I've learned a lot from Day Bang, but the one thing I'm having trouble with is opening in clothing stores. I cannot calibrate "Does this <article of clothing> match my personality?" correctly for it to be a good opener for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions for simple elderly openers in clothing shops?

Just brainstorming, what about:
"Would you think my 5 year old niece would like this <piece of kids clothing>?"

"Is it OK to wear long sleeved shirts during the summer?"

I dunno...these are still awkward for me and don't calibrate with my personality, especially when it's a little strange for me to be wandering in the womens section anyway.

Any suggestions?

You seem to be overthinking this one. How about a simple "Does it look good on me?". If she says yes, then "I'm getting this for such and such...". If she says no, then "I need to pick something for such and such, what would you suggest....".

I agree with haywire that you may be over-thinking here. As long as you don't say anything weird in your opener it won't matter so much/affect the outcome. You could simply say, "what do you think of this?" Then look to see if she gives you indicators of interest (e.g. strong eye contact, smile, tone of voice, etc.). If they are ambiguous maybe ramble for one or two more lines. If she's interested she'll give you something to work with soon and if not move on, she's not interested.

I like to add in an assumption that they have a boyfriend, giving them the chance to say they are single, something like:

"What do you think of this <insert clothing item>...Would you buy this for your boyfriend?"

haywire, my milf hunter homie , had the perfect response. you WILL start tripping over your shoelaces if you're over thinking things like this with girls. keep it simple, natural as possible and let it flow like a river man. you might want to get high before you go out and approach if you're having trouble with this.

I walked past a woman in old navy that was looking through T-shirts. She was ok looking. I just like fucking with people and being funny once in a while.
Anyways ...I walked by her and said kinda loud, "Get the pink one". She just busted out laughing and replied, "I really like the pink one". I probably could closed her but I
wasn't really interested.
