How do I stop snoring?
I am a loud snorer and a few lizards that I crash with in a nocturnal and horizontal fashion have mentioned that I sound like a saw mill once slumber strikes.

Do you guys know of any methods to address this? Sleeping on my side hardly helps. I tried the neti pot and some nasal flushes.

I know the States has a few things that can help with that. I had one lizard actually take her pillow into the living room once I hit it and passed out.

Thanks.

You may subconsciously want to sleep alone, so as to enjoy the privacy?

If not, they make some kind of spray you squirt into your throat that we used to keep on ships in the Navy for the loud snorers. Those breathing strips over the nose didn't ever seem to help.

Guys that had it bad got some type of sling that went around they heads that cleared it right up. That thing was big, and I bet uncomfortable.

I personally don't snore, so these are just things I've seen people use.

Aloha!

If it's due to your tongue falling back into your throat, then sleeping on your stomach may help. You basically want your tongue to fall into your cheek and not backwards into your throat.

If it's due to a inner throat fat causing your airway to collapse as the pharyngeal muscles relax during sleep, you will need to reduce your overall body fat percentage. Unfortunately, unlike belly fat, you can't really see the fat bulges in your throat so it's hard to assess when you are losing the fat, but once it's gone your airway will have more space to play with, hence less snoring.

If it's neither, then it's probably obstructive sleep apnoea, collapse of the airways due to pharyngeal muscle relaxation during sleep. No cure for that, unfortunately, but treatment with a oxygen pressure mask (CPAP mask) is recommended to keep your airway open, to avoid the long term effects of intermittent oxygen deprivation (which snoring induces).

You need something that will lubricate and shrink the tissues in your throat. The sound of snoring comes from tissue flapping. You also need to control your diet to eliminate things that cause congestion, like dairy. Do a search for products that will shrink tissues. Also drink more water, and maybe stop drinking caffeinated drinks after a certain hour.

The first thing. The doctor is going to tell you to do is lose some weight. Snoring and Weight loss seem to go hand in hand. If you lose about 40lbs, and still have snoring issues. You may have Sleep Apnea. If you get the mask. You will have to sleep with it for the rest of your life.

RE: How do I stop snoring?
Losing weight and snoring is a bullshit myth. One has nothing to do with the other as even BABIES who weight 20lbs SNORE!! What are they suppose to do? Lose weight?

One of the things I have tried that has calmed my snoring is Breathe Right strips to open my nostrils. I only use it when I have a "lizard" sleeping over. If I'm alone, then obviously, no need.

RE: How do I stop snoring?
This website has some good products:

http://www.britishsnoring.co.uk

I bought a device to put in my nose and keep my airways clear and open.

It works quite well but is annoying on a long term basis.
I've had deviated septum surgery when I was younger but it didn't work ,I'll need to try again.

I don't snore but I end up breathing through my mouth which makes me wake up groggy and with a sore throat, which starts the day off bad..

I don't drink caffeine at all. All I drink is water. I don't take dairy at all. I am not overweight (and have never been). Been snoring all my adult life. My doctor in UK told me to get over it (that's NHS for you).

I think I'll try Mixx's stuff.

Nasal surgery is out of the question.

RE: How do I stop snoring?
I just had nasal surgery done a few months ago. The recovery time is 1 week. Plus it's free if you're in Toronto like me. I couldn't figure out the problem. At first I tried to sleep earlier, then I tried to sleep with a humidifier, then I tried to sleep in a cooler room, then I tried every nose medicine/spray/strip. Snoring always caused me to wake up extremely tired and sleepy. So I went to a nose specialist, at the request of my doctor, and he performed the surgery 3 weeks after I went in (not long wait time but I got lucky). Best decision I ever made.

I snore even when on my side. I start with my back, and then sides. The lizards usually push me onto my side so they can sleep but they say it hardly makes a difference.

It's been happening all my adult life. I tried the Neti pot but I am going to order the Mixx strips and see..unless you have anything scientific along the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide that you think I can try...?

I'd prefer to get surgery soon though,no matter how much I heamorrage!
Not being able to breath naturally through your nose at night is a real pain!

I cannot go through the night sleeping on my stomach, it's uncomfortable. It is also uncomfortable for my erection which I would have to push to the side.

I have a big problem with snoring too, just the other day a girl I had taken home the night before says "you sleep too loud" which made me laugh. Apparently it's horrendous and I should go see about it because it could be sleep apnea or something potentially dangerous.

there are strips you can buy that you put on your nose to stop snoring, it opens up your nasal passages so that you don't breeth through your mouth when you sleep

RE: How do I stop snoring?
I also snore, and I found something called a Mandibular Adjustment Device or a MAD. It's really a fancy term for something that looks like an athletic mouthpiece and you fit it the same way by boiling it. What it does is when you put it in your mouth is move your jaw forward so that your tongue and epiglottis don't obstruct your airway and flap against the back of your throat. Like most guys who've posted on this thread, I tried everything and they didn't work but the MAD does. My girlfriend is back to sleeping in the same bed with me now because of it. There's different models on the market, so just google mandibular adjustment device and you'll see who makes them. It worked for me and it's relatively comfortable once you get used to it.

Breath rite strips worked for peeps I know. Even if you don't snore they're effective in alleviating congestion problems during sleep.

RE: How do I stop snoring?
Well I snore. I tried the nasal strips, and mouth piece. Both didn't work. I believe I have to have surgery. I am about 40lbs overweight.

So Yes I did buy the bs line about losing weight. It works two fold. I need to get into better shape anyway, and hopefully. I would stop snoring.

But the more weight I lose. It doesn't seem to affect the snoring at all. So I will look into surgery. Thank God for health insurance.

RE: How do I stop snoring?
I snore loud as hell.

Women usually mention it at first and I've even had a couple go home in the middle of the night because they couldn't sleep (not that it mattered at that point anyways). It's never been a deal breaker though, at least not that I know of.

Most even start to find it comforting after a while and say they have trouble sleeping without it. I guess they could just be saying that as an excuse to stay over more though.

In any case, probably a good thing to get taken care of just because of the health issues.

I snore a lot harder when either drunk or sleep-deprived.
