Corniness is cool
Why do so many people have a problem with corniness? My theory is that humans are naturally corny, and people are afraid to be natural, so when they see someone being corny, it makes them uncomfortable. In fact I don't know if the concept of corniness even exists outside of the west.

Take a look at these three scenes :

(At 0:58 what he does is very lame, but he still pulls it off and the audience loves it)

(1:33 onwards isn't technically part of the dance)

(Check out 2:00 and 3:08. He does some pretty silly moves, but it's great) - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4nm7tb

Corny, right? But the reason why it's still cool is because the people in those scenes are acting like what they're doing is the coolest thing in the world. It's a similar thing with a lot of 80s music, which is sometimes considered lame.

People these days try so hard to be cool that they end up being very unnatural and obnoxious. For example on the X Factor the good contestants are mostly pretty good and sincere, but as the contest progresses all of their heart and soul gets replaced with fakeness and trying too hard until they eventually end up with an act consisting of lots of gimmicks and pretentious dancers in the background.

When people are joyous and sincere, what comes out is sometimes what we call corniness. People are now so concerned with impressing everyone with how cool they are that they've forgotten to be happy.

That's not how we do things in Russia, comrade.

RE: Corniness is cool
Thats a fine line.

You can be intentionally corny and it's funny. A suave dude owning the dance floor with impressive moves (like Travolta displays) is not corny at all, even if someone thinks one of his dance moves is not killer. Also Prince being a famous musician and a known ladies man and eccentric doing a couple weird things on stage is also completely passable, but... is this cool?

Corny can be "cool" if you are already a cool guy and doing it intentionally to get a rise or make a spectacle out of it. Other than that, it just exacerbates one's awkwardness.

The guy in that video, not quite my cup of tea personally but I do appreciate his sincerity. He's doing those silly moves like he means it, and that's how he's chosen to interpret the music, and to me that's quite cool. I can respect it.

But I don't think you have to be established to be able to pull off silly moves. I think as long as you're sincere and joyous, it can be done. It's not even so much about pulling it off, I think it's more about being genuine. It's like, in different languages, certain words sound weird and silly, but they're perfectly normal in that language, because they mean what they mean, and people who speak that language don't think about the sound of it. Yes it is a fine line.

That's not how we do things in Russia, comrade.

Were the Bee Gees "corny" when they came out, or did they only become corny later?

Got neck and shoulder pain from bad posture? Why not try these stretches?

Things go from "fresh" and "cool" to "corny" or "cheesy" in a matter of trends.

RE: Corniness is cool
It's cool if you've got the demeanour and ZFG to just go for it and pull it off. I'd always get a bit of Dutch courage and get out on the dance floor and do my thing, and it would often work. To me I was doing whatever, but I think just having the confidence to put yourself out there together and pulling it off fairly well actually does work with some women. The last time I did it I was at a staff party with my wife and a 7/10 still came over to me on the dance floor and asked if she could kiss me. It's peacocking, just watch Travolta's body language.

It's about having balls and rhythm, just do it, fuck the haters.

Cool and corny are functions of time. Trends usually skip a decade or two before they're cool again.

The 80's and 90's are in right now.

Drive, from 2011, has heavy doses of 80's influence on the soundtrack and look - and it's damn cool.

Girls are back to wearing 80's neon colors and 90's chokers:

Still too early for early 00's era stuff, though.

If by "killing it", you mean "drinking cock". Then yes, Travolta was "killing it" in the 70's.
