her rear end, there is a $65 facial at Skin by Molly in Williamsburg, which promises to “smooth out rough skin with steam and extractions. It’s just like a facial ... except for your bum.”

And as any SoulCycle devotee will report, there is a large and varied repertory of songs in praise of the posterior, including Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and Major Lazer’s “Bubble Butt.”

The rear is fast becoming the erogenous zone of choice in America, vying for eminence with breasts, abs, legs or, for those of us who came of age in the early ’90s, Linda Hamilton’s sinewy arms in “Terminator 2.” Captivating back-end views of amply endowed personalities have stirred the popular imagination, prompting many women, it would seem, to chase after gawk-worthy curves of their own.

Not that this is exactly new. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jessica Biel, Rihanna, Serena Williams, Pippa Middleton and Beyoncé (who, on her tour that just ended, wore a bodysuit with the tush cutout) have all been praised for their behinds. But perhaps no one has been more celebrated than Jennifer Lopez, whose buttocks were called “in and of themselves, a cultural icon” in Vanity Fair.

Tina Fey cited Ms. Lopez’s influence in “Bossypants.” “The first real change in women’s body image came when JLo turned it butt-style,” she wrote. “That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American Beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them.”

Rob Zangardi, a fashion stylist who has worked with Ms. Lopez, noted that her breakout role in “Selena” in 1997 “came at a time when the media, fashion and Hollywood were obsessed with a more slender frame.”

“Jen stood out because she was different and embraced it,” he said.

But fashion, too, has taken a turn, with nipped-in waists and form-fitting dresses putting new emphasis on curves and less on more androgynous looks. Mariel Haenn, another stylist, points to the visibility of Ms. Kardashian, even on the cover of Vogue. “Someone with a voluptuous body wearing Givenchy like it was made for her shows that high fashion isn’t limited to one body type, and designers are taking note.”

Dr. Shirley Madhère, a plastic surgeon who practices in SoHo, can attest to an increased attention on the backside. “Across the board,” Dr. Madhère said, “regardless of age group and ethnicity, it’s that hourglass shape.” The difference is in the kind of hourglass her patients are looking for. Caucasian and Asians are seeking “a leaner, more athletic build,” she said, “while Latino and African-American patients want a little bit more projection — not too lean.” One way she achieves the illusion of an accentuated behind without a buttock implant is to perform liposuction on the surrounding area.

“You want it like you had when you were 16,” said Anna Kaiser, owner of the AKT in Motion fitness studio on the Upper East Side. Over the last five years, Ms. Kaiser said, her clientele has begun to focus on the gluteal muscles, and her lower-body videos are the ones most frequently purchased. The bottom “more than anything is something you can change with exercise,” she said. To combat the dread flatness, she recommends everything from leg lifts while on all fours to simply “squeezing your booty at the bus stop.”

Erika Nicole Kendall, a writer and personal trainer, spends a lot of time explaining to women how to raise their rear. “I’ll say: ‘It will literally take you eight to 24 months. Are you ready?’ When I ask them what kind of imagery they have in mind, it’s usually somebody who has a large behind and small legs.”

The problem is that “there is an almost cartoonish expectation of having this tiny waist and oversized behind,” said Ms. Kendall, who wrote an article in Ebony last year about the dangers of trying to achieve the perfect behind. “Not only does it fail to make sense anatomically, but there are dangerous and deadly things people are doing to themselves,” she said, referring to injections and implants.

Myra Mendible, a professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, has written extensively about the cultural significance of the female buttocks. Historically, she said, “a woman’s failure to rein in an unruly butt connoted her lack of self-control, and by association, her inferior moral character. It also marked her place in the social order: ‘high class’ women did not carry excess baggage in the trunk.” But now the voluptuous backside is, she said, “a sign of authenticity.” And one that can help sell a range of products, she added, noting Dove and Nike marketing campaigns.

Look no further than the Instagram star Ms. Selter, who is hoping to parlay her famous bottom into workout plans and fitness videos. Cleavage, Ms. Selter maintains, can be transformed only through surgery. A full, pert behind, she said, “shows hard work.”

