I read about that yesterday. It's crazy how the two brothers alone pledged 60 mil out of that 100 when there were over 250 donors in attendance. It's also crazy how much money these guys are pouring into the political system just to defeat Obama.

This might be the most expensive election battle in history. Romney is worth 250 mil. He's already poured in millions of his own dollars into his election campaign. Then you've got rogue operatives like Karl Rove who's got mad PACs that are raising millions upon millions of dollars.

Even Sheldon Adelson (casino magnate) who is currently backing Gingrich has hinted he will back Romney once he wraps up the nomination.

There's going to be a lot of money changing hands for this one.

Unreal. That decision by the supreme court allowing unlimited corporate donations really undermines the whole political process.

Completely agree.

Pretty much gives the corporations and the politicians free license to ensure the corporatarchy reigns supreme.

Surprised that the politicians haven't all admitted en masse that they don't give a shit about the average American, and never did in the first place.

You would think that politicians would like to do away with the corporate influence merely out of self interest so that they wouldn't have to beg and plead for contributions. On the other hand, they may be doing it so that when they get out of the House or Senate they can get a fat job with one of their former contributors. Look at former Democratic CT Senator Chris Dodd (now head of MPAA). It's not a Repub/Dem issue. We have become a caricature of our own making. It is absurd to think that corporations are people or citizens within the meaning of those terms in the Constitution. It all started here: Santa Clara County v. I guess this is what "freedom of speech" means in America in 2012. God that Citizens United decision was fucked up. I don't think I've ever seen a more perverse application of a more noble concept.

Stevens's dissent in that case is great, by the way. Here's his money quote:
