I was recently re-watching Ken Burn's Prohibition documebtary and towards the beginning, it documents the role women played in promoting prohibition.

It talks of "the women's crusade" in which crowds of women would swarm outside of bars and drop to their knees praying to block the entrance.

Huge crows of women would pressure pharmacists to not subscribe alcohol and to sign a pledge affirming as much. It links early Suffragists with the prohibition movement closely, stating that women's effortd in favor of prohibition in many ways helped make women concious of their power to affect political change and gave them animus to fight for suffrage later on.

One woman involved in the movement is quoted dropping serious "temperance game":

"It is easy enough to conquer a man, if you only know how. You should see me talking to some of these saloon men whom I would have never spoken with before. I employ my sweetest accebts. I deploy all the arguments I am posessed of. I look in their eyes, and grow pathetic. I shed tears, and I joke with them. And in the end, they surrender."

Parallels with modern day female political action jump out at you.

Of course, we know the temperance movement led to one of the most violebt eras of organized crime in American history. Lovely job these ladies did.

I think whats more fucked up was the income tax that came as a result of prohibition. Liquor tax was 38% of US tax revenue at the time and that was only at the Federal level, each state charged additional taxes. The deal that was made with woman rights chicks was support the income tax and we will support prohibition. So they pushed just as hard for income tax as they did for prohibition. The concept of income tax meant nothing to them cause they did not work, Woman love spending men money directly or indirectly.

Couple years later prohibition ends but the income tax is still here, and Men still pay a higher amount then woman do.

At least they recognized at the time that it was ultra vires for the federal government to prohibit alcohol, and they passed an amendment for it.
Now they just prohibit anything they want, and the courts subsitutes legal bullshitting in place of an actual amendment.

There are some great simliarities between Feminism and the Women's Temperance Movement.

Ugly broads ganging up and bitching up a storm. Ruining the fun for men of all generations.

Victorian England-pre-WWII is a good timeline to show.

Damn. Looking at those fine ladies in the photos. I'd be drinking out of my skull too if i had to come home to anyone of those bridge trolls every evening.

In hindsight, we also learn how black markets come about when you remove symptoms but not cause.

Those suffragists are trolls. I'm surprised no one back then called them out on being ugly and envious of women who were employed.

Look at the fruit of suffragists and see what came of them. It's disgusting to see how far they came.

People used to drink a lot more back at the turn of the 20th century. In the morning, at work. Beer in the taverns at lunch. Everyone had hip flasks.

Plus they were selling laudanum (booze with opium) and Coca Cola with cocaine over the counter.

It's hard to tell what things were really like then with all of that inebriation. Must have been interesting: maybe fun, maybe not.

SP5, the "Prohibition" documentary claims that the average person drank about 3 times as much in the mid 1800s as is the case now.

It's funny, I think everyone probably has "alcoholic" grandparents. I guess to them they were totally normal and their grandchildren just couldn't hold their liquor.

One of the reasons they pushed for temperance was mass domestic abuse at the hands of drunk husbands. Also the real alcoholics would spend the family money as soon as they got paid.

Have women become more attractive since then ? The best looking girl in that pic would have been a 2 on the now defunct 10 scale
