Staying Cut & Making Gains While Drinking Alcohol?
For you guys that workout and are cut but also drink socially, do you have any tips on the kind of drinks that are more bodybuilder friendly when hanging out at a bar? I've heard clearer liquor like vodka is better than rum, for instance. Or do guys order wine, sugarless Redbull or whatever you want. What do you guys do?

drink what ever you want, just don't eat after. alcohol shuts down your bodys ability to burn fat. for myself i usually drink guiness or straight alcohol like vodka or scotch on ice

Vodka club with lemon and lime. Tastes kinda like sprite (zero).

Pretty sure anything that's low carb and is absolutely not beer would be bodybuilder friendly.

This. I'd avoid wine as well. Spirits, neat are the way to go. Or you can have diet mixers as long as you tuck and do the pee pee dance first. In my personal, anecdotal experience, I have never had a problem with staying lean and drinking a skinful of spirits, nor has anyone else I know. There are some theories about how calories in alcohol aren't like other calories, in that they don't have the same effect on the body as calories from food. I don't get too involved in the science side of things, so I can't do much more than give you an idea to search for it and see what you think.

Vodka/soda

Vodka/crystal lite

Vodka rocks

Tequila shots

Avoid any sugary alcohols or mixers and beer

I have always drank while on a diet and always lost weight just fine.

And yes, definitely avoid those late night meals. Eat before you go out and then just drink.

Also the guys saying don't eat are misguided. Get your 1 gram per pound of bodyweight (or more) of protein even if you are drinking or are currently drunk.

I have yet to meet an actually big and muscular guy who does anything resembling fasting. Slay two or three shakes and commence drinking.

Yeah should have been more specific. Eat all your daily calories beforehand. Just no eating after you start drinking ie. late night pizza after the bar.

Also you can use alcohol as part of looking cut for a specific day if you for example want to look really dry and lean for a day at the beach or a photoshoot, etc. Getting shit faced the day before will make your body dehydrated the next day making you extra lean. This obviously only applies to if you're already pretty lean to begin with.

I drink wine and straight whiskey, and stop at 2 glasses. Sometimes I'd have a beer or two. Keep it moderate and don't get shitfaced, you'll be fine. Drunk people tend to eat lots of bad foods like pizzas and kebabs which do the real damages...

RE: Staying Cut & Making Gains While Drinking Alcohol?
Alcohol takes metabolic priority in your body.

Anything you eat while your body is metabolizing it will take a backseat to the alcohol and its digestion. Which means it will most likely be stored as fat, especially true for carbs.

Also, have more than a couple drinks within 8 hours of your training and you are seriously inhibiting your protein synthesis spike since your last workout.

Dont eat before or after drinking. That said, don't drink on an empty stomach either. If you're looking to make gains while drinking alcohol, keep it to 1-2x a week at most, and never more than a couple drinks. This is the ideal scenario at least.

What I've mentioned above is 0% from my experiences. It is however 100% from advanced nutrition university courses, in simplest terms.

If you want to stay lean after a night out of drinking, skip breakfast the next day to make up for the additional empty calories you consumed the previous night.

That's all there is to it.

RE: Staying Cut & Making Gains While Drinking Alcohol?
Avoiding drunk eating is key. The timing of the food, the type of food, and the amount of food you eat at 4am while drunk are all usually terrible - its what really messes peoples bodyfat level up. Once you get into the habit of not drunk eating though its a fairly easy one to keep, I think. You'll learn to disassociate being drunk with being hungry - the booze will make you feel full. The trick is just getting through the first few nights.

I'm also a big fan of vodka & soda water for the actual drinking. You'll feel far less bloated than you would if you have 8-10 beers, your hangover will be far less severe, and you'll be taking onboard far less calories.

Limiting yourself to one night a week of drinking will help massively too, if you can do it.

Take steroids. In all seriousness, I notice such a landslide in performance in the gym for 3-4 days after the fact that its made me make the choice of whats more important. As said above, have 1-2 drinks, then shut it down, go out and have a good night.

The irony I see is that I would rather do hard drugs than drink now due to weighing the effects.

Does anyone have any experience with carb backloading and drinking? I guess you would only eat carbs and drink on a night if you worked out that day.

I remember watching a youtube video where the carb backloading guru guy (can't remember his name) recommended tequila.

I drink once every week or sometimes two on nights out. 1-3 shots (can't hold my liquor drinking this infrequently.)

If I go out the day I lift, have 2 shots of vodka, does this cancel my workout? I would naturally switch to sodas if so, the workout is better for my mindset than the drinks (and I don't have a rigid schedule of working or going out drinking so if I lift friday I could go out do a couple shots Saturday etc.)

No it does not cancel it. Better than not working out.

It's two shots. If you can't enjoy two ounces of hard liqour... I DK what to tell you.

With all due respect this is Broscience. Alcohol causes the body to retain water in the tissues. TLDR version: Body stops producing anti diuretic hormone (ADH), which causes sodium to be retained, which causes edema and bloating. You feel dehydrated because that water is locked up by sodium and unusable. I have noticed 5 pound gains over a weekend of drinking that is purely water and gone by Tuesday.

Thats why you can identify some alcoholics by seeing how bloated their faces are.

Maybe not entirely, but it does have a cancelling effect.

I remember reading a study while I was in uni that showed how alcohol at night limits the hypertrophy effect of working out earlier in the day. It's a significant effect after the two-drink mark.

Edit: just noticed I mentioned that earlier a few posts up. But yes, there is a "cancelling" effect.

You shouldn't be drinking if you are serious about working out.

If you are going to take roids, then drinking is out of the question. You will get fat and it will ruin your gains.

My mate use to drink hard when on the roids, now he has high blood pressure and had to quit taking roids forever.

RE: Staying Cut & Making Gains While Drinking Alcohol?
I drink about 4 glasses of red wine a week, always with food and never more than one glass per day. I'm satisfied with the muscle gains that I have made by working out. If I were interested in getting really big, then I would probably cut back but it's a quality of life issue for me. I enjoy drinking red wine with my meals and am not prepared to give it up. I already live more health-consciously than 90% of people, as I'm sure most of you guys on here do.

Each man must decide what his priorities are.

Cheers!
