Point of view footage shows moment armed guards see off Somali pirates trying to hijack tanker:

Did you see the razorwire along the sides of the ship? The could have some shoulder fired rockets on board too. Wonder why these shipping companies dont pull out the stops when for security? Up until the hostage situations the engagement probably wasn't worth the risk.

I'm all for shooting the fuck out of these rats but the sheer audacity of them to roll up in their shitty little boat vs that big fucking ship with lots of people onboard is just typical of the attitude these morons have.

I hope they felt pain and died a slow death for their troubles. The mothership should be hunted down and blown up with some .50 or surface to surface missiles.

Notice that the private security were only using iron sights, no ACOG or EOTEC, just straight irons shooting 100 plus yards- hardcore way to go, I just have irons in case my EOTECH batteries die but I never use them, I am going to practice with straight irons for awhile.

It only takes about ten minutes from when the speedboat is visible to when they are up the side of the ship. Most of the time the pirates (shit heads with AKs and maybe an RPG or two in a beat up speed boat) run across unarmed cargo ships and it's easy picking, but it's not so easy to tell whether or not the ship is armed until way too late, as in this instance.

They're on a moving platform making actual aiming even more difficult. But as they're in broad daylight, they can walk the rounds in based on splashes in the water. With a stack of 30 round magazines it's not a bad technique.

Very easy arm chair quarterback this, so to be very clear, first and foremost they did a good job scaring those guys off. I liked the sandbag defenses set up and they appeared to know their positions well.

I saw a few areas of improvement however. The sights I'm a bit torn on, since how can you not have respect for men using iron sights? That said, in my opinion the M4 is not the best weapon to be used, or at least not exclusively used, by the security team. You clearly saw in the video how quickly the dingy approaches the ship. You need a rifle that can punch out longer and hit them, even on the dingy's egress, or to hit other dingies that are approaching from the distance once the fun starts. A short barrel M4 is not so good for that.

Also, they didn't have very well delineated fields of fire, that one guy shoots and aims his rifle perilously close to another guard along the side of the ship. If they are at sea for days and days on end the safe fields of fire should be well known and rehearsed more or less daily.

This is all armchair quarterbacking, but it did lead me to believe they aren't a top notch guard force. Presumably they have big limitations as to the weapons they can bring on board, and again they were effective enough, so good for them. I'm surprised there isn't some international statute that doesn't allow at least light machine guns on board.

Part of me wouldn't mind doing a job like that if it paid well enough.

Back in the Age of Sail, what stopped piracy on the open seas was actually privateers (mainly British) hunting down the pirates killing/capturing them, and hanging them publicly at British ports on display as a warning to others not to conduct in piracy.

HMS Patrol ships in various shipping lanes/routes stopped it all pretty much.

A lack of armed security back then allowed piracy to flourish, and that is no different today. There was way too much of a trust system in International Waters, by civilized and advanced countries to think they could just conduct business unmolested and the Somali pirates just exploited that.

Wanton destruction of ports is just barbaric and creates more terrorists than it would deter piracy.

I think the goal of this wasn't to kill any pirates, but instead scare them off. The weapons seem sort of pointless given the distances and stopping power. These pirates would probably have some sort of russian made rifle with 7.62 in it right?

I'd be curious to see if these pirates would attempt to take a vessel like this more covertly or cleverly and off the security force. I doubt they're smart at all to think like this.

The captain himself mentioned, "warning shots" . God forbid you accidentally "kill" a bloody pirate.

For the record, RPGs or missiles are going to be useless against such a small, moving target with little heat emissions. MGs and Assault rifles from a fortified elevated position is more than enough.

The problem with .50 cal is being able to quickly mount an M2 to face the approach vector. Cargo ships are big and theres no guarantee that any particular emplacement would have an effective field of fire on the approaching boats.

Still, if you had one in place you could walk the shots in like SlickyBoy said, and the rounds are big enough to tear through light vehicles (like the attacking boats).