People can fuss and fight over asses and titties all they want. Nothing and I mean nothing beats a fresh faced, non-fat, 7-10 girl that is 18-24 years old. All this artificial ass junk is like what Kosko said earlier this week about all this corn, hormone laden milk, and processed food junk girls eat these days creating this stuff. It might drive your lust factor up, it gets rises out of me sometimes even, but nothing beats a face on top of peak fertility. I can see the benefit in having a nice ass but I definitely don't want someone who looks like they swallowed two basketballs and hasn't been able to pass them. There's a definite balance here but a nice toned ass can certainly be a turn-on for me.

As a man who loves thick white girls, Iggy is the great white hope for getting white girls to idolize and emulate big asses. White girls are the dominant and most desired ethnicity of women in America, so they will never emulate a non-white en masse - J Lo having a big ass didn't change their mind. Asses on women are like muscles on men - as long as you're slim and natural, they're impossible to be "too big" - the bigger they are, the hotter they are.

Unlike breasts, women can naturally enhance their asses - you could say the elasticity of supply of great natural asses is far far higher than that for breasts. So unless you outright dislike a nice big ass, everyone stands to benefit.

Of course, the NYTimes means "white America's" preference.

I thought about the ass vs. tits generational divide the other day. I'm coming at this from a perspective of white dude in that disputed territory between Generation X and Y. White dudes 10, 15 years older than me are mostly about the tits. White dudes my age and younger are more and more about the booty. This has everything to do with what we were exposed to at a young age: think 7, 8, and 9 years old.

I'm suburban as all get out. Cable brought what's considered "urban" into my family's 3 bedroom home. My parents were busy so of course I watched MTV, In Living Color, etc. Biker shorts were yoga pants before yoga pants. Ass, ass, ass... I swear to God my first glimpse of primal sexuality was an unnamed (no, not J-Lo, but probably her too..) In Living Color dancer with a "big butt and a smile."

Shit, we could go even further back to watching Thelma Evans in Good Times on re-runs when I was five. Maybe nothing compared to today's mega-booty, but I remember...

That's it. A preference sealed for eternity. It would take a lifetime to undo my love of booty. Tits are cool too. I like them. But the pretty face and the booty is what makes me want to impregnate. Thank you Fox, thank you Viacom...

In any discussion of big asses, you have to define the "terms" well.

When I praise a girl for having a big ass, it's implied that she is not fat, that she is relatively slim.

This shift to ass isn't new, the NYT is pretty late in reporting this. A lot girls who previously would only do cardio and "group fitness" classes started hitting the squat rack around a year ago. Around the same time the most popular hipster bar in my (hipster capital) city started running weekly twerk lessons (on top of their dance classes) that became the talk of the town. People started talking about whether or not Nicki Minaj had butt implants. "Fitness blogger" chicks working hard on their butts and getting huge attention for their butt pics. Instagram hotties with big butts started becoming mini-celebrities. When Fancy topped the charts and a lesbian bitch I know started gushing to me about Iggy's booty, that is when I knew we were about to reach critical mass. And then the Anaconda video came along...

If you're not careful, it's easy to conflate two similar but distinct trends:

1. Asses as a sexual focus.
2. Big juicy phat asses over little ones.

The NYT is definitely conflating the two. And while #1 is already here, we have some ways to go before #2 is dominant. Without #1 in place, #2 will not happen. But plenty of people, especially white girls who think big asses are gross or ghetto, are stuck on #1 and not yet at #2.

Also, I definitely see a generational trend of older women, 35+ conceiving of their tits as the erogenous zone of choice while it's the ass for younger girls.

I would disagree with you - phat asses have entered the mainstream white consciousness, but they have yet to attain respectability, let alone high status. You can bet that otherwise hot white girls will snark on white girls with phat asses.

We need a bunch of high profile white celebrities and athletes that choose white, big booty girlfriends and wives. I can't help but notice that white cats usually never look at girls asses as much as Hispanic and Black guys. I don't think i've ever recall seeing a white guy look back at a passing girl with an ass, but i've seen it a lot with Hispanics and Blacks.

Could it be the culture? Has anybody else notice this or is it just me?
