It's a depiction of American wanderers/nomads in the present day. Pretty interesting from a cultural standpoint, and there's some history thrown in there as well. It was very well done (in my opinion). Pretty entertaining too. I will say though parts are pretty grimy.

Life on the road looks like a lonely old life in those vast expanses.
The Dream of it is better than the lonely reality!

For a road trip or a few months it could be interesting and toughen you up .
But for a long term lifestyle No thanks!

Yeah travelling like that is fucking ridiculous. Getting into knife fights with deranged hobos or getting your leg cut off trying to jump on a train. Not for me.

I understand the natural beauty of the american west but if I had to do that kind of thing I'd much rather do it outside the U.S.

Yeah fuck the gutter punk transient lifestyle. That's one group and subculture I have no love for, I know most gutter punks have had rough fucked up lives, but they're the human equivalent to street rats.

There's a bunch of them in the U.S. Northwest, they tend to travel a lot between Seattle and Santa Cruz. Basically, they absolutely don't want to work, spend all day getting belligerently drunk on Steel Reserve, act like confrontational assholes when scrounging for change, etc. Most of them are extremely violent, carry knives, and get into fights, assault each other, and commit petty crimes, as well as theft, robbery, and property damage.

Yeah, it's crazy like that in Portland. Kids will basically ditch out on cushy, suburban lifestyles to live the street life. I don't find them all that dangerous though, just annoying. They've drawn a lot of police attention over the years, so they know their boundaries. I make good with the "cooler" ones that I see regularly, because it always helps to have eyes and ears on the street, or someone on your side in case shit goes down.

Plus, in worst-case scenarios, they're good for a weed hook-up.

You get toughened up from this type of buffoonery but in the end you just end up broke and hoping that pink haired broad you fucked on a flat-bed truck in Eugene, Oregon ain't get you burned.

My homie hitchhiked and planted trees one summer. Most bizarre stories of almost getting mauled by a bear to fuking gutter punk skanks and being adopted by some hillbilly elders and eating deer meat with them for 2 weeks strait lol. Nothing fazes him now and his skin feels like leather.

I don't like healthy people my age who refuse to work and beg for money. A lot of them do this to "look cool" and fit in with other ones.

In the documentary its not just about gutter punks, there is one ex stock broker who made enough money to retire in this mid 30s, retired RVers, rodeo guys and the aforementioned Mountain Man. Its a great film. The book American Nomads by the guy who directed/presented the film is an essential read in my opinion, traces the history of nomadism in the USA alongside profiles of people living the life today. Fascinating stuff.

wow thx for bumping this thread, it's amazing and inspiring...

It kind of reminds me of how I'd be if I truly did fall in love with Germany's underground music scene. From psytrance parties in the forest to hard/grime electro in a warehouse.

This documentary finally made me understand who the "gutter punks" are, I've seen them here in NY and always wondered what the hell their life consist of. I'm an experience junkie and would love to have enough money to simply live different lifestyles every 30 days just for the life experience.

P.S...Slum city looked very interesting!!! Maybe in a past life I was a nomad?
